Strange experience – I made the mistake of spending my Valentine's dinner here. We walked into what appeared to be a run down VFW hall with terribly uninviting furniture and a stale stench of cigarette smoke. I asked my date "are we at the right place?" We went up the elevator and we hear extremely loud wedding music. At this point I am afraid to get off the elevator. We decide it's already late as we had made a reservation for 8 so we stayed. The hostess (who doubled as our waitress) struggled to hear us tell her whose name the reservation was under it was so loud in there. Then they had no reservation for us at all when we had booked a week in advance. Great start to the evening. She then tries to seat us in the corner behind a full table, I do not see how we would fit there and there was nobody there so she could have sat us anywhere else. The DJ continued to pump wedding songs and songs you would hear in nightclubs. I am in my 20's and was annoyed by this. I was expecting nice light dinner music, not spanish techno, or whatever it was.
Onto the food... the rolls were served to us burnt, unbelievable. food was below average. the brocolli was frozen. the rolls were also clearly frozen (before they burned them) I just can't fathom a place that would send out burnt food, even as the server I would be embarrassed to bring that out. I also had people crawling over me to get to the back door to go smoke outside, very inviting. It was freezing in there also.
The overall experience was just very odd and not at all what we were expecting. The website was very misleading as to the atmosphere and class of the restaurant. The meal was something you would get at a bad wedding for the cousin you never liked.
Reservations only – To "piccolinalittleitaly", aka "cc"; from Top of the Crescent, on the RIGHT side of the street. Let us see WHO is the liar. 1)She personally never had any dealings with the owner. 2)She says "a bar-unlimited-had been paid for." UNTRUE. 3)She says stairs & elevator were locked causing a fire hazard. UNTRUE. Commercial stairs have a Panic Bar, no locks, & "NO RE-ENTRY" on the door. The elevator is locked only to the empty lower floors for security reasons, but not to the lobby. 4)We didn't serve the entree until 10:40. She didn't explain that almost 200 people in the dining room had to wait over 2 hrs. until the bridal party decided to be introduced at 8:00. She said the waitress was rude for trying to take entree orders during the best man's toast. We MUST take entree orders when all guests are sitting in their specific seats. A toast takes 1", but in this case the best man & several other people made speeches for 27". Note: They started to eat at 8:00, entree orders couldn't be taken for 27", and still in 2'40" we served sliced tomatoes, fresh mozzarella that we make, & basil grown on our terrace; then 4 platters to share of stuffed mushrooms-spicy chicken-eggplant rollatini-vegetables vinaigrette; then pasta (with a sauce that Tony Bennett loves); then a choice of 5 entrees. All cooked fresh. We are so health conscious we use the United Cookware system to retain vitamins, minerals,& natural flavors. We do NOT use teflon. We do NOT own a micro-wave. Only an experienced crew & a chef who has been with us over 30 yrs. could perform this miracle in so little time. 5)The "unlabeled CDs" were given to us by the groom. When left to think for ourselves, we have 1,000's of CDs. 6)The waiter spinning the CDs (only during their band's breaks) is Russian, does not yet have command of our language & does repeat a question many times because he wants to please. His father is an engineer, his mother is a medical doctor & he is a college student with a 3.7 GPA. 7)Should I go on?
Dont even bother, the owner is a liar – Awful. We had small parties at this restaurant a few years back. When the time came for a family gathering to celebrate a wedding that had taken place abroad- we thought this would be the ideal restaurant. It would have, had the owner not been a liar, the waitstaff rude, and the dj completely stoned outof his mind. Top of the Cresecent has a lounge and libraray, and a rooftoprestaurant with views of the bridge. We- the bridal party- waited in the lounge and library until we were announced. That level had a decent restroom, which was clean. Problem is, after we took the elevators up to the roof for the reception, they LOCKED the lower level; and they locked the elevators and stairs. I dont even need to go into the fire hazard. The ownerl ocked himself on the lower level because he knew there were big problems upstairs. A bar- unlimited- had been paid for. Wine- when it came was WARM. When my date asked for a vodka tonic- the waitress, outright and rudely said "no". That same waitress- during the best man's speech- tried to ake dinner orders. When we asked the lovely young lady to wait- she slapped her pad on her thigh. Then there was the matter of the dinner itself. When guests started leavingat 10:30 and dinner had not yet been served, my mother and i walked into the kitchen and started yelling. They seemed competely clueless and had no idea why we were SO upset. Not to mention, the food was bland, blah and ordinary...Then there was the dj,the most entertaining of our problems- but, nonethless, a part of the scheme pulled off by owner . The DJ was thehead waiter, whose repertiore consisted of unlabled mixed cds that his friends had made - about 12. And, to top it off, the DJ was stoned out of his mind.Any request that you made to him came right back to you in the form of a question, with a dumb, blank or puzzled look on his face. It would have been comical if it were a scene from Dazed and Confused. It was a travesty that this as a wedding reception.
