Terrible service on webstore – I spent more than $100 to send a gift basket to a family member. I made the purchase on a Tuesday and paid for two day delivery to ensure that it would arrive no later than Saturday (it was an Easter gift and needed to be there on time for various reasoss). Six days later (now the following week) and it hasn't yet arrived. I called them to complain, and they offered to knock only $20 (!!!) off the price, even though they admitted to screwing up the order.
They are unable to deliver what they promise and take no responsibility for their errors.
DO NOT USE THEIR ONLINE STORE!
3 month's of cheese but ONLY 2 deliveries in 7 months!?! – I'm the recipient of their 3 Months of Cheese from Spain gift. I never received the first month (My birthday was in March). My friend notified them when more time went by and I had the awkward conversation 2 months after my birthday party where I told my friend how excited I was for the cheese cub gift but it never arrived.
So here's what happened... the cheese arrived after said friend contacted them. Stinky Cheese had it hand delivered to my apartment. Problem 2 (problem 1 was lack of delivery): Stinky Cheese never notified me that it was coming, cheese was delivered to my apartment building but nothing on the bag indicated it was perishable or should be refrigerated. I've never received a gift of food that didn't state this as my doormen put perishables in the fridge if need be. Luckily I was in town that day and the bag of cheese sat out for only a few hours.
The story was EXACTLY the same for the second delivery. My friend asked how I liked the second and third month of cheese, I answered it never arrived, she contacted them, later that day, *presto* cheese arrived. Summers in Manhattan are HOT and I had a bag of cheese sitting in the doorman's un-air-conditioned closet. fantastic.
Now, its almost 7 months since I was notified I was getting this gift of cheese and STILL, the 3rd delivery has never arrived!! my friend has contacted them numerous times that the third installment of the cheese has NEVER arrived. They do not respond. She was nicer than I would have been at this point and simply asked for delivery info. STILL, NO answer!
Such a shame since it was a gift with so much promise.
Amazing Cheese & Specialty Foods – Wow! ham bar???? Tons of cheese and chocolate???? Have I gone to heaven? Great store and excellent service! Everyone there knew a ton and taught me more about cheese than I have ever known. Tons of things you CAN NOT find in big stores. Thats the reason to go here if the service hasnt already convinced you.
rude, rude, rude staff – I love fine foods and wines as much as the next person. The arrival of Smith and Vine to our neighborhood was a wonderful thing. And then they opened Stinky and I thought all was well in the world. When they first opened the staff was fun, young, friendly, and helpful. But now they seem tired, down, unfriendly and rude. The girls who work there cannot be bothered to even look at you when you walk in. I have stood, in an empty shop, for a good five minutes trying to make eye contact with the snobby cheese girl while she pretends to be too busy to look up from her saran wrap. I have spent a lot of money here. The products are obviously great. However, due to the rudeness of the staff and the general feeling of unfriendliness, I don't think I will be returning. It has nothing to do with the prices, it's that arrogant air of superiority and rudeness that will deter me in the future. What a disappointment.
Good selection of cheeses and other gourmet items, but rude staff (or owners)and overpriced – I do believe that the items this shop carries are all top notch quality. However, I believe that the prices frankly take advantage of the clueless nature of the transplants from outside of NYC. Many items can be found for less (and better) elsewhere. For example, lease try the fresh salted mozzarella at Caputo's on Court Street instead!!!!!!! In addition, the staff is rather rude; no eye contact (as their eyes are usually glued to a computer screen; not helpful, and they assume that their customers are not knowledgeable in the least - which at least in my case, is not true. For even better selection ans service try the various food shops in Park Slope.
Of course, though, this is NYC and I'm a New Yorker, so I certainly do not need overly friendly service - but some normal human respect for their customers would be nice especially since they pay top dollar to shop there.
To be fair, though, by contrast, the wine shop, Smith and Vine, carries a tremendous selection AND the staff (at least) is courteous and helpful. Not too much to ask, I think.
Over Rated - Owners are prejudiced – Stinky Brooklyn DOES have a large selection. However, NOT all of the workers know about cheese and MOST of them do NOT know about customer service. The service is generally rude. I shop there often as do members of my family. If you know what you want it's a good place to shop. DON'T expect good service. Sometimes the owners are there - that's when I'll walk out. The 2 owners are very full of themselves and speak DOWN about the people of the neighborhood. I've heard them tell people, "before people like us moved here Carroll Gardens was full of addicts and sp!k*s. If it wasn't for our shop all this area would have is bodagas.'
When I asked what they meant I was told that Smith & Wine was the FIRST fine wine shop in the area for miles. When I reminded them of Vintage Cellars (there for over 10 years) and of Scotto's Wine (there for 25+ years) the owner said, "those aren't real wine shops" I told the owner it wasn't true that each of those shops had a very good selection and I also said that if i were of Mexian or Puerto Rican heritage I would be very upset by the comments I heard them make. The owners turned all shades of red - but from anger not shame!!!
Offering charcuterie, chocolates and a wide variety of cheeses, this gourmet shop stinks--in the best way possible. – In Short
From the owners of neighborhood wine store Smith & Vine comes this cozy cheese and specialty food shop. Customers are greeted by a pungent aroma, helpful salespeople and about 150 types of cheese, grouped by "stink-factor." The shop also offers chutneys, chocolate and cured meats, as well as olive oil from area spots like Frankie's 457, olive bread from Mazzola, confections from One Girl Cookies, and, from Applewood, blue-cheese cheesecakes, morel butter and duck fat.
Best Chees Shop in Brooklyn!!! – I have lived in the neighborhood for many years and have also been around the cheese circuit for a long time. The folks at Stinky have a tremendous backround in cheese/specialty foods and wine. After being in the business for over 12 years, they are the best by far in Brooklyn. Great shop, excellent service, and an amazing collection of over 150 cheeses.
