Best Video Store in BK – I've NEVER done an online review of anything, but I was just looking up the store's phone number and noticed the comments and felt like I had to add my own.

If you're a real movie fan, you can't do much better than this video store.

They have the new releases, but also the most obscure art films, from foreign (and not just Truffaut and Bergman, but Bela Tarr, Kiarastami, etc.) to gay/lesbian to American indie. And a huge supply of tv shows now on dvd.

I am a filmmaker and I live in the neighborhood.

Video Gallery has kept me from becoming a member of Net Flix.

Kathy can talk art films all day and gives great recommendations.

Igor is the action guy - he knows all the cutting edge action films, domestic and foreign, and he's made awesome recommendations for my kids, who are 4 and 7.

Phil is their resident young indie guy and his knowledge of off-the-beaten track stuff is very good.

One of the most appealing things about Video Gallery is that they're nice people. Not snotty and know-it-all like Reel Video on 8th Avenue, where all the clerks seem to be embittered wannabe filmmakers and you feel like every one of your rentals is passing by their holier-than-thou scrutiny.

The people at Video Gallery actually love movies.

Frustrating – They don't have a drop box so if your movie is not back by closing- 10pm, you get charged. Tonight tried to return my movie and they were closed 10 minutes early.

Pretty good selection, not the warmest environment.

Don't judge a video store by it's florescent lights and ugly walls – The sidewalk view through the gigantic window does not quite do this nichey video store justice. As other posters have said, it's cheap and has a great selection. Unlike another poster, I feel they are quite honest and in 4 years of membership I've had no problems at all. I do wish they had a drop box.

watch your receipts – I have had problems with overdue charges at Video Gallery. I pay the overdue charges when I return the movie rentals. I was recently told that I had not paid the last overdue charge. Unfortunately I didn't have a receipt from the payment. The Gallery does not provide receipts when you pay the overdue charge, unless you specifically request one. So beware! Don't get double billed as I have.

Also, a number of times I have been rented a scratched DVD or a stretched tape. They don't seem to monitor the condition of CD's and tapes.

I'd only rent here because it's cheap and convenient.

New to Park Slope and LOVING IT – I USED TO go to Reel Life South, but got acid burns by their glares one too many times. Video Gallery is family-owned (I think) and they're not overly friendly, but they're not film snobs either. The selection is great. The stroller mom's are ample, so beware: they rent with attitude, but it's park slope, what are you going to do?

PERKS: great selection of the forgotten classics of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. they have the important american classics, and it seems they might have every foreign movie released on video or dvd. VG is dirt cheap, well-lit, and the videos are USUALLY where they're supposed to be. OPEN 365 DAYS A YEAR.

Down side: No drop box. Unsupervised children

Suppliment that Netflix account....There's a reason some video stores are still hannging on. – Where else is this godforsaken country can you rent a movie for $2.25....It's still 2006, right? Wow. Not only is it cheap, but it's independent (both in ownership and in film fare). Video stores are a dying breed so it feels right to support one that really cares. They have a wide variety of indies (both american and foreign) and an extensive older foreign selection. They stock a good portion of Criterion dvds, and the staff, for the most part, is very knowledgable and helpful. They also ordered a movie for me that they didn't have in stock. It arrived a week later, and they called me to let me know it was now on the shelves!

The low side: No drop box, small sci/fi section (if you can consider that a low side...I just thought I'd throw it in there), and if you're not really "in touch" with contemporary cinema, then their new release section can often times be OVERWHELMING, filled with obscure idies and docs you've never heard of.

That being said, if you're a, albeit a terrible connotation, "cinephile", or if you're up for taking risks on movies you've never heard of, I reccomend it. Otherwise, go to Hollywood Video and rent Mr. And Mrs. Smith for the umpteenth time.
