my favorite yoga place – This is my favorite place to practice in new york city. The teachers are all really unique in their teaching styles, and I always find myself feeling very comfortable in their hands. The focus is on alignment and sequencing with just the smallest smattering of yogic philosophy, the perfect mix for me. There are lots of classes to choose from, which works great for someone like me who has a varied schedule and never knows when I can get a class into my day.

Not very good at teaching – I took a "beginner" Hatha class that provided almost no guidance. The instructor took an aerobics-class approach, going through the poses rapidly and mechanically, providing little explanation or help. Some of the poses actually hurt my arms and hands, and I am still suffering the effects. I am actually quite athletic, and visit the gym regularly, so I was surprised by the results. The students seemed to be intermediate level or above. I've taken beginning yoga at other places and have had wonderful instructors. (Also note that the entire place -which is in an old building- smells like mildew.)

My favorite place for yoga in Brooklyn!!! – Park Slope Yoga felt warm and inviting from the moment I stepped in the door. The classes approach yoga classically and often have themes, chanting and pranayama (breathing techniques). Teachers are knowledgeable and friendly. The center is also conveniently located next to the food co-op with a second big, sunny studio across the street (Devi).

Park Slope Yoga Center is a great place for practitioners of all levels from beginner to advanced.

great place to sneak in a workout – When I come to Brooklyn on business I like to keep up with my yoga practice. After a little trial and error I found Park Slope Yoga. It’s really good. Nice studio, great classes and great teachers.

Classic & bright – I love this yoga center- a beautiful, unique, loft-like space with some wonderful teachers. In addition to great asana instruction (which is so important), teachers often give classes even more dimension by incorporating chanting and thematic content.

I've been studying yoga for years at dozens of studios in New York and elsewhere. Park Slope Yoga Center and Devi are the sunniest and most organic feeling - skylights and many plants.

Other things about studio:

Waiting area/ other facilities: not super modern, but simple, clean and no frills

Staff: very pleasant

Price: Great for Brooklyn and New York in general

creepy staff – I agree with Lizhy about the 20 minutes of preaching being a waste of time and money, when other centers focus on the practice more than imparting the accumulated wisdom of a person in their 20's. Also I find their card policy a bit dated for 2008. I don't know what job or purpose the very skinny and effeminate man in his 60's watching over everyone served, but something is not right about the way he kept staring at people and grinning, it made me very uncomfortable!!!!

Stop wasting time enlightening students and teach them to practice correctly – Instructors are more interested in passing along "wisdom" than instructing yoga. Some may be different, but those I have had usually start class with 15-30 minutes of chanting and telling us their thoughts. Frankly, I find nothing "enlightening" about a 20-something finding peace by releasing a rodent instead of killing it. This isn't what I pay for.

And, if you need to take a yoga class to strengthen your back, sitting on a wood floor for 30 minutes is very uncomfortable.

I've taken about 10 classes and left maybe 2 feeling as if I've streched and had some sort of exercise. For the most part, instructors take us through the same basic poses again and again, but offer no real direction so we end up doing them wrong over and over. In the last class I took, the instructor pointed out a student who had never taken classes before and told everyone to see that she was doing the pose wrong. When the student asked how to do it correctly, the instructor said, "Just keep practicing and you'll get it right." If it's that easy, why bother coming in at all? Just move around at home until you somehow magically recognize that you're doing it correctly.

I really wish my class card was refundable.

What's with the Staff? – The class was great, but the front desk staff= weird... Took one class and was bothered by how they tried to 'sell me' a package. Weird...

Some of the Best Teachers! – Your yoga experience really depends on the teacher. Some are better than others--depending on your practice as well..I had been there a few times, not loving it, but the atmosphere is so tranquil, it drew me back. I was especially pleased after having my worst yoga ever at Jaya. I LOVED my last 2 teachers here, and was very impressed with their confidence and intelligence. They were very welcoming to beginners, and very supportive at every level. Nikki and Sasha are amazing, and I promise--I don't work for this place! I just LOVE it!! Wish I was there now....ommmmmm

Faaaaabulous Teachers – Laid-back atmosphere of a neighborhood studio (love the skylight and hanging plants) with some top-notch vinyasa teachers. Have never taken a class I didn't love there. I always leave blissed out, happy to have discovered something new, and drenched in sweat. I just wish they had a shower.
