Worth every penny! – The atmosphere is very relaxing and inviting. Coffee is delicious and awesome service from the staff.
Amazing – I went to Sweet Melissa after work the other day and decided to unwind by taking a seat in the back garden. By the time I'm halfway my coffee, I felt the burdens of a hard day being lifted from my shoulders. An amazing retreat. A hidden paradise in Brooklyn.
Overrated – Decided to venture in one evening for a cup of coffee and desert, boy was I disappointed. It was an awful Cappucino and the cake was dry! Thank God for Cafe Pedlar just nearby.
I wish I was there right now – I'm fantasizing about lemon tarts and bread pudding ! Help!!!!!
but seriously this place is amazing -
..the pastries are beyond great and the variety from macaroons to muffins will suit every taste... The menu is also a winner (the welsh rarebit is so perfect!) and the new weekend brunch tops my list ...Try the "Clafouti" for something wonderfully different.
If that wasn't enough - this eatery boasts a cozy dining space - but the real treasure is the back garden - Beautiful!
Enjoy it before summer's end - you will love it!
Melissa needs a reality check. – I joined a friend’s celebration brunch here yesterday.
The food was mediocre at best. I’ve had a better brunch on an airplane (and the portions were actually much better as well). Small h’orderves, scones, tea, lemonade, and a cake turned out to be around $100usd per head. When my friend contested the final price she was screamed at, and chased down the street by the owner.
Overall a really bad experience for about a 1/5th the price of a round-trip to the UK where you could get the real thing.
Not So Sweet Melissa – I just held a Queens Tea at Sweet Melissa's and will never, ever return.
The cost of the tea, which consisted of scones, lemonade, iced tea, and very small portions of disappointing food , (a small cup of soup, lettuce with dressing, a tiny salmon wrap, a microwaved miniature quiche, and chicken salad on a water cracker) plus a few pastries for 13 people was approximately $1,200. Admittedly, this did include a delicious cake, for which I paid $175. My guests left hungry, food untouched, and I overheard someone say that the food must have come from Costco. That said, fine, the food was disappointing, but these things happen.
The reason I will never go back is because, after requesting a final price or contract or amount of deposit to put down, which I never received (being assured by Rory, who is a sweetheart, that I didn't need one) I was charged for 20 guests and not 13. This was something never discussed or agreed to in writing. That said, okay fine. A total rip off. Rip offs happen and thank god I put it on my Amex.
What should never, EVER, EVER happen is the owner, Melissa herself, running after me on Court Street SCREAMING and belittling me when all I did was ask to be charged for 13 people not 20. The woman was out of control (I am shy and quiet by nature and maybe said four or five sentences). I have never in all my life imagined that a small business owner could be such a lunatic, and so unprofessional, that her own staff had to physically restrain her and drag her back inside her restaurant. Unbelievable.
(The cake, however, I have to admit, was very good, which is why I am giving a star).
Good morning noshes – I just grabbed a large decaf latte, two ham and gruyere croissants, a chocolate croissant, and a sour cherry biscotti. The latte was terrific--great flavor (not insipid), very hot (but not scalding). The biscotti was not my favorite; a bit sweet. The chocolate croissant was very good and the ham and cheese croissants were honestly, out of this world! Fresh, crispy layers, buttery goodness. What a great way to start the day. I usually enjoy Sweet Melissa's pastries, but have had some mediocre experiences. And I don't recommend their lunches. But this to-go breakfast was wonderful. I know they've had mixed reviews on the service, but I always have found the counter service to be good, and the girl who served me this morning was cheerful, pleasant, and efficient.
Underwhelming – I live in the area and after reading so many good reviews about this place, I finally went today for brunch. My cafe au lait was lukewarm, my croissant didn't taste very fresh (even though they claim to bake daily) and it took them a long time for my order to arrive. Even worst, my date's order didn't come at the same time and he had to wait some more. The waitstaff was nice, but a little flaky and not very attentive - I had to flag someone down a couple of times before someone saw me. Needless to say, I was completely disappointed and I will not be coming back.
Won't go there again! – Stopped by Sweet Melissa's on Court Street last weekend for an after dinner tea and dessert and was very disappointed. The almond croissant was inedible, dry and very stale. I was willing to overlook that and ask for another dessert, but then my tea arrived and I noticed that the teapot and cup were both dirty with accumulated residue. I then informed the waitress of this and told her I would pay her a tip for her trouble but not for the items given the circumstances. She was so rude and unapologetic that I just left shaking my head at how clueless they have become.
When Sweet Melissa first opened the items were fresh and the place was well-run. It has always been pricey but then you didn't mind because all the pastries and desserts were absolutely delicious and unique to the neighborhood. I hope the owner takes note of how far the service and quality of their merchandise has fallen and that she takes action to reverse it because I can't imagine that customers will continue to frequent it under those circumstances.
Not so hot – Not up to the hype. Not very fresh and the staff is rude. This is true of the Park Slope location as well.
