Stately mansion in overlooked historic Brooklyn neighborhood. – The Scene
Akwaaba is a fantasy come true for its owners, Monique Greenwood (a former publisher who dabbles in decorating), and her poet-engineer husband, Glenn Pogue. The couple found the landmark mansion, neglected despite its historic stature, in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood. They transformed it into an urban oasis, importing African furnishings and naming the place "Akwaaba," which means "welcome" in Ghana.
Guests are made to feel very welcome. The guest rooms have colorful names like Ashante and Jumping the Broom. They are lovely and light, with spare and tasteful furnishings, exotic African accents, polished hardwood floors and wall sconces to impart romance. Updates mean you will now also find Jacuzzis in all accommodations. In the morning, the innkeepers prepare generous, hot, complimentary breakfasts.
