I honestly cannot believe how awful and untrue some of these comments are, from the owners and employees to the way the horses are treated. I've been taking lessons here twice a week for about a month and I have never had anyone be rude or nasty to me. I especially have never ever seen any horse be mistreated. Being that I go there early in the mornings I get to see the horses running around outside, playing. I see all of the staff grooming, talking and even kissing the horses. I have worked with two trainers and they are both great. Everyone there has a great passion for what they do and for the horses they work with. The second time I went riding at JBRA I ended up falling (100% my own fault) and everyone there made sure I was okay. I started taking lessons because I wanted to get over my fear of falling and I can honestly say with the understanding, encouragement and support of the staff and trainers I am really starting to just love every minute of it. This is a great place!
Im an adult beginner rider, been taking lessons at jamaica bay,for a year now, from my very first day of trail riding,to lessons.i have found everyone from the cook, to the farrier,to the guys who take care of the stalls,n the guys n girls who take care of the horses, the instructors, the lady at the front desk,to the owner/ owners to be courteous, friendly and helpful.I eat there alot, and from where i sit,i hear alot of people ask questions to the staff and the owners and have never heard a response be anything but friendly and helpful. As for the care of the horses, they could not be cared for anymore.i love animals, and i would not be comfortable going there if they were not being taken care of properly .The owners themselves are riders, its not just a business to them, you can tell they love horses n love what they do,its a very positive environment, they would not let a horse be mistreated.

IN LOVE WITH THIS BARN!! – I came here after my barn closed in November of 2010. I LOVE IT HERE!! After my first lesson here, I became friends with the owner and alot of the trainers. In all my three years of riding, I never meet such a great barn. I dont know why people write negative/harsh comments about this place!! Those are the people that come once and never come back and say they hate it. Those people arent horse people. You have to get to know the barn. Dont think oh yeah its my first time and its gonna be perfect and my first lesson will be great!!! Once you get into it you never want to stop. COME ride here and DONT listen to those negative/ harsh comments!!
Jamaica Bay Riding Academy!!! <3 READ THIS – Jamiaca Bay Riding Academy is not a incorporation, its a family. I have been riding there since i was 6. I have come a long way.... And JBRA has helped me through it. Now i am on the MET team and it's practically my second home. Most people who walk into the barn of JBRA see what they do not want to see, smelly horses, mice and poop..... But thats your everyday barn! Stable hands muck out the stalls numerous times a day, and the horses are loved. They are brushed every morning and are untacked at the end of every long day. The trainers and guides are very, very nice. Trust me, you can't make Twix buck by making a sound. During the WHOLE year the horses are tooken care of not only in the summer. Pony Club and Summer Camp kids also love and take care of the horses. All the horses are sweet, GIVE THEM A CHANCE. The trails are absolutely beautiful and calm. Lessons are a great way to learn how to become a better rider. Just because you may of had a little rough experience does not mean you can criticize people you hardly even know! The trainers and guides do all they can to make your ride a safe and enjoyable ride. I'm 12 and i take lessons repetitously. The horses are wonderful and the food is wonderful! Pony rides are for children who are not capable of handleing a horse of their own. Pony rides horses are smaller sooo don't worry! Jamiaca Bay Riding Academy is a wonderful place. I recommend it to all people of all ages! Take it from me, I go there practically everyday, not the other reviews that have been there once. I LOVE JBRA!
The horses at Jamaica Bay Riding Academy Inc Stables seem unhappy, and it seems to me that they are kept for the primary use of trail rides in the summer which I am guessing is the main source of income for the barn. If you are looking for a trail ride in NYC, I would ask you re-consider supporting a place that keeps horses in such poor and unhealthy conditions.
Jamaica Bay Riding Academy – It is enough to esteem responses and all becomes clear that here still what?
The response of the young guy which has listed all lacks and in there and then their children's words denies? It is ridiculous.
Nasty to the pure will not stick
!!!! – I always wanted to learn how to ride the horse so I started taking classes there. It was my first class today and I can't describe what a great experience it was! If only i had more time to go there...
2nd WORST experience EVER! – To begin with I was already nervous about getting on a horse, but It is something I have always wanted to try! I also do love horses. From the moment I was there I was very unhappy with the lack of attention and profectionalism! I had a hard time getting my helmet to lock, and it seemed that no one really cared. They just wanted me to hurry up and get my ass on the horse so they can start the 4pm trail.
The male guide was like, " you don't really need the helmet" I told him " Ok well I am not trying to fall and crack open my head!"
Finally a male staff member with black hair, comes out of no where and helps me out, he was the only nice guy there!
I have NEVER been horse back riding before and they dont even teach you how to handle the horse. I was first only taught how to hold the ropes. I was nervous and the staff acted like my being nervous was only annoying them all! I was the only first time rider in the small group, and they could care less that I never rode before, they just expected me to know what I was doing, during the 5 min(if that) instruction time and shame on me if I did not know!
At first the ride was okay. For a few minutes I felt comfortable. The walk to the beach was nice. I was there with my fiance and was really trying to have a good time.
By the time we turned around to head back from the trial all the hores started to act up a bit. My horse I thought was good, until the male blond annoying instructor that was in the back with me, thought my horse was moving too slow. I on the other hand was comfortable with the speed the horse was walking. So this male instructor makes the horse buck to catch up to rest of the horses. I dont understand why he would make the horse buck if I am a first time rider! We was not even that far behind either!
I was so scared the horse bucked, but then stopped. The instructor made the horse buck by making a sound with his voice!
The horse stopped bucking after he was close enough to the other horses. So I was calm.
The famale instructor did try and give me a little more lessons on the trail since she finally realized I was having a bit of a hard time. She was more professional than the guy!
Just when I start getting comfortable again on my horse taco. The male instructor thinks my horse is going to slow again, makes the sound for the horse to buck. He Just takes it upon himslef , without telling me anything, and the horse bucks, but this time does not stop with the rest of the horses, and just keeps bucking even when I pulled on the rane.
I ended up flying off the horse!! I was just praying to god that I was not going to be a cripple! I am getting married next year so It was important that I was in one piece!
When I was able to get up from the ground the instructors asked if I was okay then tried to get me on the horse and clearly I am not a fool! I ended up just walking the rest of the way back from the trail. It was time for me to take control of myself, just like I took control over the fact that I wore the helmet when the instructor told me I did not need it! I dont even want to think about what would have been had I not went with my own instinct and worn one!
mean and rude incometent ppl – I've been to this place many times, and its amazing how these cruel ppl get away with it. first of all Anthony is a very moody and controlling guy. Everyone there is afraid of his wrath and moody temperment. He is mr, know it all. He can be charming and sweet if he is in the mood , or if your a sexy girl. His brother and father Tony Sr. are really nice guys. Their customer service sucks, most of the guides are15-19 yr old girls, who arent certified or have a clue. they are mostly underpaid kids who have no idea how to be a guide. I have seen many times how they let horses bolt, and ppl who have fallen off. Then that mean nasty biatch who sits in the front , she is tonys mistress is a major nasty biatch. never smiles and has an attitude. she messed up Anthony's marriage. Then there is this drug crazed guide Howie the druggie who has crippled a cop and sat in jail & he brags about it, he abuses and hits horses. That guy belongs in a mental institution!!!
The horses are old and are basically one step before the glue factory. He wont spend money on a decent horse. The saddles are total shyt too. I feel bad how they treat the horses. Starve them and neglect their basic needs. Many of the horses have bad feet and should be ridden I have seen how they stumble. Its really a shame. The lessons are a joke. There is this one fat teacher who screams at everyone. I have heard tony make racial jokes when he thought no one was listening. I heard him say " thoes damn kikes". jHe keeps raising the prices & the lousy boarding is like 1000$..!. The barn is disgusting, they keep the horses in these small tight stalls and really over work them. The beach and trails are really nice though. Also its shocking how they have no regard to safety. i know a guy who had his horse run off and he fell and cracked his ribs. a normal guide would neve let a horse pass, i could go on and on. overall you could have fun , but the nasty attitude really gives you a bad feeling when you leave. Most owners have a love for their horses. For Anthony its all about the buck.
