I guess we should have known this would be a disaster when the girl who answered the phone couldn't really describe where they were located. Luckily, we realized it was the old Benihana.
We were greeted when we walked in and asked if we had a reservation which we did. The hostess seemed flustered when we said we did not want to sit at the hibachi grill but at a regular table. She asked us to wait just a minute to see what was available. She came back to ask booth or table. We said either.
It took the waiter about 15 minutes to even greet us. We asked for water only, and he asked if we were ready to order. We were, so as we began ordering, he stopped us and asked if he could get our waters first because he needed to grab his pen and pad of paper. Don't servers just carry that with them at all times?? So he left, and upon his return, no water. He was about to take our order a second time but left to really get the water this time. He returned to get our order. We asked for a specialty roll first followed by one teppanyaki plate which was to be shared.
We realized the sushi was taking a while, but we remained patient as we realize that sushi is handmade and takes time. My husband asked the server about 20 minutes later if he expected the sushi to come before the meal. The server looked as if he had forgotten to order the sushi at all which was our fear all along. Meanwhile, we did get the soups that came with the meal. Those were pretty good.
Our sushi finally came, and it was nothing special. I had definitely had better. The server then asks if we would like to move to one of the hibachi tables because that's how our meal is supposed to be prepared. I said "no". We specifically asked to be seated away from the group table. Why would he not mention that the meal we ordered would be a problem if we sat at the table we were at? Even the hostess said we would be able to order any entree off the menu regardless of where we sat.
Next, someone other than our server (manager?) asked if we would need anything else...like our check! She actually thought we had already eaten since we had been there for about an hour. At this point both my husband and I both mentioned that our dinner was all we needed. She looked confused, asked what we ordered and said she would go check on it. She returned and said it would be 5-6 minutes...it was on the grill. Our real server came minutes behind her and said it would be another 5-10. Okay, fine.
it took them another fifteen minutes to finally bring the cold food to our table. It took a few more minutes to bring silverware to eat it with. We felt we had been very patient, but when my husband bit into cold steak, that was the last straw. We handed her the groupon we planned on using and said we didn't want the cold dinner, and the groupon should cover the two soups and sushi roll we did eat.
I wouldn't normally write such a long review, but I want to save anyone the experience we went through. If you want wonderful, hot hibachi and sushi at a restaurant that knows how to service both groups at a hibachi table and those at a regular table, try Nagoya on 620. THEY have their act together!
