Love/Hate relationship – Cambria Pines Lodge has great potential. Unfortunately, despite their offerings, we have developed a love/hate relationship with the hotel.
The grounds are spectacular. A short drive yields dramatic coastline peppered with the famous elephant seals! Architecture buffs and lovers of "lifestyles of the rich and famous" should head for a tour of Hearst's Castle. Stargazers will love the clear night skies sprinkled with the heaven's finest offerings.
Enormous rooms with country shabby chic decor, mini fridge and (gas) fireplaces. Suites have private mini backyard gardens. Pet rooms are on smaller side but beat the competition in the surrounding area.
The restaurant boasts home grown organic produce and an outdoor deck for terrace dining. Large bar has a nice selection of top shelf whisky, local wine and revolving local musical talent. easy to get lost for hours strolling the many gardens. The magical butterfly and birdhouse gardens promise young ones a glimpse of an elf or fairy.
Families will love the large pool and abundant free breakfast that trounces any continental offering elsewhere. Dogs will love the millions of "sniffs" on the many walking paths.
We always book their top of the line Superior Suite or Deluxe Rooms and have stayed more than 20 times in the past few years. While spacious and beautifully furnished, the beds are always filthy. This is inexcusable for a place courting wedding parties and certainly for this price range.
Hairs in the bed ( a variety), stains, even a dirty sock! All in what appears to be a "freshly made bed". Bathrooms have similar issues, dirty towels, dripping faucets, hair in shower/tub. We were never "early check in requests" either.
Waiting for a proper change of sheets/replace towels on a purportedly "cleaned room" usually takes well over an hour. This task is sadly left to the lone maintenance man who must "hunt down clean sheets" as the housekeeping staff leaves the property quite early.
As frequent guests, we are shocked and dismayed at how incompetent the staff is in addressing simple needs. The front desk staff tend to be rude, or very snarky and sarcastic leaving the guest to feel as though asking for clean sheets upon check-in was a ridiculous request. Granted on our last visit we dealt with a lovely young front desk associate who helped us patiently and politely-it was a first!
We love Cambria Pines Lodge for all its potential. We keep returning each time hoping they will get things sorted. We remain disappointed. Over 20 plus visits and the place is still not clean. At these prices, "Rustic" does not equal dirty. If you stay, check the sheets before sleeping-you may be surprised. Hopefully Cambria Pines Lodge will clean up soon.
