What's with the haters? – Lived in Playa for 10 years & I love the HDR. Not the most awesome Mexican food overall, but they have some wonderful dishes like the fried tilapia & good strong margaritas. The waiters are the best too. I'm thinking the venom in the reviews here is from people trying to get a free meal by posting bad ones. I'm getting really tired of that scam. HDR just opened another location in the old Berri's on Pershing & Manchester too.
Don't Believe The Hype: Hacienda Del Rey Is Delicious! – I just jumped on CitySearch to find the phone number for my favorite Mexican restaurant Hacienda Del Rey, only to see all these terrible reviews. So I just became a member on here so I could write an accurate review.
Hacienda Del Rey is an excellent restaurant, food is fresh, chips and salsa flow as soon as you sit down. There is a lady making fresh tortillas, and the margaritas are outstanding, a little pricey, but they don't skimp on the tequila. My two favorites are #1 Chief Special (Chicken breast smothered in cheese, mushroom, and squash) and the Shrimp and Scallop Special. Both come with hot fresh tortillas. The fajitas are also outstanding.
Plenty of parking in the back alley, and on the side past the Chicago Rib spot.
The WORST Mexican Food I've had north of Tiajuana!!!! – Ate the food and got massive case of diahrrea....was out of commission for 3 days!! Your choice on whether you want to go there, but I'd recommend you stay away!
Worst Mexican Food In Los Angeles and Atmosphere Was Awful – So, I have passed by this place many times and last week decided to stop in and eat. There were about seven people at the bar at 1:30 PM on a weekday and every single one of them were stone-faced drunk and staggering all over the place. I decided to eat any way. The table was sticky, the menu had so many typos on it it was laughable. The food tasted like everything was warmed up in the microwave. The waiters were clueless about customer service. The meu said the place was established in 1973...incidentally, that was the last time the bathrooms had been cleaned too...
DO NOT EAT HERE!
Disgusting!!! They reserved un-eaten food. – While eating at the tortilla grill with my girlfriend I had a good view of the kitchen area. I noticed that the waiters would clean off the tables and then when they were in the kitchen they would sift through the uneaten food and reserve the food to other customers. They had a bowl that they would fill with uneaten tortillas and a cook would grab them and throw them on the grill for a second to reheat them and then they tried to serve them to us. I paid the bill and left but felt like their reserving of others trash is a serious health risk. How do I know if the last customer had sneezed on the food or had hepititis? I will never eat there again. STAY AWAY!!!
Yuck. Possibly the worst Mexican restaurant ever. – The best thing I can say about this place was that the margarita was ok and the prices were cheap. Other than that... the chips were burnt. The queso was basically just a thing of melted cheese with a couple canned chiles thrown in it. Taquitos and salsa both contained hair!! Guacamole tasted like it was out of a grocery store refrigerator case. My roommate's enchiladas were "meh." Service-wise, I think our waiter was drunk, he mumbled to himself and wandered off in the middle of saying something (what, I still don't know!) to us. The decor was really tacky, with the way it looked they should turn the lights down a little so you can't see it. Honestly, I can't imagine ever going here again for any reason.
Decent food, tacky decor – I've had a few things here and I would definately recommend sticking with the standard Mexican fare -- I was not impresed with tthe ceviche and this grilled fish I got, but my girlfriends enchiladas were not bad. Service was good, and there were two bars (always a plus) and a tortilla maker who you could watch, making it a fun place all around.
Great Neighborhood Mexican Food! – I love this place - It makes no apologies for what it offers: great tasting food, very reasonable prices, modest ambiance and good tasting margueritas. Try the cheese enchilladas and the beef fajitas.
For those high-maintenanced people that must have their every whim catered to, have ample parking, etc. dont come here, this place is a good old-fashioned mexican joint with great food, friendly service, and very reasonable prices - A great bargain!
The BEST chips and salsa in LA!!!! – I love the food there! Try the tortilla soup!!! It gets crowded on Friday amd Saturday nights from about 7:00 on so service might be slow, but still worth it.
not worth it – Maybe it's becuase we had such a bad experiance here but I didnt like this place. First, there's very little parking and the only place to park is in the back alley. The restaurant is small and smelly. There service was awful. It took us 45 mins for them to take our order. Then we waiting another 45 mins for them to bring our food. Then we waiting another 20 mins for them to bring our bill. When we were finally able to leave, someone had parked behind our car and we couldnt get out. And to top it off the food wasnt that good. I'll never go again.
