Visitors enjoy endless shade amid the expansive picnic area outside this Spanish-style tasting room situated in the Santa Rita Hills. – In Short
Melville has become almost a defacto inclusion on California restaurant wine lists, but the entry-level familiarity does little to prepare visitors for the small lot gems they'll uncover in the process, let alone the grandeur of the gorgeous tasting room. Once inside the impressive structure, earth-tones form around wood beams leading to an asterisk-style ceiling, undernearth which, wine lovers sample the all-estate-grown flagship Pinot Noirs, as well as Chardonnay and Syrah, now totaling about 85 planted acres.
Amazing wines – Melville was the last place we hit, and I'm sure glad we did. The care they put into their vines and wines is so apparent once you take one sip. The Pinots are some of the best I've had since leaving Oregon; the Syrah is equally amazing. The unoaked Chardonnay was stellar, too bad they sold out. That's what you get when you have small yields--incredible, albeit few, wines. The tasting room is beautiful, too, and the staff often consists of the wine makers themselves.
