I've been Sam's client for approximately a year. When I moved back from Texas to NOVA last year, I was very anxious searching for a salon and a stylist who would not only listen to how I wanted my hair colored and cut, but who would also advise me on what was best for my hair, my face, my age, my lifestyle etc.
I had been seeing the same stylist for over 10 years - so it was very difficult to try someone new. I had even considered flying back to Texas every 2 months; just so I wouldn't have to change. However, after speaking to Sam on the phone, I decided to give her a try. I knew the moment I met her we were kindred spirits. Her salon is professional and unpretentious. She invested the time in getting to know me; my lifestyle, likes/dislikes, what I liked about my color and cut, and most importantly, she wanted to know what was going to make me a happy client.
As a blonde, she explained the nuances of color, low lights, high lights, and everything to help me understand her approach to hair color. From my perspective, her goal is to give the most natural healthy look possible; meaning, when you walk out of her salon; everyone will say "wow, what fabulous natural blonde hair" and they will not be able to tell you've had color and/or highlights.
I consider Sam an artist. She literally "paints" every strand of hair on my head. And I must say, her efforts have consistently produced rave reviews. My friends, family, boyfriend, and yes strangers - all commented on how beautiful my hair looked and even raved on how youthful and full of energy I looked. Sam should market her own version of the "fountain of youth".
On a different note, Sam's clientele are phenomenal, talented, successful women of all ages. I've met so many amazing ladies; my appointments always turn into mini-networking sessions. I leave Sam's salon feeling beautiful, energized and blessed! Thank you Sam. You have my highest recommendation! - Monica
After debating long and hard (i.e. years), and doing TONS of research, I decided to go with Samantha Banks. I used to go to Bill Lawrence Salon years ago, and after seeing her picture on another site, I remembered her face. I’ve been natural for 2+ years, and have been very leary about going to salons. I have probably only been to 1 salon since I’ve been natural. They were fine, but they didn’t cut hair at all, so that didn’t work well for me. I’ve also been wearing weaves off and on (mostly on) for the past 18 months, so I was in desperate need of a trim/cut.
The salon is upstairs from Salon Roi, so you actually have to go inside and walk up to the second floor. The salon is quaint and nicely decorated, but not overly done (2 bowls, 2 dryers and 2 stylists chairs). Samantha is very sweet. She sat and talked with me about my hair, my hair goals, and what I wanted to do during this visit. She explained some things about hair health and asked what products I had been using. I was happy to see she is all for growing long healthy hair, which is my goal. I haven’t had long hair since I had a relaxer, so I definitely need some help now that I’m natural.
She washed, blowdried, cut and flatironed my hair. I’m conservative (probably too much) about my hair, so I opted for some bangs that I could swoop side to side, and long layers. My hair was probably arm pit length before the cut, but is now a little past my shoulders. I had a lot of bad ends, so I’m cool with that. She did an awesome job with my cut. She gave me a curly style, which was cute. I wouldn’t say it was me, but like I said, I’m conservative. But because my hair is fine, curls don’t last long anyway, so by the time I was ready to go out that evening, my curls dropped considerably. I just wrapped my hair, and it looked great when I took it down; extremely bouncy and full of shine.
I have been getting so many compliments about my hair. To me, I look like my normal self (minus the weave), but people keep saying my hair looks gorgeous/wonderful/beautiful, etc. The cut is perfect. Ms. Samantha can cut some hair! She is a little pricey, but the information, product recommendations, one-on-one service and attention to detail made it all worth it.
I first found out about Samantha about six months after I moved to DC from California. I was so relieved to find her because she focuses on keeping your hair healthy. I never have to worry about getting too much heat on my hair and it causing irreparable damage.
Samantha helped me choose a variety of hairstyles (bangs, bob, etc.) that were flattering to my facial features, and I completely trust her judgment when it comes to cutting and trimming my hair.
Samantha is a talented stylist. After leaving the salon, I walk less than a block and am already getting compliments on my hair from men and women of all races.
Samantha Banks the Hair Studio is a welcoming place with diverse clientele and convenient location.
My hair is healthier than ever before thanks to Samantha. Not only does she take great care of my hair when I visit, she also teaches me how to care for it at home by recommending great products and techniques.
Every so often when I'm ready for a change she has great ideas on how to refresh my look, either with a new color or cut.
I was introduced to Samantha four years ago through a friend who traveled from NYC just to get her hair done in DC. I figured if someone went through that much trouble to see a hair stylist, it was worth a shot for me. After the first appointment, I got it. No one ever analyzed my hair and took the time to find out my hair history before starting. Samantha is a perfectionist and this time will be reflected in the quality of your hair. I have permed hair and a hair cut can take a while because Samantha will make sure it is cut perfectly, but I have never had a long wait, even if I am late for the appointment. I was so glad I found a hair stylist I could absolutely trust in DC.
I have been a client of Samantha Banks for over 4 years. I had just moved to the area and was looking for someone to do my hair. I found her by researching salons on the internet. I was struck by the glowing reviews she received particularly around her color and cutting abilities. After one visit, I knew the reviews were right. Samantha has a great sense of what color and style. She has never made a recommendation that I haven't loved. She also takes great care of my hair and keeps it very healthy. Samantha also has great clientele. When I visit, I not only look forward to a nice hair style but also stimulating conversation. I highly recommend Samantha's services. You will not regret it.
When Samantha first began doing my hair some 10+ years ago, I had locks and she was one of the few people I would let clean and twist them for me. I have since then gone to a natural hair style and Samantha is truly a wizard with the scissors!! A lot of stylists talk about being able to cut “natural” hair but very few can I my opinion. Samantha is always going to take the time to consult with you and make sure you are both on the same page as far as the cut, color, and treatments are concerned. She is extremely knowledgeable about her craft and practices it with precision and skill.
My daughter recommended Samantha to me; that's how good she is! She has clients of all ages, so when my daughter was getting married in 2009, I decided to follow her lead, and grateful to have done so. Samantha is especially well trained, experienced and creative. She used her exceptional listening skills as I described my problems and my hair goals. Then she delivered! My hair is healthy, easy to manage and stylish for my busy schedule. Salon is a relaxed environment in a great location near Metro. Two thumbs up!
I have been a client of Samantha’s for about 10 years. Her new salon is warm, cozy, relaxing AND has free WIFI. Her clientele is diverse which always leads to interesting discussions and at times, fabulous business and personal advice. Sam has made me a blond, brunette and a few shades in-between…never disappointing. She provides great cuts and is never overly “scissor happy.” I have had blowouts and wet sets depending on the look I was trying to achieve and she is the ONLY PERSON I would ever allow to give me a Brazilian Keratin treatment…and it turned out great! I have never met a stylist who is a perfectionist like her. For many years I had trouble finding someone who understood my texture of hair so when I meet her I finally just exhaled in happiness. In my opinion Sam functions and excels from 2 premises….her client’s happiness and more importantly, her clients having healthy hair. I recommend her without hesitation.
I live in Northern CA and in advance of a visit to DC, got a recommendation for Samantha Banks at "The Samantha Banks: The Hair Studio" from a cousin. After my first phone conversation with Samantha, I knew I was in good hands. OVER THE PHONE, having NEVER met me or my medium-tight S-curl hair, she answered all of my questions thoroughly and patiently. When I got in her chair, she remembered what we'd talked about during our several phone conversations and I didn't have to repeat myself. The first thing she did was thoroughly inspect the condition and texture of my hair. There's an area in the back of my head that grows slower than the rest of my hair and she's the ONLY stylist in a long long time who suggested ways to cut/style my hair to minimize the obviousness of this area while growing it out. Typically, though other stylists notice this area, they seldom have ideas about what to do and ASK ME for suggestions - I am not a stylist. She scheduled her time so I had 1-on-1 attention for the duration of my time there and she wasn't scurrying between me and other clients. I got a keratin treatment and it was the best one I've ever had - my hair was gorgeous! I don't like my curls totally straightened by keratins, and Samantha was the first stylist who understood the process, and hair, well enough keep my curl while adding manageability and subtracting frizziness. I've been disappointed by everyone I've tried in CA since experiencing the magic that Samantha has in her hands. Make an appointment with her. You won't regret it.
