Reviews for The Fireside

And the prize for most dramatic NW 23rd Avenue transformation goes to The Fireside, which replaced lauded labyrinth o’ tunes Music Millenium with a light-filled modern neighborhood spot sporting plenty of leather stool-lined bar space. Thoughtfully-positioned mirrors so you can check for brisket in your teeth, and two fireplaces round out the decor. Since where there’s fire, there must be smoked trout, eat from a menu of “outdoor-inspired” cuisine like picnic boards, elk chili, and the signature S’mores. While you're at it sip refined cocktails like the mezcal and rhubarb amaro-accented Backyard Grillin’ and A Foragers ‘tail, made with Isle of Skye scotch and mushroom tincture.

Six dollars will serve you well at this hot new NW 23rd spot's happy hour--try the $6 white cheddar and Mama Lil's grilled cheese or creme fraiche mussels, any of the half dozen $6 cocktails and perhaps best of all, the $6 s'mores.

Novo rustic with a cosmopolitan edge. Fireside's backlit bar trimmed in dark stained wood, inset with amber lights with an array of top shelf liquor, sets the focal point balanced by two open flame hearths. The front fireplace lounge resembles modern mountain lodge, and the back fire with its central cone shaped chimney flume anchors the tables seating. The waitstaff is exhubertley attentive, a mark perhaps of a new culture of casual friendly professionalism, so refreshing and cool. Try the inventive cocktails which earn on their own right a place among the elite of Portland. While the snacks and small plates offer the expected simple fare of olives and kale some unique offerings like fried chickpeas that arise curiosity more than an invitation. Be sure to look towards the main event of salads and entrees, like ribeye and trout, which demonstrate the the mark of a experienced chef with a unique blend of the classic preparation and courageous and inventive accompaniments.
