El Compadre

Home of the Flaming Margaritas features delicious food, drinks and fun

  • Fun, Friendly Atmosphere
  • Live Music Nightly
  • Great for Large Parties

El Compadre brings old school Mexico to Hollywood. Come enjoy the live music every night at 8pm at the "Home of the Flaming Margarita" and enjoy the wonderful food and friendly service. The family-owned restuarant features two locations filled with red vinyl booths and original Mexican decor, allowing you to feel the essence of Mexico right here on the Sunset strip. Get the tacos or enchilads verdes--it's all delicious. Come early and stay late. Enjoy this wonderful fiesta every day of the week at both locations.

Editorial Review for El Compadre – by Kelle Schillaci

The Scene
A slice of Olvera Street is transplanted to the Sunset Strip, with a dimly lit bar and an adobe-trimmed dining room resembling a quaint patio courtyard. The clientele, however, is anything but traditional: a mix of budding guitar gods and tequila-swigging old-timers glued to their bar stools.

The Food
This friendly eatery has been dishing out affordable, American-friendly grub since the '70s, but the unremarkable cuisine has always played second fiddle to the flaming margaritas. With a squeeze of lime, a generous splash of tequila and a touch of flame, El Compadre's signature concoction is always a crowd pleaser. Surprisingly tasty enchiladas Acapulco are stuffed with succulent shrimp and crab, while shrimp fajitas arrive atop an oil-sopped mess of flavorless onions, green peppers and beans. Simple Mexican staples--hard-shell beef tacos, triple-cheese enchiladas smothered in mole sauce, and overflowing burritos--offer the best, and safest, bang for your buck.

If drinking a soda, beware of the per-soda charge--El Compadre charges (and charges) for refills.

Know Before You Go

While parking can be surprisingly painless, the table wait inside can hurt, so be prepared.

This has got to be the worse Mexican food place in the entire SW. The service was lousy and not friendly at all. We had to wait and wait for something to drink. My husband had carnitas and it was extremely dry and crispy. I ordered Chile Colorado and regretted it. 1 out 3 pieces of meat were nothing but chunks of fat and the sauce was too water and tasted terrible. My husband and I had eaten at several Mexican restaurants and this is by far the worse. For the next two days my husband and I had upset stomachs. This place should be closed down before someone gets real sick by eating there.

Pros: Plenty of parking because no customers

Cons: Terrible food, unfriendly waiter, too costly for what you get

El Compadre is right around the street from me and the first few times I went with friends I enjoyed it there. After all $9 margaritas you'd say is a great price for being in Hollywood. Well if you are someone who is enjoys real tequila (not patron) then this is not the place for you. THey fill the top shelf tequilas with cheap bottom shelf brands. We went in one day as usual and this time we ordered the Don Julio 1942 which is $18 a shot, but I didnt care because it is my FAVORITE tequila of all. When we got our shots first of all they werent even the same color as anejo they were blanco and they tasted exactly like patron!!! We will NEVER go back there again. THey rip you off and you dont even know it. I would rather drive clear across town for Malo because they serve the tequila you actually ordered, not some other low grade brand. *tsk tsk* on El Compadre. And dont forget to notice the B rating for food....eeww!! I guess we do "get what we pay for" when it comes to this restaurant
