Late night (or early morning) Thai food for musicians and fans wanting to enjoy their satay and pad Thais amidst rock music and art work.
all about the brown rice! – this is a good alternative to fast food late night. i wouldn't make it a destination -- there are much better and more authentic thai restaurants in town. but if you're out late seeing a band or whatever and in the 'hood, then go for it. love the rock and roll vibe. and the brown rice is the best part. i'd stick with your typical stuff here, pad thai, tom kha, etc.
Walk in to say you've seen it and move on..... – Ok, I was always told that TOI was THE place for Thai in hollywood, but after going there multiple times I realized that all that old novel bull$&i! on the walls just didn't add up and I don't even think they cleaned the place let alone the kitchen.
I believe there method of preparing food goes as follows.... Vendor delivers food to TOI they cook as much as they can and disperse over the course of a few days, and then repeat the process. I say this b/c anytime I order the curry or soup it seems soooo watery and flavorless that I have to add their hot sauce which I am convinced got me sick!!!! Leading me to believe the stuff has been sitting around, and I only get sick if food is left out for long durations.
Service is sub par everyone seems to be in the worst mood, as if their hog (Rough Guys Motorcycle ie chopper) broke down on them, very unatentive and you may be waiting a while for the check....???? Do they want to make tips or are they worried I ll leave them less than nothing..... I have no shame when it comes to bad service toppled with bad food.
Plus there's a doorman at night???? (What is this some lame Hollywood club!!!!!) who has no idea what is going on, talk about a sheep walker... Even if absolutely dead he will ask you to wait while he checks for availability like he can't remember if there is nobody in the place.
The value of the place is not bad considering the portions, if you can even stand it. The alcohol is rather expensive but perhaps typical for the area.....???
Even their ice is horrible, but come on.... the place uses a snowcone machine the owner ripped out of coney island. DO NOT GET THE THIA ICED TEA YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!!
The bathrooms are borderline inexcusable regardless of their theme. I think if Motley Crew G&R and Snake of Eden had a threesome and had a litter of A$$ babies it would look like TOI's mens room!
Do yourself a favor unless you are any of the bands above and go to SUNSETTHAI.
Consistently good thai food – Thai food is pretty competitive business in LA. I've have eaten at probably a couple dozen Thai places since I moved out here and Toi is definitely one of the best.
Their food is consistently good. My girlfriend and I eat here every month or so and normally get the spicy fried rice and red curry. They are both really tasty and there is always enough left over to bring home the next day for lunch.
The atmosphere is very unique (in a good way) and welcoming. The staff is friendly, they play good music and you don't pay Hollywood prices for drinks. Old LP covers, album promos, neon signs and random art adorn the walls. It feels like CBGB turned into a restaurant.
Anytime I plan on going out to grab some good food, Toi is usually up at the top of the list.
Cute but they put MSG in things without warning – I ate there once, it is a cute restaurant with yummy food and good portions, interesting decor. I had a pad see ew and all seemed well. When we went to leave I got the most massive migraine ever, was throwing up all night and couldn't see. This only happens to me when I eat MSG. My boyfriend called and asked if they put MSG in the pad see ew and they said no, but it was pretty obvious to me since I hadnt eaten anything else but my usual for days. So watch out if you're sensitive.
good food long wait – Great thai food. Very eccentric. Since the food is great there is a long wait to get a table wish it was bigger. The good thing is it is open till very late. I say go for it.
THE WORST, RUDEST STAFF EVER...MCDONALS HAS BETTER SERVICE – WORKED IN THE RESTAURANT BUSSINESS FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS,, I WORKED FROM SOMETHING AS CHEAP AS MCDONALDS, TO THE PALM ON DOWNTOWN, AND I'VE NEVER SEEN A STAFF SO DIRECTLY RUDE TOWARDS THE CUSTOMERS.I WORKED AT BOSSANOVA GRAVEYARD SHIFT AND I HAD TO DEAL WITH GETTO, DRUNK, RUDE AND CRAZY BUT I NEVER GAVE THEM THE ATTITUDE I RECEIVED IN THIS PLACE. I CAME IN TO JOIN MY FIRENDS AFTER CLOSING THE RESTAURANT I WORK AT around 2:30 AM, THE HOST saw me and SAID "OH ARE YOU MEETING THEM"?? POINTING TOWARDS MY FRIENDS AND ADDED "WELL I DONT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING, THEY SAID IT'D BE 5 ONLY, AND NOW THEY ARE 8, SO I CANT SIT THEM TOGETHER", WAS KINDA SHOCKED BY HIS ATTITUDE. HE THEN WALKED AWAY AND MY FRIENDS SAT AT A TABLE WHERE TWO GIRLS WERE PREVIOUSLY EATING WHO DIDNT MIND THEM SHARING THE SAME TABLE AFTER THEY ASKED THEM, AND THE SERVER (A VERY RUDE GUY, WITH LONG HAIR, SHAVED UNDERNEATH HIS PONYTAIL NAMED CHARLY) CAME AND SAID, "YOU CANT SIT WITH THEM, IM THE SERVER AND I MAKE THE CALL" AND BY THEN WE GOT UP AND TRIEDTO TALK TO THE "MGR" AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO MANAGER, THEN THE SERVER SAID HE WAS NOT GONNA WAIT ON US AND WE COULD SIT THERE ALL NIGHT FOR ALL HE CARED, NEXT TO MY OTHERS FRIENDS THAT WERE ALREADY EATING , I WAS APPALLED BY THEY WAY THEY TREATED US, I DONT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HIS PROBLEM WAS, BECAUSE I HAD JUST WALKED IN AND WAS DRAGGED INTO THE WHOLE SITTING PROBLEM.... I WAS NEVER RUDE TO EITHER THE HOST OR THE SERVER, I ASKED TO TALK TO THE MGR AND THEY GAVE ME A PH # I CALLED AND THEY SAY HE'S NEVER AVAILABLE THAT HE WILL CALL ME LATER, AND THEY ALSO SAID THE PLACE DOESNT HAVE A MGR, WHEN IT COMES TO COMPLAINTS EACH SERVER DEALS WITH SEPARAETLY.... INSANE!!! ONE OF MY FIRENDS THAT WAS THERE WORKS FOR THE DOLCE COMPANY WHO OWNS DOLCE AND THE GEISHA HOUSE, AND WE ARE SERIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT WRITING A STRONG LETTER ABOUT THE WAY WE WERE TREATED AS CUSTOMERS....HOPE PEOPLE GET TO RID THESE AND NEVER GO TO THAT PLACE AGAIN....
Great Thai! – Toi was a late night stop, chosen based on Frommer's positive reviews. The actual experience did not disappoint.
We were lucky to find parking at a meter on the street; there aren't a whole lot of other options. Every inch of space is utilized for tables. New arrivals wait on the sidewalk outside until a table is available. (What do they do when it rains?) We were seated quickly at a tiny table along the front window. The atmosphere was an eclectic mix of rock, patrons' conversation, and the classic "Wizard of Oz" playing on several big and small screens scattered throughout the space. Thai food and the winged monkeys of Oz? Funny, but it worked!
From the large, two-sided menu packed with Thai offerings ranging from basic to vegan to really intriguing, we selected chicken satay and an interesting pumpkin/ eggplant/ fried tofu dish that the menu boasted was delicious. Both items arrived within minutes. The grilled satay was flavorful, yet a tiny bit overcooked, but the accompanying peanut sauce more than compensated. It was wonderfully thick, nutty and spicy ... totally unlike many of the salad-dressing-thin varieties we've experienced elsewhere. One of us actually finished the bowl with our fingers after the chicken was gone.
The pumpkin/eggplant/fried tofu dish was amazing. Large chunks of each main ingredient were mixed with mushrooms, then bound by a deliciously savory, garlicky sauce that was like nothing we'd ever tasted. The brown rice served alongside was actually more of a black rice, so thick and chewy that it retained the shape of the bowl from which it was inverted. The depth of flavors and textures was much more than we expected! All portions were large.
The only drawbacks were the wine we ordered by the glass (obviously uncorked too long) and service that was fairly prompt and basically courteous, but with no real interest in our dining experience.
Overall, the hip and satisfying Toi really delivered.
Low-key Thai food eatery – I went there on a Thursday night. The place was pleasantly populated and not too overcrowded. The menu arrived at our table quickly and soon our food was served too. I had the Yum Tuna Salad, with onions, lettuce, cucumber in a spicy hot lime juice. My friend settled for a veggie plate with broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, snow peas, carrot and cabbage in a tofu stir fried sauce plus brown rice alongside. I can't tell that this was gourmet food, haute cuisine or that the service was exceptionally good. This place is very casual with rock tunes in the background, rock star pictures on the walls and edgy art works and decoration attached to the totally busy walls. The menu is a kind of americanized, main menu items are typical Thai dishes though. Almost every menu item includes Tofu (soya products) and rice noodles. All in all it is a good place to socialize and have some tasty reasonable priced and spicy food.
Mixed feelings about this place – I love this restaurants cool interior with rock paraphernalia all over the walls, and my curry was delicious. However, there was a sticker on one of the tomatoes in the soup I ordered, and it was difficult to find street parking. The food itself was full of flavor, but the sticker kind of ruined the experience for me. Not sure if I?d come back again.
what happened? – It seems that the quality has gone down. I have been visiting Toi for years, and it has always been above average. Not so much these days.
Very Satisfied. – Food is very good, staff is very attentive and good hearted. May take some time to get seated on the weekends but it is worth the wait. Location is pretty good, not too touristy. I'm not really a fan of the decor which is kind of grungey, but I always leave feeling satisfied.
