One of the "Last Great Places in the Western Hemisphere" is in Franklin County. Honest. – A Pastoral Heaven in Our Urban Backyard
Just three miles south of U.S. 40, the park encompasses more than 3,500 acres, including swamp forests, preserved prairies and oak-hickory forests.
The park is home to the Big and Little Darby Creeks, both national scenic rivers. The creeks are prime areas for canoeing and fishing, and contain several endangered or threatened species of fish and freshwater mussels.
More Active Activities
For those who prefer less leisurely recreation, the park provides more than nine miles of hiking trails. The trails are perfect in winter, receiving heavy cross-country skiing traffic. Hardy souls can also go downhill sledding from the canoe access areas.
They Said It
It was the Nature Conservancy that gave Big Darby the "Last Great Place" designation. As for local chauvinism, Columbus Metro Parks promises "the view over Big Darby Creek will positively take your breath away."
