User review by leapop – The waitstaff is very knowledgeable of the menu and happy to make recommendations, though they don't seem trained in pairing wines with the dishes. The room is stylish without being uncomfortably pretentious. The food is tasty, although a bit more effort than necessary is devoted to creating exotic and unusual dishes. I would gladly sacrifice the gratuitous originality for larger portions. One oddity: once my companion's food came in a high-rimmed bowl, yet the dish required a knife and fork, and cutting food in a bowl is awkward. Mostly, this is worth mentioning as another example of Dragonfly's excessive attention to aesthetics (the food did look attractive in the bowl) over such things as function and flavor. Still, it's worth the trip, but expect to spend a lot of money, as the trimmings -- the lovely starters, wines, and desserts -- are helpful for rounding out the unpredictable main courses.
Amazing – This place is the best. I do not live in Ohio anymore and I find myself longing for Dragonfly's creative and inspired dishes. You will always find complex textures and multi-layed taste explosions! And everything is vegan. What could be better?: If the food was less expensive...
Thank you, Dragonfly – Columbus probably doesn't deserve to host such an interesting restaurant. I'm surprised it's lasted so long--not because the food isn't amazing but because it is so different, creative. This isn't vegetarian food; it's VEGAN food. I'm neither vegan nor vegetarian, and I consider it to be one of my favorites. The food is ORGANIC; of course it costs a bit more than the micro-waved, pre-made slop you'd get at your neighborhood chain hang. Go there, get something unfamiliar. You won't even miss the carnage!
Daring and exotic vegetarian cuisine. – The Scene
A modern dining room with sleek lines and paper-filtered lighting. A giant canoe by local artist Aaron Schroeder hangs from the ceiling.
Start off with the polenta arepa--a leaning tower of grilled eggplant with vegetables and herb tofu aioli--but skip the spring rolls. Entrees at lunch and dinner are all good; notables include tempura yams, jerk vegetable pizza, seitan barbecue and "dragon licked" nigiri tofu. At brunch, order the crepes, rice pudding or deli plate. To give your meal a perfect finish, try the featured ice cream or sorbet, even if that day's special sounds peculiar--it's guaranteed to be amazing. Dragonfly also offers some exotic, but decidely adult, sweets: The banana ginger fling is a banana and rum smoothie, glitteringly cold and devilishly strong. Other premium favorites include the lavender gimlet (Bombay Sapphire) and the cocktail sangria (Absolut Mandarin and Grand Marnier).
Who knew vegan food could be so good?!? – Although I am a vegetarian, I never found most vegan food to be very flavorful... until now! The flavors, textures, and presentation were wonderful. I wish I could have tried everything on this seasonal Winter menu. The Baby Spinach Salad w/ figs and smoked tofu was out of this world, as was the Crispy Maitake + Tempeh (wasn't sure if I would like this one, but it was great). The dessert - a rice pudding Napoleon - was the perfect way to end the meal. Finally, the drinks - Bubble Cocktail and Lavendar Gimlet - were probably the best, not to mention the most unique, I have ever had.
I can't wait to see what will be on the Spring Menu!
Also worth mentioning here was the great service - our server was very knowledgable and friendly. She did an excellent job of helping us select our meal.
Could have come direct from NYC – I just moved back to Columbus from New York, and in the three months I've been back I can easily say Dragonfly is the best meal I've had, vegetarian or not. The menu is very carefully thought out, the presentation is excellent, and the taste is wonderful. The decor is subtle and elegant, making it a great place for a romantic dinner. It's a big surprise to find it close to campus, near all the fast food and pizza shacks. The service was a little off the last time I went, and it's too expensive for me to eat there often, but if I want to treat myself to dinner in the campus area, it's my first choice.
Excellent organic eats – Dragonfly is one of my favorite restaurants in Columbus. The food is delicious and very artfully presented. The service staff are very professional and knowledgeable. The decor is divine.
