No-credit card policy and mostly VERY overpriced. – In a day when almost every book store wants to price their inventory based on the Internet, this store is no exception. They price on the high side and won't accept credit cards, or even ATM cards. On the positive side, there is an eclectic mix and something for anyone, but with their prices, you are much better off shopping oniine. I think what happened (which is a common problem) is that they started pricing things according to online stores in the early days when prices were erratic and there were few online sellers. Now they have an inventory of books with prices based on what they were selling for online several years ago. Prices online are much lower these days. When I'm shopping in a physical bookstore I want either bargain prices, or very rare books. This store has neither.
Ever dreamed of living inside of a house made of books? Spend an afternoon here. – The Scene
When you enter Karen Wickliff's, all you can see and smell are books. They are pressed into the shelves, they lie in long rows on the floor and maultiple tables around the store are overflowing with titles. The two-room space looks deceptively small because the stacks are so overwhelming. Small category labels pressed on the ends of the shelves and friendly employees are there to help you navigate.
This Clintonville institution is an antiquarian book-lovers dream realized. A thorough combing of the shelves can yield discoveries like early editions of What Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" or rare translations of Dante's "Divine Comedy." For those with less of a taste for the classics, many recent but used titles are also available. You may find anything from New York Times' best sellers to self-help titles to fairy tales. There is even a shelf devoted entirely to books about bullfighting.
A Real Booklover's Bookstore – If you're a devoted booklover and you try to imagine the ideal bookstore, Karen Wickliff will probably be pretty close to your vision. Eclectic and unapologetically, well, bookish, it's a tiny miracle.
