This wonderful outlet for African-American art, performance and events was built in the heart of the inner city in 1987. – The Scene
People of all ages can participate and enjoy African-American culture at the MLK Arts Complex with educational programs, and many public schoolchildren benefit from the special arts activities. The Corridor Gallery and the renowned Elijah Pierce Gallery, named after the famous African-American woodcarver/folk artist, host traveling exhibitions.
Dance, Poetry and Jazz
An example of the complex's usual calendar of events includes ballet, a poetry and jazz night, the Heritage Festival, the "Communion of the Spirits" quilt exhibit, a community theater workshop, literary readings and a children's storytelling presentation of African-American history. The complex serves the community by providing rental space for receptions, fund-raising events, political gatherings, conferences and meetings.
