Had a GREAT lunch!
Came here with a friend one weekday lunch.
We had a chicken wrap and a Sushi bento box (bento served at lunch time only)
Mine was the wrap- it was a nice size and came with a few small sides.
More like bite-sized sides, though, kind of like the Korean places do it.
Good flavor in the chicken marinade served with a sweet brown sauce and a spicy mayo sauce that complemented the dish well.
Friend had the sushi bento which looked amazing from what I could tell, and she seemed to enjoy that as well.
Love this place – I have been Shoku about 5- 7 times and I love it! I Their Sushi is amazing and fresh he makes it right there at the sushi bar and its fresh. My favorite items are the Pad Tai noodles with Chicken. But their Crispy Chicken is really good as well.. I can't understand the reviews. Some times the service isn't great but the overall food is amazing. If your in grandview and looking for a place to go for sushi thats the place to go. Please try the Pad Thai noodles and Crispy noodles you will be coming back for more!!!
this place is horrid – I have never been compelled to write a review of a restaurant before. it was that bad.
gave this place 2 tries in the last three months because I love sushi and it is in a convenient location from my house.
terrible both times. what a shame since the location is great....right in the middle of the grandview avenue area.
it smells like sewage in the bar area.
the sushi is average at best. the prices are high. they have no draft beer. the red wine was too warm and tasted like it had been opened then recorked from the previous night.
the service was slow. the staff just stands around looking at each other like a herd of cattle. the interior has a clubby 1999 feel which is unpleasant. the music was equally annoying...kind of a 1999 euro synth-pop chillout thing happening.
basically, this place just sucks.
THE WORST FOOD I HAVE EVER TASTED!!!!!!!!! – I went home and had the stomache flu because of a california roll. HOW CAN YOU SCREW THAT UP? Well I guess the owner dae knows. Just to make it clear afterword I went to the doctor and it was because of the food.
not the best – I've been to Shoku a few times and I have no complaints about the food, but the service is terrible. On a slow Sunday we waited foreveeeeeeer for our check and practically everything else. It was painful.
Won't make this mistake again. – 2 for dinner outside. Requested a table with umbrella, but told only for parties of 4. 10 minutes later party of 2 seated at larger table with Umbrella. Patio never filled up.
Food very slow, boring.
Server was nice and apologetic, but clear she couldn't fix it. Sever was not knowledgeable on food or sake'.
Wow , just awfull service and food quality. – Wow, I should have taken the previous reviews to heart. But we went anyway. This establishment has the worst service in town and is only topped by the poor quality food. It took 30 min to take our order, and 40 min after that to deliver the cold food. Item ordered does not mention it is spicy but couldn't even eat more than a forks worth and ended up splitting the spouses tastless cold entree. The place is small and we were one of three tables in attendence that night. You are better off just going to McDonalds. At least at McDonalds you get the poor quality quickly, so you can move on with your life! Tried to mention the issues to the manager but after waiting for her to show up for 13 min we left. This is the place to go if you want poor service....you even have to wait to mention the problems. If you like terrible service and poor quality food than this is the place to go, if not avoid this place.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY – I had been a big fan of Shoku for many years. It has been a bit since I last visited. I was told by several friends that their recent visits had been disappointing. I should have listened. I had a chicken dish that was awful. When I informed my waitress she just looked at me and smiled.
We spent $50.00 for two, without drinks, on this dinner. Save your money and go elsewhere. One additional comment goes to the service. It was poor, poor & poor. It was not at all busy, yet we were an after thought for our waitress.
such a disappointment – I had such high hopes for Shoku, as it came with good recommendations from friends in the Grandview area. I now have to conclude they know nothing about sushi.
I ordered the sweet potato roll and the veggie tempura roll with asparagus and squash. I asked if the chef could leave out the fried onion from my sweet potato roll, and the waitress said it would be no problem. She was wrong. My roll had almost more onion than anything else in it. In addition to which, other than onion flavor, the roll was pretty tasteless. My other roll - veggie tempura - was so bizarre. The veggies were steamed, rolled, and then the ENTIRE ROLL was battered and deep fried, not to mention that they didn't use tempura batter at all, but a bread crumb batter. Again, pretty tasteless, other than the flavor of deep fryer with old oil in it. My friend ordered several rolls with fish in them, and commented that they were entirely tasteless. She ordered one with spicy salmon in it, which had no spice, and one with cilantro. It seems they were OUT of cilantro, however, as the chef substituted parsley instead. Overall, in the rolls, ingredients were either missing, overused, old, or just ill-prepared.
The rolls were made very loosely, so that they fell apart as I tried to eat them, and they were so big, I couldn't comfortably eat a piece at once. This resulted in MORE sloppiness, as I had to take more than one bite to finish a piece. Finally, the pieces were sliced so thin that it became difficult to pick them up, further adding to the mess on my plate. I should have just asked for a fork.
The waitress was pleasant enough when talking to us, but seemed distracted, despite the fact that we were her only table. Furthermore, even though there was almost no one in the restaurant, we were hurried out almost as soon as we had finished our rolls. We still had wine in our glasses, but the waitress seemed to want us to get on our way. Finally, when we got our bill we realized that we were about to way over pay for what was at best a below-average experience. $9 for a veggie roll?!? So very over-priced for the overall quality. I'm sorry to say this Shoku, but you're not going to be in business long if you don't make some changes. Like, you know, flavor in your food.
If you're looking for good sushi in town, so far, Nida's is in the lead. My friends and I are on a quest to find the best, and have tried Nida's on High, Shoku, and Restaurant Hama at Easton. Nida's is far and away the best so far.
Marginal at best – We had high expectations for Shoku and they failed to meet them. Started out with the tuna tataki (lightly seared tuna) and it was terrible. Chewy and a fishy taste. The miso soup, edamame and Dragon roll were actually all good, but nothing about any of those things screams sushi since it is almost all cooked. My only recommendation is that Haiku has much better food and atmosphere if you want sushi. I am still searching for a good spot in Columbus if anyone knows of one.
