Waiting for Godot – My wife and I recently moved to the area, and thought the Grandview Cafe looked fun and inviting. When we walked in on an early weekday evening, it took about 5 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us, even though the place was 1/2 full. We were then seated, but never saw a server (or the hostess again) for the 20 minutes that we waited. No drinks, no nothing. We left rather slowly, hoping someone might notice, but no one did--all we saw were a number of hungry patrons waiting in vain for food and drink. Who knows? Maybe they're still waiting. I would to try this place again, but given the other reviews, I see my experience was not unique.
Magnificent food and friendly service – Great specials, especially on tuesday (meatloaf) night. and wednesday (mongolian porkchop) night. The service is friendly and those guys in the kitchen aren't too hard on the eyes either.
Staff asked us when we were going to Leave – I have had many bad times at the Grandview Cafe but was forced to give it one last try when Spagio Wine Cellar was closing at 11pm. I was out at Spagio on Tuesday with about 15 people for my birthday. We were having a great time and nonody was ready to go home so we went across the street to the Grandview Cafe. We were having a nice time besides the rude bartender. I was going up to the bar to order drinks since there was no service being provided at our table, which I didn't mind. I tipped the bartender 6 on 18 and he did not show gratitude but even looked at me like I was offending him. By 12:30 my sister went inside (we were sitting outside) to the bar for drinks. All of the staff was sitting down at the bar drinking, my sister asked them if they were closing to which they replied "we're open for another hour and a half but would like it if you would leave so we can go to Byrnes." I could not believe it!!!!! We of course did not leave. But we have not gone back, nor has anyone from our group.
The night was November 4th 2008, in case the owner wants to check the tape.
Great food but the service is terrible! – If Grandview Cafe could get some decent servers in there for lunch, this place would get 4 of 5 stars. Prices are right and food is great. Specials are also great. Our server messed up our drinks when she refilled them, gave us the wrong glasses, and gave me the wrong kind of soda entirely. When I had her take it back to refill with the correct soda, she brought the wrong kind again. Not sure if it just wasn't her day or what, but she also left us sitting at the table for 15 minutes between getting our drinks and taking our order, all the while she was texting on her phone, eating lunch at the bar, and getting other people's food w/o washing her hands. GROSS! When she finally took our order, she looked startled by us asking her to take our order, kind of like she thought she had already or something, but we still had menus, so you figure it out... When we finally did get our food, she slammed our plates on the table, rolled her eyes and walked away. She also got an attitude when I asked for ketchup. Seriously, the worst service I have ever had. Angela, you need to find a new profession b/c your service was seriously that bad.
Awful service – Four of us went to GC last night -- a Saturday at 7:30pm. We stood at least 5 minutes before we were greeted. Finally, we were greeted by a girl who then cleared a booth for us.
Drinks: two White Russians, two draft beers. Mixed drinks take time to make, but not this long. Drinks arrived, we ordered 3 cups and 1 bowl of french onion soup, and sandwiches.
I had already finished my drink when the soup arrived -- except my wife had ordered a bowl, and she was brought a cup. I was finished with my cup of soup by the time her bowl arrived. All of this was handled not by our server, but by a dude with a t-shirt that tastefully stated "I CHOKED JENNA JAMESON" -- I told him I wanted another drink, but he wouldn't take my drink order -- I advised I hadn't seen our server since we placed first drink order.
Server finally checked on us after sandwiches arrived. Two more White Russians ordered -- delivered when we were almost done eating. The second round of White Russians were in small glasses half the size of the first round. Server had no explanation.
Bill came -- all White Russians were the same price. When asked, server said the bar said the same amount of alcohol was in both drinks, but the first round had more milk in them. I said that couldn't be true, as the first round didn't taste watered down. He said there was nothing he could do. I asked for the manager.
The manager also insisted that the only difference between the drinks was that the first round had more milk in them. (Who offers "we watered down your first round" as a defense?) I started to explain that the second round didn't taste stronger when, in a fluster, he shouted he'd take them off the bill and he scurried off.
It took so long to get and pay the new bill that some woman waiting for a table actually asked us if we might be leaving soon because they'd like our table. Who does that?
Two stars as my fish sammy was actually tasty. I'll never have another.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? IF YOUR VIDEO SHOWS WE WERE SERVED PROMPTLY (11 MINUTES, AS YOU SAY), I'LL PULL MY REVIEWS & PAY FOR MY DINNER THAT NIGHT!!! – I can't believe that I am going 2 defend my original post below, but in order 2 keep the integrity of this website/resource 2 the general public I'm going 2. I would gladly sit down & view the video with him, in fact, I encourage it...but only upon his reply 2 this. I see no reason 2 go back otherwise. I can't believe that my wife & I would now b accused by an owner of such petty inuendos as a scam. This is ridiculous & an outright lie. My wife & I had no relationship or knowledge of the indivduals at any other tables at the restaurant. Now, 2 clearly refute the points listed by the owner. 1)Yes, the owner was right my wife did go 2 the floor..& sent the server 2 the table(isn't this the owner's responsibility 2 ensure the safety of his clients?). As far as giving the entire party drinks, that's not true. SHE was given a drink, & it was just the 2 of us ("entire party" ha!). 2)THIS WAS ALL A LIE (11 minutes???), & would gladly sit down w/ the owner and calmly discuss the video he has on file. He is right we were on the patio, but the server told us it sat under the lamp. I'd show him where we were sitting since he seems 2 clearly have us confused w/ another table. 3)I didn't come in ranting. I as calmly as possible discussed the situation w/ him, & didn't even raise my voice when the head bartender spilled dishwater on me. Yes he comped our drinks...all $9.00. 4)As far as a setup, I had no idea until I read the owners post below that the table next 2 us walked out on their tab. I have never or would never do such a thing, as I used 2 work in the service industry in the past know that I could never do that. As a matter of fact, if u watch "the video" u would clearly b able 2 see that the other couple initiated the conversation w/ my wife & I about the subpar service. And, yes I would agree that 1.5 hours is acceptable 4 a busy restaurant, but it was a Monday & it wasn't busy, just understaffed. I will pull both reviews if the owner can refute any of this. Your turn!

Oddly, they never ordered agin despite being checked on frequently.
Check printed @ 8:52 and sat at the table as AT THE EXACT SAME TIME.....
8:52 - Sat next to couple #1, Ordered 2 drinks and a chicken dinner while chatting w/them
9:04 - Refused their food, came inside and lodged a ranting complaint
While making this complaint and distracting me, Couple #2 ran out on their $69.40 check.

I HONESTLY CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'RE STILL IN BUSINESS...TERRIBLE AT BEST! WORST SERVICE I'VE EVER HAD, PERIOD! – My wife & I gave GC a 2nd chance last night. We had not been back since the OSU/Mich game last year when my wife slipped on an unclean floor less than 4 ft from the owner, who just stood by and watched her lay on the floor. He didn't attempt to help her up, apologize, or even seem remorseful. We entered GC last night to an empty bar with 3 bartenders standing around doing nothing. We waited to be seated for nearly 5 mins. I asked 1 of them if we could be seated and she said that it wasn't her job. After finally being seated on the patio, we ordered & waited for 1.5 hrs to get chicken wings and a chicken breast with a salad that was served at the time of the meal. During our wait there were 3 surrounding tables that were seated and served within 20 mins. However, all of them either sent there food back, received incorrect meals, or didn't receive everything they ordered. As our meal was served it was completely dry from sitting under lamp in the kitchen window for 30 mins or more. The server proceded to blame the food runner. We sent the food back & asked for our bill for the drinks. After a 10 min wait & no bill we went inside to get it from the bar. The server then spent another 10 mins at the computer trying to find our check, then she asked us what we had to drink. I asked to speak to a manager & they pointed to the bartender that told us that it wasn't her job to seat us when we entered. As I looked across the bar I noticed the owner, & I politely expressed my concerns to him. First he told me that we had 2 unlucky experiences, but then mentioned that he was aware that the service was poor at best, & that it had been that way for a while. Sadly, he remembered both of us from the fall that my wife took last year, & he should have since he did nothing to help her. As I was discussing the poor service with the owner the same managing bartender was washing some glassware & spilled dishwater on me. The owner just lowered his face into his hands. DON'T EVEN BOTHER!
Recent review, menu different now than past reviews – Stopped in for an early dinner. Seated quickly, friendly waitress. My burger was a good 'bar burger'. My wife ordered an oriental salad. However, when it arrived, there were items missing. I misremember now, but it may have been water chestnuts. Anyway, the waitress brought them out... plus sprouts, mushrooms, and 2 or 3 other things that had been forgotten. (We didn't even realize what was missing). She said that the menu had 'just changed last week' and the cooks were still learning the new dishes. This was in December 2007. She did like the salad, but would have preferred it be complete from the start. Overall, average. I wouldn't rush back but wouldn't avoid it either.
