Why Prison instead of Mental Health Hospitals for mentally ill persons. – My family's experience with the probation department concerning a son with mental issues has been very poor. We have been told there are no lock up type programs for the mentally ill in the state of Ohio. We have tried to baker act this son and haven't been able to due to nothing in Ohio laws for this type of problem. Prison is the answer to the probation depts instead of trying to make sure the mentally ill under their supervision are getting proper care and help. Surely the probation dept could do more to help the persons under their supervision when the families are willing to do whatever they can to help. We have already found that while this son was in Prison for 10mos a few years ago for non-support (due to his illness) that the prison authorities did not make sure he got his mental health meds and family members were constantly having to complain about this issue in order for him to get them.
Bi-Polar Disorder and Obsessive Compulsion Disorder are real mental issues not criminal, even though the person with these disorders act out in a criminal way due to their thought processes not being normal. We hope that one day the probation officers will have better training for evaluating persons with these disorders instead of putting them in the same categories as those who are truly criminals. Mental Health needs to be addressed in a more helpful manner than we have seen. I wonder how many others are treated as a criminal instead of mentally challenged under the control of such depts. Treat criminals as criminals and the mentally ill as people who are ill. No help here and there should be.
You would think the probation dept would have some kind of an alliance with the mental health clinic for persons under their control with these illnesses. MAC has helped others in my family with this disorder, as it is genetic, to live somewhat normal lives. There should be some way for these probation depts to see that these people stay on their meds. HELP HIM.
