Shake-shake-shake, shake your booty (your shoe, we mean. If its Shaker-made) to this collection of art and artifacts from a famously-Spartan local religious sect. – The Scene
This stately old house is not of Shaker heritage, but curators say the design nicely contrasts with the Shaker ideals of simplicity and stimulates conversation about what a "real" Shaker is. Nearby, between North Park and South Park boulevards, some vestiges remain of the North Union Shaker community that prospered in the Cleveland area from 1822 to 1889. Legend has it that the Shaker community, which emphasized the merits of celibacy, simply died out.
The Shaker Historical Society Museum keeps the Shaker ideal alive with displays of Shaker furniture, artifacts, and memorabilia from the religious sect often compared to the Amish. Shaker inventions on display include modern flat brooms, tilter chairs, clothespins and seed packets. The museum also features dioramas of Shaker life, complete with miniature wooden people. The gift shop sells stencils, herbs, candles, books, and miniature furniture, all of Shaker design. Perhaps the biggest single attraction of the museum is the apple festival each October.
