Goodman's is the best-kept West side secret I can think of. To those of us in Brooklyn, it's an institution. This is the place you take out-of-towners to impress them (though, granted, when you walk in the door, the decor is very, well, 1973). But one bite and you will be bowled over. They've got, hands down, the BEST corned beef sandwich you will ever eat. This is not hyperbole here. I don't know what they do to their meat-- something in the spices or in the cooking or what-- but it has an unbelievable almost buttery flavor that no other sandwich shop can touch. The sandwiches are huge-- maybe 4 or 5 inches thick with beef on fresh soft rye. Denny's the guy carving up your lunch, and you might catch his father Saul there, still running the cash registers at age 94. The waitress cracks bawdy jokes and slides cans of soda down the lunch counter like they do in movies. Seating is limited, but stop in on a sunny day (the waitress insists the place fills up on rainy afternoons-- "People are like ants," she says, "they come out after the rain") or during off-hours if you're in a hurry or don't want to sit elbow-to-elbow with salt-of-the-earth West siders.

ETA: Saul passed away last year and Denny quickly retired. Some new guys came along, bought the storefront and the old equipment, and are now running their own business out of Goodman's old stomping grounds. They call themselves The Cleveland Corned Beef Company, and they're just plain awful. The beef is way too salty, waaay too fatty, and sliced by machine way too thin. Poor Saul is probably turning over in his grave. Time to find a new corned beef haunt, folks.

Nasty – I was parked in front of Goodman's Sandwich shop while my friend went into Rent a Center to pay on a bill. As I was sitting there I saw the guy who makes the sandwiches touching the food WITHOUT gloves which is against the law as people handling food are suppose to have gloves on. Then I saw him remove a napkin from his pocket and proceed to blow his nose and then go back to making sandwiches. I did not see him wash his hands or anything. That is sooo nasty. I ate there once before and loved it but after seeing that I will not ever eat there again. Someone should report these people to health inspectors.

Hand Cut Cornned Beef – This place is a throw back to better days when sliced meat meant sliced by hand, not machine. Goodmans still cuts their corned beef by hand and it shows in the generous portions piled high on rye bread. Come for the food and be prepared to wait. Limited seating
