Underneath Fresno lies an intricate labyrinth carved from stone and invigorated with plant life.
– The Experience
Beneath Fresno is a curious network of tunnels built by Baldasare Forestiere, an Italian immigrant who previously worked on the New York City subway system. Using only a few hand tools, Forestiere tunneled an intricate underground garden for nearly four decades, creating more than 40 rooms, patios and courts.
Several of Forestiere's tunnels open up to the sky and come alive with exotic plants and fruit trees, some as high as 25 feet!
The architect didn't stop with his gardens; he continued to build and manipulate the hardpan rock by creating stonework and arches, some of which were patterned on Roman architecture. Still owned by Forestiere's family, tours are made by reservation only, often with family members as tour guides.
