A solid choice for Brit Pub Food – When in the Monterey area, you are given five options for the exhaulted British pub experience. I would most certainly say that this is the best of the five. While The Crown and Anchor pales in comparison to Pub heavyweights like Santa Monica's King's Head, it is as good as you're going to get on the peninsula.
The curry & chips (also served with a side of chutney) are probably the kings of the menu and are reasonably priced to boot. Their meat pies also do the trick. The lamb shank is doused unneccesarily in thick gravy, but on the other hand it is expertly cooked to a tender perfection.
My favorite attribute of C & A just happens to be their single-malt Scotch whisky collection. Keep 'em coming, neat. Good whisky just makes everything so much better. The other four pubs in town can learn a lot from Crown & Anchor.
HIts the spot! – If you're jonesing for a mostly-authentic English pub, I'd recommend the C&A. As another reviewer noted, it's not particularly conducive differently-abled people--it's downstairs from street level. It's a friendly place to relax with a pint, and the food's quite nice, as well. Parking can be a bit tedious, but don't give up--it's worth the trouble!
Authentic to the Max – Having spent two weeks in London just a month before we were in Guinness withdrawal. What a find in the heart of Old Monterey. The requisite fish and chips(minus the mushy peas), the pint after pint, the ambience of a room full of like-minded strangers- it was a fun experience, not just a very good meal. At almost half the cost of a similar experience near Covent Garden this was Anglophile Nirvana.
Best Fish and Chips on the Peninsula – It is, after all, an English pub. The ample plate of fresh breaded cod and traditional chips make the C&A fish and chips the best around the area. Their version of Sheppard's Pie is rich and tasty. The surroundings, in a basement, are authentic looking English pub, but I wouldn't recomment it for wheelchair or walker bound customers. Service is excellent, helpful, quick, and unpretentious. A great place to grab a bite if you are in a hurry. The quantity and quality of the food are well worth the prices they charge...in fact, they are a bargain.
Great Food Too! – We dine at the Crown & Anchor every time we visit the Monterey area. The beef pie and lamb shanks are rich, hearty and tasty while the fish and chips taste as fresh as the sea can deliver. A wonderful experience for the seasoned traveler or the young and the adventurous.
