Best Chinese! – This is the best Chinese I have had since I moved here. Starting with the service, this place makes you feel like a regular. Food was just right, I had some special requests and my waitress was more than accomodating. Will definately go back.

Horrible Service – I ordered take-out there and got home (20 minutes away) and found that my order had been filled incorrectly. I called and told them. After trying to convince me that I was mistaken, they told me that the menu on their website was outdated. They asked if I would like something else, and then said that I would be charged for it. After I said that I was not interested and would like a refund (the place was too far away to return), the manager hung up on me. I don't care how good the food is, this was embarrassingly bad service.

Good Service & Good Food – A family run restaurant that has been open 35 years, now with that track record they got to be doing somethng right.

The hot & sour soup is unlike no other, spicy and full of flavor.

Chicken salad is my favorite.

Accomodating chefs & friendly atmoshphere.

This place is good! – This is a good restaurant. I think if you are looking for cutting edge asian fusian then this is not your place. But, if you are looking for the classic chinese dishes, plus some very original ones, then this is the place. They just don't mess up the food, whether in house or take out (which is outstanding). Hats off to Lawrence Chu for doing it so well for so many years!

Don't believe the hype – I heard a lot about this place before I dined there last night with my husband. The service was good, but the food was less than mediocre. We started with hot and sour soup. It was drowned in black pepper, which really muted the other flavors that one expects from a good bowl of this soup. For our main courses, we had the sweet & sour prawns and chicken w/ sizzling rice. Both were unexceptional. I don't understand why people consider this an institution. Maybe this place was something back in the day, but now it just seems to be riding entirely on its reputation. You couldn't pay me to eat there again!

Chinese restaurant that understands diners' desire for salt, sweet and not too much spice. – The Scene
The big dining room at Chef Chu's looks a little dated, but the takeout business is booming. The family dinners and gourmet package deals are a cheap way to try a range of familiar Chinese-American dishes.

The Food

Lawrence Chu is one of the peninsula's only celebrity chefs. He's been familiarizing non-Asian folks with Chinese food for 28 years--at the restaurant, with his cookbooks and during his frequent cooking classes. The food Chu has championed is not a hard sell: Szechuan beef and kung pao chicken don't pack any serious heat, and meats are usually lean and free of organ delicacies. A good rule of thumb is to seek out the deep-fried goo-covered dishes: lemon chicken, sweet-and-sour pork, tangerine beef or candied pecans with prawns.

Best Chinese Restaurant – Chef Chu's is one of the best chinese restaurants in the Bay Area. Attentive services, healthy, fresh chinese food! I love the chinese chicken salad, sweet & sour soup and tofu with black bean sauce.
