GREAT PLACE FOR GOOD MEXICAN FOOD – My fiance and I have been there 8-10 times since we've moved to Portland from Los Angeles 5 months ago, and we have had a great time each visit. The staff is friendly, the food is outstanding; everything that we have ordered has been exellent!!! Try the Grill Maya Pork Steak , Pescado Veracruz and the 32oz. Spicy Mango Margarita.
Great authentic mexican food pretty cheap – My wife and I moved from California a few years ago and we are always in search of authentic mexican food. This place is one we continue to go back to. Great food, large portions. We just went and shared a La fogata nacho we got the small and didn't finish all of it. I am a huge fan of salsa and I love there's also good Guacamole, Some places have that fake neon green Guacamole. Not here Its fresh. Over all Highly recommend if you are looking for a new favorite.
tortilla soup! – Great mexican food with good prices. Go for the meals instead of the regular tacos, enchiladas, etc.
Our Favorite!!! – We have tried many Mexican restaurants in Beaverton and Hillsboro...La Fogata is the one we keep coming back to. Huge menu, great prices and the food is AMAZING. Don't let the fact that it's in a strip mall and doesn't have all the bells and whistles on the outside (like Pepita's) fool you, it's the best food you'll find. Try chicken or shrimp poblano (my favorite) or the camarones al mojo de ajo (my husband's favorite)!
Excellent mexican food! – My wife and I really enjoyed our dinner at La Fogata. It is so hard to find good Mexican food. La Fogata is located in a strip mall but don't judge it by its location. We went on a Saturday evening and were seated promptly. Our server brought us our menus and took our drink orders immediately. We were brought chips and salsa that were both home made. My wifes margarita was served in a huge goblet. I had a Dos Equis, on tap. Our food arrived surprisingly quickly for a busy night. This is usually a sign that a microwave is in use in the kitchen. Not the story at La Fogata. We each ordered combination plates. My wife had a taco and tostada. I had a chimichanga, relleno and taco. The food was wonderful. Fresh tasting. Good sized portions but not so much that any was wasted. I was especially thrilled that my plate had a large serving of both sour cream and guacamole, ordinarily you get a small dollop of one or the other and get charged for guacamole. We both ordered the shredded beef in our meals. It was very moist and flavorful. Our entire dinner totaled less then $33. The service was friendly. Decor was pleasant. Bathrooms were clean. If quality food is what you want along with good service and nice atmosphere La Fogata is the place to go.
Best Mexican food in town by far – I've ordered a lot of different items on the menu at La Fogata. My favs are the beef enchiladas, nachos, and I love love love the chicken fajita burrito. Super yummy! Everytime the food arrives at the table I'm amazed at how great it is. Its like the chef is making it for him/her self its so good....always a lot of cheese and full of meat etc. They don't skimp here.
The margaritas are another story....they are HORRIBLE. I've rarely met a margarita I didn't like but these are watery and not good at all.
Good food, decent prices, but frequent, careless mistakes – The good -- La Fogata has good food, and the people who work there are friendly. We came in often enough that they got to know us, and almost all of them seemed happy to see us. Food-wise, the chimis are great, the burritos are tasty, the mole enchiladas are good. And the prices are reasonable (except for the margaritas, but that's true of any restaurant these days). Other than Lupe's Escape in Aloha, it was our favorite.
The bad -- when my kids were small, we got into the habit of doing take-out, and kept doing that once they got bigger. Over time, however, we started having errors on our order on a more frequent basis. We'd ask for an enchilada, we'd get a quesadilla. We'd ask for cheese enchiladas with mole sauce, we'd get a chicken enchilada without mole. I got tired of getting home with food, only to find out someone's order was incorrect or even missing, and have to drive back to the restaurant. It got to the point where, before leaving the restaurant, I had to open each box and try to make sure everything was correct.
To make matters worse, they started charging for chips and salsa with takeout meals, even though that's free if you eat in. I checked with five other local Mexican restaurants, and none charges for chips and salsa when you order takeout. I could understand if we were just ordering chips, but when we spend $25 for our family meal, it seems stingy.
In June, I wrote a letter to the owner, Rafael Zavaleda, expressing my frustration with these situations. Silly me, I figured any smart business owner would want to keep his customers happy and we'd hear something, but I got no response.
So, after seven years as a customer at La Fogata, we have moved on to other Mexican restaurants.
Very good...most times – The food and the service can be a little inconsistant, but overall, very good food. The advantage here for us, is it is around the corner. If you are looking for "authentic" Mexican food in Beav in the hood, there are some food trucks that are wonderful. If you are looking for good, em, SoCal Mexi food, this is quite nice. Rice and especially the beans are very good, the house salsa, most times is very good, though a little less vinager and more real citrus, but I am being picky--bless 'em they use cilantro at least. The combos are their high spot--hence my quiveling about the "real" factor. The service is good and the management has been good--though the last time we were in there were whispered problems in a marriage which may effect the future of the good times that we have had in the past--which I hope were unfounded.
