No tolerance for BS – Here's the real deal about Heroes and Hobbies: There's no stores like it left. It's an anomaly. A throwback to a bygone era. Once upon a time every collectible store was like this, crammed chock-full of amazing vintage product and with a super-knowledgeable staff. Those days are long gone.
This is *the* place to find vintage Transformers, Manga figures, Godzilla, Marvel Legends, Star Wars, My Little Pony, Gundam, Comics, and Magic the Gathering (just to name a few!) His selection on all of these is second to none. This doesn't even begin to cover all the lines he carries. Not by a long shot.
Don't come to this shop looking for the current cookie-cutter products available out of the diamond catalog to a corporate store in the city. This is not that store, and that is not the experience you will get. Many of the items are one-of-a-kind and available nowhere else at retail.
The owner of this shop gives preference to his paying customer base. If you have no money to spend your best course is to continue to look at items online from the safety of your basement/lair. He won't put up with your B.S., he's not your Mommy, and he won't give you the time of day unless you have cash. That's literal. He can't take plastic. His hours are pretty simple if you work during the day. He's open *after* that. People without jobs find that difficult to deal with.
Good Experience – Tons of Transformers and of Pokemon singles. Helpful and knowledgeable staff.
Great place for Magic cards. – Picked up a bunch of singles the other day.
My experience – I've been here a few times over the years and it really wasn't as bad as people say.
They've got a massive selection of cool stuff and I never really felt like I was spending too much money on anything.
Sure, there's expensive stuff, but you don't have to buy it.
Considering you can look over the items yourself and don't have to pay shipping (unlike eBay) a lot of the deals are quite good.
As for the owner's attitude? I've never really had an issue. At worst he was distracted when I wanted to ask about something at times. Most of the time he was helpful and knowledgeable about the stuff I was asking about.
The two points I'd say need work on are his hours, and the layout of the store.
The hours are ... what are the hours? I've stopped planning trips to the location because I never know when or if they're open. If I'm in town I might swing by and see if the place is open, but I haven't been in there in at least 2 or 3 years. Fix the hours. Or at least post what the real hours are. You're killing your own business.
Secondly, the place is a bit cluttered. I understand it's a small location with a ton of selection, but it's something I think could use some improvement.
Other than that, people should be happy there's a retail alternative out there. I buy things there you have to import from Japan otherwise and trust me, his prices are cheaper than online. At least for those items.
It's a "see for yourself" kind of thing. Some people like it, some people don't. I'm more in the middle.
Everything for the whole family – We've been shopping here for over 15 years. They carry a huge selection of Pokemon, Magic, Transformers, Marvel and DC Universe figures. I strongly disagree with the negative reviews, they are left by people that spend no money at this store. As long you spend money, you'll have a great experience.
What a waste – Don't waste your time or gas. Apparently their hours mean nothing.
Worst Collector Store EVER – This place is a massive Crap Hole selling mass-produced over-priced turds.
First off, you have to be lucky enough to be there during his random hours. Forget the posted hours on the sign, as this turd monkey has no concept what business hours are.
If you are dumb enough to call the store to find out when the dude will be there, or find out why they are closed... BEWARE!
This guy has the audacity to call you back using his Caller ID, and will usually leave you a message like "Uhh saw that you called, and we're open NOW until 1am, so if you want to come back, I'll be here for awhile..."
So say you find some nugget of trash this guy may have, and make an attempt to purchase, he doesn't even accept Cards and makes you pay cash. If you don't have cash, good luck navigating to an ATM nearby.
What about the products?
All of this turd monkey's higher end boxed items are sun faded and in shelf-worn boxes, and of course, are way over-priced.
You may have the coolest crap on the planet Max, but if you don't sell em, you still got em.
Thanks, but I'll stick to Things from another World, or even ebay.
DO NOT VISIT – Despite the mixed reviews on the Internet, I took a chance and drove from Gresham to Beaverton to your toystore. Yes, you had a huge selection of action figures, comics and memorabilia - despite your odd odd hours - but what I couldn't believe was how you intend to stay in business with the way you treat your customers! I patiently waited my turn and asked you if you had a couple specific things and you said "Yeah, I got those" and then went along muttering to the other customers about some comic book story arc or another. I had picked out a few things while I had been browsing and then saw one clear plastic tub with the item I had asked about inside, sitting out in the open among the other toys. When I removed the lid to inspect the contents, you bit my head off and sarcastically told me that "I keep things in tubs for a reason." I apologized and replaced the lid, calmly took the items back to the shelves where I found them and proceeded to leave. You couldn't just leave it at that? Instead, on the way out you shouted above your customers heads "Sorry you couldn't play - I saw you put your items back!" While I was debating whether or not I wanted the few things I saw interest in while browsing your heaping unorganized piles strewn across the small store, I couldn't see paying over-inflated prices (which were far above online prices as well as current store prices), AND having to put up with your poor attitude. I hope you choke on a Lego, A-hole.
Beware! – I stumbled upon this place a while back, so I decided to check it out. After several failed attempts at visiting the store during hours of operation (the owner opens shop whenever he feels like it, which is usually not until the late evening, even though the posted hours indicate otherwise), I was finally able to get in.
The guy's got a pretty good selection of Star Wars figures, I'll give him that much. Unfortunately, said figures are priced well over that of even the greediest of scalpers. Like the previous poster stated, he tried to justify these insane prices by giving his "life's so hard, nobody appreciates me, I've got a kid to feed, etc." speech, and he quickly followed that up with a thorough "I hate everyone who complains about my 300%+ markups".
Anyway, he had a couple things that I'd been seeking for years, so I foolishly gave in and bought them. Blinded by my desire for these hard to find collectibles, I went back a few times, and I was always appalled by his rude, crude behavior, but I figured I'd just endure it to get what I wanted (I'd been ripped off on eBay, so I saw him as my last resort). He even offered to throw in some weird cartoon p0rn VHS tape with one of my purchases. What the freak?
Anyways, after a time, I came to my senses and realized that I was getting butt slammed on these purchases. I confirmed this fact by checking prices online and calling around. The guy had been hosing me repeatedly. Now, granted, it was my fault for being so stupid as to let him, but it doesn't justify the fact that he was cheating me.
So, I said screw it, and vowed to never go back. Well, the owner of Hobos and Hippies (as I like to call it) decided that this was unacceptable and decided to harass me by calling me several times a day (I made the mistake of giving him my number so that he could notify me when certain items came in). I told him to stop or else I'd notify the authorities, but this didn't help. He continued to call for several months, usually to swear at me, or to ridicule me because of my religious beliefs.
I know this review is too long, but to sum it all up, this guy is a freakin' goon. One whose business practices are absolutely despicable. I would highly recommend you find another source for your collecting needs, as they do exist (I discovered this after doing some research). If you do decide to disregard this review and visit this "establishment", please don't bring your kids. The owner is extremely vulgar and has violent tendencies to boot (he once grabbed a baseball bat and threatened to beat a dissatisfied customer).
Bitter owner + high prices – After repeated attempts to visit the store (the hours are not really set in stone) I was finally able to step inside. I was somewhat in awe of the guy's selection, he had a lot of stuff. He told me he was relieved I wasn't some soccer mom because he was sick of people bitching about how high his prices were. That wasn't the best place to begin. His prices on new/current items were $5 higher than retail. He wanted $6 for a well-played with, loose star wars figure. His prices on used vintage items were about 10 times higher than what you pay on Ebay. An example: you can get a vintage AT-AT on Ebay for about $30, he wanted $50+ for one that was missing most of its parts. He wanted $12 for POTF Star Wars figures which were so massed produced that they have almost no collector's value whatsoever. He spent most of the rest of the time I was there complaining about costs of doing business and how nobody appreciates him. I will never go back there, no matter how desperate I am. Things From Another World was about $5 cheaper on everything, and they don't have the bitter attitude.
