A warning: if you purchased a “groupon” type certificate from Double Take Deals which was advertised in the Clipper Magazine (Dec. 2012 – Jan. 2013, Gresham/Clackamas Edition) be forewarned that you will not get $30.00 worth of food for the cost of $15.00. As you go through the process of purchasing, there is no mention that this restaurant will only allow you to use 1 certificate per table. You don’t actually find this out until after you have paid and printed the certificate – it is in the fine print. We thought it was just a fluke, because who in their right mind would purchase a certificate for $15.00 to turn around and get $15.00 subtracted off their bill? I guess Tippy Canoe just wanted me to pay for a portion of my dinner ahead of time on line. Needless to say, they would NOT accept both certificates and repeatedly told us that the owner, Shirley, had signs up in the restaurant for the servers to absolutely not allow more than one. It sounded like the staff was threatened in some manner, because they would not budge, even after they agreed how silly it was to get $15.00 worth of food for $15.00! They said they do this so they can get repeat customers – I’m not sure what kind of customer would come back after realizing they had been taken advantage of though?!?
We went to Tippy Canoe for a birthday celebration. When they brought out the initial bill, the total did not reflect a subtraction yet for either certificate. So in the confusion of trying to reason with the server, Monica, and the manager, Allen -- no amount was subtracted at all! And we gave them one of our certificates, plus 15.00 more dollars for what we thought we owed for the second certificate. So all in all, we paid them $30.00 extra for both of our certificates, plus we are out the $15.00 that was initially paid for the purchase of the certificate to Double Take Deals!
We have called the restaurant twice now, and have “gotten the run-around.” We don’t want to go so far as to say that they are dishonest, but it sure seems like that is what is going on here. We have been told to call back and speak with the owner, who is mysteriously not there when we call. A reputable business would ask to take your name and number, and ask when a good time to call YOU would be – not the other way around. We have been very polite and reasonable, but told them when we left that we would never be back.
Oh, by the way, the food was definitely not worth the price – it is more of a diner type quality restaurant. And my wife felt sick the whole night after eating the crab cakes, which were fluffy on the inside, but overcooked on the outside, and had very little crab. And I had watery, freezer burnt halibut. But the clam chowder was quite good. In fact when the server realized that she forgot to serve a bowl instead of a cup, she insisted on sending us home with a to go cup of chowder. Please think twice before going to Shirley’s Tippy Canoe – because your boat, er umm…canoe might get sunk! We will update if this ever gets resolved.
$4.00 to substitute a baked potatoe and $1.00 to add onions! are you kidding me??? Only came here because Tad's was slammed. Food not worth the price. Will not be back at these prices.
I have eaten at Tippy Canoe many times. The prices have gotten higher, however, the food isn't always worth the price. I have continued to go because I like the location and I like to help local businesses.
I will never go back to Tippy Canoe again, though.
I emailed the email address onthe Tippy Canoe website for events. I am getting married in June and I thought this would be a nice place for my rehearsal dinner. There is enough space and it is close to my venue.
After almost two weeks of waiting for a response, I finally called the restaurant. I spoke with a girl who told me that email address goes directly to Shirley herself, the owner. She took down my name, phone number, and email address and told me she would make sure Shirley got back to me.
This was days ago. I have not received a single email or phone call.
Apparently Shirley's Tippy Canoe, although empty everytime I drive by, is doing so well that my business isn't worth her time. I feel sorry for the servers who will loose money due to their owners awful customer service and business practices.
Best food hands down! – I see folks saying how expensive this place is and I understand. However, this is balanced by having the best freaking homemade food around! Add to it, if you are lucky enough to get Shirley to wait on you, you will have an experience you won't soon forget.
Don't be fooled by its tucked in the corner outward appearance. Inside is large and decorated so lovely. Add to it jazz in the evenings and this place is awesome.
My favorite is a Sunday morning breakfast. Be fearful of the the truckers or loggers breakfast. My daughter ordered and I swear she got 6 full plates of food!!! Everything we have eaten there is to die for. Made from scratch family recipes. Good home cooking in beautiful establishment. Keep up the good work Shirley!
Expensive and not worth the money spent. – My husband and I decided to try Tippy Canoe because we heard it was good and live close by.
Out first time their the place wasn't very busy and it took almost an hour to get our breakfast. The food did not taste as though it should for the price we paid. I had no interest in going back, but I had a $25 gift certificate from Restaurant com and since the options for our area our slim we decided to give it another try. I called ahead to make sure there were no restrictions for the gift certificate and they said they would honor it. When we got there the waitress explained that they get alot of counterfeit gift certificates and have been trying to remove their restaurant from Restaurant com. She also said they would honor this gift certificate this one last time and then no more. I explained to her that I had a $50 credit for gift certificates and had printed off another $25 one for future use. The food showed up much faster this time, but while waiting my husband and I noticed an overwhelming smell in the dining area that was unpleasant. The best way to describe it is was that it smelled like wet cat food. The food was ok, but my grilled salmon was dry and at one point tasted how cows smell. I think for a $16 breakfast dish that the salmon would taste better than that. We noticed on the way out a new sign posted on the door saying that they would no longer accept Restaurant com gift certificates. I am stuck with a gift certificate I can't use and won't be able to redeem for another restaurant. Thanks Tippy-Crappy Canoe for once again another dissapointing meal. I think I will save some money and go to Elmer's for breakfast next time because at least it won't be crap. That's the last attempt from us to give them a chance to measure up.. Two times too many if you ask me, but being in the restaurant industry for so long I was hoping that we had just caught them initially on a not so great day.
Delightful, friendly place with delicious food! – I live in Vancouver, WA and we were down the Gorge decorating an outdoor Christmas tree and were on our way back, when my Sister-in-Law suggested we stop in for dinner at Tippy Canoe Bar & Grill in Troutdale. So we're adventurous and did! We all totally loved the atmosphere. It's delightfully decorated for Christmas. The staff was so friendly and helpful. And whoever cooked each of our meals was a master chef. We were warned the servings would be generous and they sure were! The Reuben sandwiches couldn't have been better. The Canadian burger juicy and delicious, and the Halibut and fries awesome. Might I add, my strawberry margarita was spectacular also! We sure will spread the word about Shirley's restaurant to all we know (it's worth the drive). The prices match the quality of the food. Splurge and go this holiday to Tippy Canoe Bar & Grill. You won't be disappointed! Kids will love all the cute decorations!
My opinion – I grew up in Corbett and had never been to Tippy Canoe. For my brothers 39th birthday we finally went. It was a great experience. Tuesday night we were the only table there. There were a couple people in at the bar but that was it. Since we were the only table our waitress was very attentive and the portions made my husband very happy. I had the grilled Salmon and then the bread pudding they both tasted great. The prices were high but we had got a $25 GC from restaurantcom and that really helped. You justy need to remembe to have cash with those GC.
Tremendous! – The drive to Troutdale is well worth it to meet Shirley and enjoy a wonderful meal. The food is delicious and plentiful thus justifying the price. For breakfast enjoy the stuffed french toast or seafood omelet.
BEST HOMEMADE FOOD IN TOWN!!! – Shirley has made this road side tavern and wonderful family friendly place to go!!the food is wonderful, from her Stuffed french toast(to die for), to the best piled high ruben, you cant beat it!
She is always doing something for family event, Santa breakfast for the kids to the mother&fathers day brunch, everyone is covered! my family and i are glad we are local so we dont have to drive 20 miles for this great place! thanks to shirley for the great food!
