Inconsistent Food – On our previous visit, the food was a 5 star and on this visit the food was a 2 start. The beer and wine are 5 stars and their service is a 4 star. When they get busy sometimes hard to get a waiter. Really nice outdoor seating when the weather is nice. We keep trying to find a meal on the menu that is really good and consistent, but we return for the wine and beer. We go the same time on the same day and it is as if there is some new cook.
The worst customer service experience ever – I just want to begin by stating that I generally love McMenamins. This location in particular is quite convenient and has a relatively comfortable atmosphere. With that said, the service at Market Street Pub is quite possibly the worst I've ever experienced in any restaurant/"pub" establishment.
My biggest qualm stems from my experience with a server named Brandon. I've somehow managed to get stuck with this guy as my server the majority of times I've been there (which I presume is because he always works weekends, which is when I typically go to Market Street). Each and every time he's provided terrible, rude service.
With his long, douchey, Justin Bieber haircut and his double D breast implants, this guy cockily walks around like he owns the place. He's one of those types of people who probably has a pretty shitty personality but constantly tries in desperation--yet ultimately fails--to cover it up with a steady supply of tactless, mean spirited sarcasm. He thinks he's super witty and acts like he's putting on a comedy performance where he's playfully mocking his own audience, but he's really just a terrible server with no concept of customer service. I don't come to Market Street Pub for a low-grade comedy routine; I come here to relax, eat, and have a drink with my friends.
I typically just bite the bullet and put up with this guy and his belligerent antics, but last night was the final straw for me. Every single thing that this guy said and did was blatantly rude. He deliberately got my order wrong and became extremely snide with me when I politely asked to have it corrected. He rudely slammed the food that I had originally asked for on the table and walked away without saying a single word about it (even a simple "sorry about that" or a "here you go" would have sufficed). He later took my dishes from me by loudly and smugly saying, "hey, let me take these out of your face." He then ignored my table for the rest of the night (I was with only one other person).
It's pretty frustrating to know that I gave this guy and his employer money for treating me like complete crap, but I certainly won't make that mistake ever again.
I love this place ! – There is always a wait when I go here but I always have so much fun. Great to have it next to PSU. See you there !
Lousy, rude service. – I used to go to the Market St. Pub every now and then because of the good beer and decent happy hour menu. The few times I have ordered off of the regular menu, what I received was pretty disappointing. Cold, mediocre, sloppily assembled sandwiches for 10 dollars. Yikes.
Its McMenamin's, so, y'know, you'll have to wait an eternity for everything. I don't usually mind slow or incompetent service, especially since some of their staff is pretty nice. But lately, every time I go the wait staff and the people in the kitchen are just... rude. And, c'mon, howabout some affirmative action here. Almost everyone who works at the Market St. Pub is a grouchy, cocky, 20-something white male. Do I have to deal with a smug, entitled oaf every time I want another beer? Is it worth a good beer and a half-decent burger to put up with this? Probably not. Slow, incompetent, AND rude service. Avoid this place.
Terrible Service – I am a regular customer at the Market Street location. I live nearby and often go in for lunch or dinner. Normally the service is sub-par, but tonight it was deplorable. There were very few customers in the restaurant and my friend and I ordered beer and two hummus plates. The service was slow as usual, but that was to be expected. Half way through the meal we realized that there appeared to be mold in one of the orders.
We ate what we could and politely informed the waiter when he asked if we wanted to close out. He agreed that there was evident mold and apologized.
Seconds later, the cook flew out of the kitchen to aggressively inform us that the blue cheese is right next to the hummus. We apologized and laughed feeling a bit stupid and humiliated by the whole situation.
A few minutes later, the cook reappeared at the bar as we waited for the bill to arrive. He proceeded to make fun of is within earshot saying something like, "'There's mold on my cheese!' That's what cheese is!" Earlier he also mocked a customer who had complained about the wait time on their meal "I'm starving!" he parroted in a whiny voice. Frankly, I would rather starve than return to an establishment that treats their patrons with such contempt.
I have worked in customer service throughout my adult life and I realize that it can be terrible. However, open aggression and mean-spiritedness is totally uncalled for. The abysmal service we received was inexcusable.
great menu items. prompt and friendly service – Lovely service at this mcmenamins. The sweet potato fries are amazing and they try to help customers get a seat as fast as possible. Hurray.
Give em another chance – The new menu rocks, there's a new staff who provides pretty good service and the beer isn't as bad as some people on here are saying. I'd definately go back.
Worst McMenamins In Portland – Look, I like McMenamins. I moved here almost two years ago and the truth is, for pub food it's not all that bad. The beer isn't great, but I think it's at least drinkable (sorry home brewery guy, I think it's better than Pabst, and I do have taste, thanks).
But the Market Street Pub is just full on horrible.
The service is non-existent at best. You know if you're going there to leave yourself at least two hours to eat what should take no more than a half hour. I honestly think the wait staff is just tired of a billion students wandering in and out of there, which would be acceptable if Cheerful Tortoise wasn't doing the "local student pub/bar" much better. (*A little shout out here for the small businesses on Park and around the corner: The Park Avenue Cafe, the new pizza place, and Super Dog are all worth your time. )
Market Street Pub is the kind of place that when you get your bill, you'll wish to hell you'd gone anywhere else.
Oh yea, PSU students: if you must have a McMenamins burger or french fries, order take out! You won't have to deal with the staff and you can pick up a sixer on your way home. All around cheaper...
Keep Looking! – I relocated to Portland in Jan 2006. McMenamins Market Street is near my home, so I stopped in to give it a try. I stood waiting to be seated for 10 minutes in an empty dining area as the wait staff chatted about their recent holiday adventures.
I have returned on four subsequent occasions, only to discover that poor customer service is the norm here on Market Street. Absent are the things that make a dinning experience pleasurable and possible. Specifically; utensils, napkins and parts of your order. Hopefully the Market Street location is like this only because it is a distant outpost in the Mcmenamins Empire and rarely visited by the front office personnel.
Next time you are visiting SW Portland, scratch Mcmenamins Market Street off your list of places to consider. There are many exceptional places to eat around here, this is not one of them!
Truly saddened – This used to be my favorite restaurant. Poor McMenamins has gone from good to bad to horrible. All the staff that I have come to know and love are gone and have been replaced by cold, unfriendly people. It is now next to impossible to get anyone's attention. To make things worse, just after this staff change, they raised the prices on everything. I understand you have to keep up with inflation, but at least give something in return. THEN, they took the tenders and tots off the happy hour special and changed the chicken strips from the tasty morsels they once were to some greasy deep fried pieces of bread. After a little spat I had with one of the waitresses the other night, McMenamin's has gone from being on my "probation" list to my "flat out boycott" list. My heart hurts.
