Gone down hill – We have gone to this restaurant many time in the past. Recently, Three Square opened again for breakfast on the weekends. Unfortunately, the restaurant should not have bothered if they are not going to hire decent servers or bother with decent food for breakfast. The past couple of times we have gone, we have found ourselves virtually ignored for breakfast. The portions are smaller, the servers seem downright rude and bothered even to serve you or seat you at a table. And frankly, the menu is overpriced for what you get for breakfast. I think that they only reason that they draw a crowd on the weekend is because of the farmer's market nearby. Move on, drive down the road to the wonderful Seasons and Reigons, and don't waste your time with breakfast at this place.
NOT family friendly! – We found Three Square Grill by searching "Family Friendly" and "Lunch" on Citysearch. When we walked in, the owner (I know it was the owner because her picture is on her website) shot us a "you better keep that kid quiet" look. As we were waiting for our bill, our toddlers started laughing and our waiter told us to keep them quiet. The owner came out from the kitchen and shot us ANOTHER disgusted look and we quickly paid our bill. On our way out, the only other table commented on how well behaved and cute our children were.
Listen, I understand there are some places that you should simply not take children to, but I obviously was mislead due to the Citysearch categorization. If you have children, DO NOT eat here. I have never felt like such an outcast by the owner and wait staff. If you do not have children, enjoy the food - it is very good, but unfortunately, we won't be going back.
Amazing pickles, beautiful veggie plate, delicious LOCAL food – Maybe its because the chef has his own business brining all sorts of goodness, but the picklopolis plate at Three Square is amazing. I have brought three guests, at separate times from out of town and they rave about the food. The veggie plate is nothing short of fabulous, with baby artichokes (in season), carrots and whipped yams, etc. They pretty much load you up with whatever is in season, and with some grits and mashers on the side, it is THE BEST...the wine list is very affordable and they source local, so you could actually meet everyone who supplies the restaurant if you so wish, from the pork to the jam to the honey, it supports local suppliers. What more can I say. It is delicious.
Great neighborhood spot! – We re-located to SW Portland from the Bay Area last year, and Three Square has become our home away from home since then. What the place lacks in exterior charm, it makes up on the inside, service and food are always great, and from our first visit, we've always been welcomed like old friends.
They could use a bigger waiting area, but that's not too big a deal.
We always go Tuesday nights, which is fried chicken night and Sunday brunch which rocks, and they do the same on Saturday, though it usually a bit quieter then.
We've never gone for lunch but have had the okra hushpuppies and pickled samples at night too.
A nice try. – The food is overpriced for the serving size. They have some things on the menu that I would like to try if it were not for the fact that I was glared at when I walked in and t he kitchen staff kept glaring at me and my mother as if we had done something wrong by coming in. That did this place in for me. My chicken was....well... rubbery.
The jalape?o jelly was fun.
Good Food, Snail Pace Service – Okay, if you're going to spend 14 dollars on a slice of meatloaf that tastes like, well, meatloaf, you expect to get good service as part of the price. Yes, the food was good with the exception of the stale bread brought first to the table. The wait for the drink order on a not booked night was excessive.
The wait for two simple entrees was excessive.
The wait for the check to be brought was excessive.
(There were open seats-what's the wait staff do on a busy night?)
More frustrating-the hostess walked away with the card and proceeded to get into lengthy chit chat at other tables before processing the sale. I was hoping that part of the dining experience would be to feel - I don't know, "welcome" at the resturant rather than ignored. If the idea was to open a place for just your existing friends to dine you could save the rest of us the bother of being disappointed and not put an "open" sign on the front door.
A tip to the waitstaff: Saying "thank you for waiting" doesn't work as well as saying" Sorry that you had to wait."
The first is appropriate before service.
The second is approriate when service has failed.
Still thinking about it... – I truly am ashamed of myself for not returning back since my first visit during the summer. I ordered the shrimp and grits and its heavenly. I honestly think about that dish once a week and am wondering why I have not gotten my act together and gone back. You're letting yourself down by not trying this one.
Three Squareriffic! – Although I don't eat here as often as I'd like it's by far one of my favorite restaurants! The food is very creative, has many of my favorite stanbys that I can count on and specials that change with the seasons. Best mealoaf I've ever eaten!! The service is excellent and run like a big family. Great place for dinner or brunch as well. Well worth the reasonable prices. You can't be disappointed!!!
Excellent brunch! – Bringing out of town guests to brunch at Three Square is a tradition for us. They always want to go back to this place. The service is quick and friendly and the salmon hash is excellent. For inventive egg dishes, this place can't be beat!
Home cooking in an unexpected location. – In Short
A dated-looking shopping plaza in Hillsdale may not be the first place one looks for well-executed flavors and a well-priced wine list, but the daily changing menu delivers just that. Comfort food concentrates on local, organic ingredients (reputedly grown in the owners' garden, among other sources) and everything from the bread to desserts are baked in-house. Weekend brunch draws a crowd for its salmon hash, bagels and lox and shrimp and grits.
