This zany Hillsdale cafe is a fun meal, but I'm really writing this tip for their tamales, which I get at their booth every time I go to the PSU Portland Farmers Market, unless I'm too full of Lauretta Jean's pie (rare, but you never know). Yucatan chicken is the best, and say yes when asked if you want salsa (spicy) and sour cream (extra, please).
WORST WAIT STAFF EVER!!! – First I have been to Salvador Molly's many times and had a very nice experience. I no longer live in the area and wanted to stop by and enjoy the food. What I got was a really bad experience instead.
Yesterday afternoon I visited Salvador Molly's for lunch with some friends. When we entered a young man with glasses asked us where we would like to sit, either in the dining area or the bar area. We were cold so we wanted to get away from the door. The young man had to clean off the table that we wanted in the dining area, which I think was the first thing that upset him. Then as we were going to sit down there was a screaming child that would have been right behind us screaming in our ears, so we opted to go into the bar - that was the second thing that made him mad. So we went into the bar and we were COMPLETELY ignored. Three other tables came in and were served water, given menus etc. We did not even get acknowledged. So we finally got up and left. Then the female that was on duty looked at me funny - (I think she knew what was up) I told her that we were leaving as no one would wait on us. She was very unfriendly and said that they were the only 2 wait staff on duty and that we were being inpatient and was very snotty.... Then I told her that there were others that came in after us that were waited on. She had a snotty comment for everything we said.
I don't think that I have ever had such a terrible experience in a restaurant. I can tell you that I will not be visiting Salvador Molly's again.
Great - 10 out 9 – One of the best in PDX, only once was it below par.
Absolutely nasty – We came on a Sat. night and it was busy. So, we waited 20 mins. outside in the rain. Wind was blowing so cover was not helping much. We still had a good attitude until we were seated. They sat us at a table for four, but we had 5 people, so they just stuffed another chair at the end of the table jammed next to another table. What a joke.
We order food. Waitress is OK it is obvious she is way busy. Daughter got a nice long blond hair in her lemonade. But other than all this we were anxious for some food.
Food arrives 1/2 hour later and to say it was gross is being kind. Obviously this place must serve good food, but we sure did not get it. My Djoubuti dish had WAY overcooked lamb, soggy bread and runny peanut butter sauce. Completely inedible. My wife got the jambalaya and is was just so wierd tasting it is hard to describe. The fish tacos were bland. The rice was as dry as the sun and the kicker was we had to pay to eat the Balls of fire. I could understand if she (my daughter) did not eat them, but she did. They taste nasty and the reason she did was to get on the wall of flame.
Overall terrible experience and never ever even for free would I eat there again.
Love this place!! – This is not your typical dining experience. The atmosphere is fun and the staff are nice. There are many food options to fit all dietary needs. The food tastes great!
AWESOME gluten-free choices! – I read the review about the hush puppies and I guess that guy got some bad ones...? Mine were delicious, I have had them 3 times. I hope they always taste as good as they did. We usually sit at the bar, we enjoy the noise and hussle and bustle and like to talk to the bartenders. I love the food here. Of course this isn't going to be a "fine dining experience" and only someone from PA would choose to bring a toddler here. It's noisy. It's Salvador Molly's fer Christsakes.
One my favs and least favs all in one – I've alternately loved this restaurant and hated it. When I first started going here it had an eclectic and great menu. Which slowly turned into mostly Mexican-ish fare. I stopped eating here for about a year. Then they changed again, and were once again all about "world" cuisine. The Jerk Chicken was soooo good. Not over-spiced or dried out. Had a great flavor that was not overpowering. Then recently they changed again. The Jerk Chicken is now half a chicken slathered with an unusual sauce. Not nearly as good as before. Every time I fall back in love with this place they change their food and I end up avoiding them for a while. I wouldn't mind so much if that was their deal. A new seasonal menu every few months. Otherwise try some consistency please!
Uggh. – Just skip on the joint. Bad service. Corporate Food service style shortcuts...nothing fresh.
Avoid at all costs....... – As a recently retired Retired Pennsylvania State Certified Executive Chef / Culinary Arts Instructor (for almost 40 years), and newly relocated resident of this fantastic state, I feel qualified to say "this was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had".
The noise level in the restaurant was horrible, augmented by the cackling cow seated directly behind me.
The appetizer ordered for our party of five plus a toddler, had an eggplant compote that was fizzing on the tongue. When I suggested to the lovely waitress that they check it, she promptly removed it and came back in a short time with a replacement (explaining that the chef said "the first one was from the bottom of the container and probably was bad".
When our dinner was served, my was tasteless. I did not care for it and decided not to eat it. The waitress once again extended herself by removing it from our bill.
Nobody in our party was overly thrilled with their respective dishes, but I guess I am more discriminating and found fault to the point where I said I would never return.
The final straw was the serving of "HUSH PUPPIES" for which I understand Salvador Molly's is famous.
They were, and I kid you not, as hard as rocks. When I bounce one on the table to show one of the waiters my displeasure, he explained that they have been having a problem with them by not being able to deep fry enough on demand so they have been making them in advance, causing them to reach a state of petrification that would rival the pre-historic fossils that have been unearthed over the years.
Suffice to say.... I am done with Salvador Molly's and shall never return.
I suggest you as a reader take my advice and avoid this place from the start.
love it! – We love this place! Its is very unique and awesome drinks:) Always a homecooked meal.
YUM! YUM! YUM! – Love this place It's nearby and delicious. I believe there used to be a second location that is no more - which was over by Belmont. Too Bad as it's a wonderful place to connect with friends over fun food that ignites your tastebuds! The beverages are also something to experience if that is what you do! : )
