This zany Hillsdale cafe is a fun meal, but I'm really writing this tip for their tamales, which I get at their booth every time I go to the PSU Portland Farmers Market, unless I'm too full of Lauretta Jean's pie (rare, but you never know). Yucatan chicken is the best, and say yes when asked if you want salsa (spicy) and sour cream (extra, please).
We always love going to good old Salvador Molly's! We haven't been as often since we had the kids so when a deal came up on Sharing Spree it reminded us we should go back! Yep! Still yummy! Definitely more of a date night than a family adventure for us but definitely a place to go back and take friends! Remember to drink a glass of milk BEFORE you try the Great Balls of Fire :)
i came here because i had a groupon and when i showed my server that when i sat down, he was a jerk the whole time!!
on the groupon, it says to show your waiter before you order.. it must be so they can give you bad service! he never came to ask how our food was. i wish i remembered his name. but anyways, he got no tip for his crappy job.
the food was decent. very small portions for what you're paying. the margaritas were light on the tequila.
probably not going to return.
drinks good, food bad, Salvador Mollys PDX – 10 years ago I loved this place. It's colorful, international in food an decor, and has a great beer and drink menu. However, the food has not been great for years. I don't know when the cooks changed, but it was more than a few years ago. Now it tends to pick up every food trend, good or bad, that passes through portland--gravy on fries, etc. I think it's supposed to have a pirate feel now--as in the cook of the ship isn't that great and food isn't that fresh. All we had today was a side order of fries and they couldn't get that right. They had the heat (barely warm) and texture (chewy) as if it was 20 minutes at least sitting out of the hot oil under a heat lamp. There were only 3 or 4 tables of people in the restaurant, how can you screw up fries?
They seem to pride themselves on bad service as well. Not only did they leave a pitcher of water on our table (read 'we don't want to have to come back to fill your water') but the waiter didn't even fill our first glass. We had to serve ourselves! The drinks are good and I will likely go back for those, after all, i can eat free peanuts while i drink
My Only Favorite Restaurant – Salvador Molly's in my only choice.
When I order the Pampas Chimichurri Steak, I wiggle in my chair with joy and excitement. It is always delicious and cooked to my taste!
My husband and I go there as often as we can and are always extremely pleased with the food, service and price. He always says that it is the best dining out investment he makes.
I can't wait to to eat there again!
pirate lunch! – First off, the habanero fritters are really hot. but they are also really good. I wouldn't suggest them if you have to do anything important later in the day though. You have been warned. Otherwise I'd suggest the Jerk chicken. Juicy, flavorful, and filling, you won't be disappointed.
Ok, but not worth it – First of all, the service was good. It was busy but we were seated and the waitress was friendly. We finished the jug of water though and it wasn't refilled until a while later.
Yes I finished the Great Balls of Fire challenge but it was difficult not because of the heat but because it taste like crap. The fritters were tasteless and SUPER dry. The salsa was ok though.
With that over I waited for my food along with my wife's and four others. I expected at least decent food since there's so many people eating here but I was dead wrong. My tamale was dry. The chicken was dry and way too much maza (corn meal?). All my sides weren't even that good. None of us like our food. The best dish was the onion rings.
The food in general tasted very generic. I could walk into any Mexican restaurant (or Thai and any other curltural food they serve) and I'm sure I would get better tasting food.
The six of us walked away with a $110 bill. Kinda pricey and totally not worth it.
Some great, some just OK – Our family that includes 3 small children decided to check this place out. I downed a couple of fireballs. They were hot and tasted ok but I wouldn't say anything to go wow-wee over. My wife ordered the fish tacos. They were better than average.
I think there were 3 major things I didn't like about the place = the kids menu didn't include a drink and getting them a small pop or lemonade sets us back 2 bucks each. The seats/seating was something out of a poverty stricken country (maybe the image they were shooting for??). The bill was a bit high - most likely because of the kids drinks.
Some small irritating issues - the pinwheel and cheese was too mozzerellish (sp?).. The kids burrito was some monsterous thing that was just ok. I really think if they are shooting for a family atmosphere it would help if they take another look at thier kids menu.
I did like the co-owner or manager stopping by to see how things were, I thought they had many unique dishesand they looked very good. They really pile on the food there so I'd suggest you consider sharing a dish unless you like leftovers.
The place is small and parking is pretty bad. I think the place being small isn't really bad....it's kind of fun being chummy with your fellow diner, maybe share a few of his fries, etc. I kind of wished they had something other than halbenero for hot stuff. It's neat they have this but it would be great if they had several other homemade hot sauses to choose from.. I gave 4 stars because the other dishes looked pretty good. Based on our experience I think it would be 3.
Too loud and grimy – We probably won't go back. The food was good enough and reasonably priced. The problem was we ate in the bar and the music was so loud we couldn't converse with each other. The ice machine/blender often was louder than the music.
It seemed grimy inside and the grease stained sidewalk out front was the first turn off.
.... how to say OW and YUM at the same time. – OWWWW!!!! I was balsy enough to try the food here at a spicy level above 15 and I regret it. Not that it wasnt excellently prepared, which it was, but because my mouth is on FIRE!! The food was unparellled amazing. But at the spicy level I requested, wow, I can only eat a bite per minute. And much internal blowing!

Salvador Molly's Child Abuse – This is NOT a family friendly restaurant. I work near Multnomah Village and really enjoyed their diverse menu. I bragged about it to my wife and kids. I took them there on a weekend. First, the service was horrible. We ordered at the same time as a couple at the next table. They were served an appetizer, their meal, and multiple drinks before we even received our meals (about 45 minutes). I can get passed bad service for good food. What happened next is egregious. My 8 and 6 year old daughters started crying while finishing their meals. My wife and I asked what was wrong. They said their mouths were on fire. We called the waiter over. He chuckled like a caricature in the show "Portlandia" while explaining that they use the same fryer for their kids meals (dino chicken pieces and fries) that they use for the famous Great Balls of Fire made with habenero peppers. The waiter left after the visible anger in my body language. A "manager " came and delivered a weak apology to me and my wife (not the girls). BOTTOM LINE: Don't go here with kids. They are reckless. Thank God, Allah, Buddah, Yahweh, or whatever PC gnome or tree is currently popular in Portlandia that my kids didn't have an allergic reaction.
Tony thank you for bringing this to our attention. I want to apologize for your young ones getting spicy dino nuggets. I have an eight year old daughter as well and could not imagine what I would have done. We have a clear system in place to make sure this does not happen though obviously we slipped up. I want you to know that the Chef and I have resolved this to make sure this does not happen again. I assure you that we take care of our guests and their children that come in and hope that you can find it in your heart to give us a second chance.
