They were horrible. The most unprofessional company I have ever experienced. Beware - their reputation is good, but for my "small" project (80K!) they were seriously lacking.....lacking interest, attention to detail, efficiency, communication, integrity. I was not only shocked at their unprofessional behavior but at the supervisors lack of knowledge or expertise. When they get bad reviews on the web they have employees log on and write 10 positive ones.
Seriously, use a smaller company and save yourself many headaches and money!
Experienced in remodels: Hammer&Hand is the BEST, hands down – We have owned 6 old houses in 5 different states. We have done at least a dozen large-scale remodels/additions over the past 25 years...so we know a thing or two about how jobs can go. Currently, we live in NE Portland and my elderly dad lives with us -- we had a desire to build a "sunroom" off the east side of our house so he could have a better view of the world outside. We went with Hammer and Hand after we saw some of the jobs they had done in the neighborhood. The entire experience, from first meeting with Sam to paying the last bill, was a complete pleasure. The sunroom addition is spectacular; people frequently stop their cars and come to the door to ask who built the room. Every single H&H person was friendly, professional and extremely skilled. If the H&H price estimate seems a bit higher than other bids you may get -- well, experience has taught us that a lowball estimate does not mean you are going to end up paying less. The H&H practice of time + materials was the best way to cost the job -- and we would not do it any other way in the future. If you want a wonderful remodel/addition experience and product, call Hammer & Hand
Wouldn't use anyone else – Hammer & Hand are the reason our house gets a little more awesome every year. They have jacked our house up 5 inches, poured a huge new foundation (we live on a hillside), torn out an entire side and installed custom articulating doors, that let us open everything up in nice weather, added on a side room, and done countless other small jobs.
We are always on a budget, and Sam and Daniel have been cool with doing things as we can afford them. Aside from their great wealth of knowledge, and fun and interesting problem-solving, the people that work for them are people I would hang out with in "real life," which is saying a lot if you've been around construction crews at all.
All of their bids have been either right on, or just slightly over, and a few things even came in cheaper than we thought they would. These guys are straight-shooters; I've never known them to be less than honest, and I've known them since they started, 15 years ago.
I would not hesitate to recommend them to any of my friends (and I have, many times), and plan on having them continue to work on our house in the future.
my fabulous kitchen – Daniel and Aaron helped me to build my dream kitchen on an amazingly low and strict budget. Aaron was on my contractors if they were more than 3 minutes off schedule! That's my kind of management. We did have to deal with one ornery sub (not their fault) and Aaron went to bat for us and they whipped them into shape, making sure everything was corrected, and now I boast the most amazing custom walnut cabinets that look like something out of a mid-century dream. The craftsmanship is out of this world. I could not have had this caliber of workmanship on such a tight budget if it were not for Hammer & Hand. I can't imagine hiring anyone else for both my personal and professional projects.
Great People to have around the house – I have hired this company twice. The first time, it was a full kitchen remodel back when they first started up and more recently to remodel a Master Suite including a bathroom, they also helped with a basic home face lift; whole house painting, front and back yard landscaping.
I was impressed with the overall knowledge about available products, materials already there and what would look best to match the two. I had an older home when I remodeled the kitchen and although, the kitchen had an updated functionality they were able to maintain the integrity of the home. When I remodeled the Master suite, they were on time and communicated with me every step of the way. One of the great things that is rarely mentioned about Carpentry crews are how likable they are. Every person who I encountered was professional including the Subcontractors.
I would recommend them over and over again.
Ignored Budget, Deceitful & Poor Quality Workmanship – We chose this construction company to do a major remodel of our house. We based our choice on their reputation and their likable personalities; I wish that we had spoken with a few prior clients. Hammer & Hand seem like honest people, unfortunately we were wrong.
We provided architectural drawings, told them how much we had to spend and they provided an "estimate". When the Estimate came in too high, together we reduced the scope of the project and re-estimated. With assurances that we were now on budget, we gave approval to start construction.
Unfortunately their attempts to estimate their own labor costs were completely unrealistic. They were off by $100,000 ON THEIR OWN LABOR.
About 3 months into construction we realized that the project was going to be over budget. We asked to meet and he said "What can I say... I told you that we could do your project for your budget, I told you what you wanted to hear ". We were shocked.
We *never* would have started the project if we had known that they had no intention of staying within our costs.
In addition, some of the subcontractors they used did unblievably poor workmanship, did not follow supplied specifications or even industry standards... and often we were billed more than the "bid" amounts. We found later that Hammer & Hand often did not get actual "contracts" with their subs and sometimes only had verbal agreements or a $ scribbled on a business card.
Long story short: BUYER BEWARE
