the best in sellwood – adobe rose has exeptional food that is both tasty and kid freindly.I have eaten there for about 6 years and i have enjoyed every single time. i highly recomend it.
Yes Virginia, there is New Mexican food in Portland – Recently an Oregonian review claimed that there was no New Mexican food in Portland other than the new place being reviewed. No so. Adobe Rose has been serving up New Mexico dishes for 20 years in Sellwood-Moreland. It's a neighborhood place, and many if not most of the customers are on a first-name basis with Larry and Terry, the friendly owners who switch off as waiter and chef. We walk in the door and they start making our drink order. We lived in New Mexico, and I'll admit that the food is a compromise on the "real" stuff, but most Portlanders probably would not take all that readily to the volcanic flavors of truly authentic fare from a non-chain New Mexico restaurant. It may not be quite the same stuff as Don Juan's Cocina in Socorro, NM, but their chili rellenos and carne adovada measure up well, and the sopapillas are fine. They make everything fresh in house except (to my knowledge) the tamales, which are good anyway. Minimal ambience, but at least they didn't do some fakey decor. Parking can be an issue, but we walk -- one of the joys of living in Sellwood.
Cravings – Moving to PDX from Colorado we were craving New Mexican style food. Although the Adobe Rose was cute and quaint, it wasn't up to par for our palettes.
The green chile was not hot and it didn't have any pork in it.
Their refried beans were very good though. They had an excellent flavor.
Sopapillas were good and free....
Service was really good.
We'll go back and try other dishes. I hope they add pork to their green chile.
Local charm – What we liked best about this place was the local charm and feel it had. Right in downtown Westmoreland nghd, with friendly staff and owners.
Food was good, I'd suggest try the specials to the freshest food.
Corn chowder was good. Great margaritas, the main dishes are hit and miss.
Plain interior, but very clean. One waiter for the whole place, don;t go if you ar ein a rush. Said waiter/owner does have an amazing memory for names/faces. Cool guy, my wife loves him.
Can't go wrong when a 4 year old walks in, says hi to the server by name and then states to him that she would like to have a good time tonight.
Very local feel. We'll like it.
great food, great service – have been to the adobe rose cafe and it is the best you will find closest to New Mexico.
The sauces are great and taste like they are made fresh everyday. The puff bread is wonderful and when ever I have been there I do not pay for them. The waiter handles the room very well even on Halloween when very busy. The natilla is very good for dessert and the torte also, made fresh and from scratch.
We will be back again soon!
Not quite authentic New Mexican..... – After many visits to New Mexico and craving the cuisine, we tried Adobe Rose hoping for the best. My husband's green chile burrito was authentic, but my Tex-Mex plate was not. The spicy red chile sauce should be avoided and you should stick with green chile for better flavor. I had read someone's earlier comment about microwaved food and, alas, could hear the 'ding!' of the microwave go off right before we were served our food. The salsa was flavorless and the chips were straight out of a bag. I couldn't wait to try the sopapillas! Unlike in New Mexico, where this is a standard part of the end of the meal, I had to ask for an order and then was charged for them (also unlike in New Mexico)! Novices may find this cafe appealing, but not for New Mexican veterans.
Great food from a nice, small cafe – After wanting to visit Adobe Rose for years, we finally made it for dinner, and it was as good as I hoped. We had chile rellenos in green sauce and pork avodobo as entrees. Both meals were accompanied by sides of rice, brothy beans (WAY better than the refried glop in most restaurants), and finished off with sopapillas and honey. The house margaritas were pretty pedestrian. But that was the only downside. Dinner and drinks for two came in at $38---a bit steep for a simple cafe, but the quality of the food make up for the extra bucks.
Great New Mexican Food – My first introduction to New Mexican food! The service has been fine when I've been there and I enjoy getting a pitcher of soda instead of needing to ask for refills. Good food and good prices.
mmm... – The enchiladas are very good! Overall it is good NM cuisine catered for OR. Love that green chili!! It's worth the travel and wait time for service.
been too long, need to go back.... – Having attended college in New Mexico, and acquiring a taste for "New Mexican" cuisine, I was pleasantly surprised to find this place eons ago. Haven't been back in awhile, and my favorite time to go is in September/October, when the chile's that they have shipped up from New Mexico are at their freshest, and hottest. Love the green chile enchiladas, chile rellenos, and of course the sopapillas. And the fact that you can get a fried egg on top of those enchies is the bomb. Service could be a little better, but they dont' hire much staff (about 3 people), so you have to be patient. It's worth it though, if you like some fire in your mouth. Bring it on!
