The huge portions, low prices, and proximity to Reed College explain the long lines (even in the rain), but the casual, neighborhood camaraderie of the joint brings people back.

Sometimes we do it because everyone else is, & that's Saburo's. The cafeteria dining & ginormous rolls are great, if you know what to expect

Very Hard To Beat!! – I was first introduced to Saburo’s when I was 14 and started taking Japanese in high school. Our sensei took us on a field trip to Saburo’s. I even remember the first thing I ever had, the yakitori.

17+ years later, I still frequent Saburo’s every chance I get, and most of the time I bring friend (or "new converts" as I like to call them). I find myself watching the newbies working on getting with the program, soon they’ll be able to order like regulars. Tony and the other staff are always polite, friendly, and accommodating—a lot of people are waiting to get in so things have to move quickly. Mr. Saburo (who can be found behind the counter most nights working with the other staff making the sushi) always seems to take a lot of pride when people complement their experience in his restaurant and thank him as they leave.

I have read many of the critics’ remarks, and I must say most people are way way off. Yes there are long waits--it’s a very popular joint! If you don’t like waiting, stop by, put your name on the list, go pick up the other members in your party, and be back in a half hour to an hour. Yes it’s a bit divey—but are you there for the food or are you there for the décor, cups, and plates? I have eaten a lot of sushi in my days and whenever I go out to other sushi restaurants I always find myself comparing their sushi to Saburo’s, and I honestly have never found any place around here that can compete with their food. I travel to Seattle frequently and I have searched high and low and nothing in the area can compete with Saburo’s food either. Same goes for Hawaii, I'm sad to say.

The fish is fresh, the sushi is creative, the prices are reasonable, and the portion sizes are great! Save what you don’t eat for a midnight snack, next days lunch, or otherwise—it will still be good then! My favorite is the salmon belly, the spicy tuna salad, and of course…the toro!

A couple of months ago while waiting to be seated, my girlfriend and I met some folks from LA that were very well to do and were very skeptical that Saburo's could match their LA sushi house quality, but decided to come anyway. The end result, the gentleman had one enthusiatic word, “Primo!”. I couldn’t have agreed more. See you there!!

Excellent Sushi, Great Service, Worth the Wait! – I would go here a few times a week if I could! Very good quality, down to earth staff, and huge portions of mouth watering sushi.

Worth the wait! Although it would be 5 star without it.

Never Again! Terrible! Awful! – This place has lost their mind. I've been MANY times and last time I went will be the very last EVER.

1st - Waited for about an hour to get seated

2nd - Could get a refill on my soda

3rd - The creamy scallops tasted off. When I told them they advised the "the quality is good and they will not take it off my bill".

Who does that? It was definitely off and yet they wouldn't take it off my bill. There are much better options in PDX for sushi than this ego bloated sushi shop.

DONT GO ! ! !

Lowest Quality of Sushi Ever! – We were a table of five on a Friday night. We ordered a bunch of nigris and sushi rolls. First, we were seated in the back room which was in the same spot as the restroom so it smelled like bad bathroom odors. Then, we were served by a bunch of people who kept rushing us to order food and served us water in dirty, cracked platic cups. Once we received the sushi we ordered, we were thoroughly disgusted. It had to be the lowest of the lowest quality of sushi I have ever tasted. There was wayyy too much rice than one needed. The rolls were the width of my wrist. Some people enjoy the fact that they can get large amounts of sushi for really cheap, but this place is scam. They don't even give you sushi grade sashimi. This is like the Costco of sushi....it's exciting to see the quantity for the price, but the quality is subpar!

Awesome Sushi – I frequent sushi restaurants often and I always leave Suburo's having had a great experience. Sushi is always good and there is a lot to choose from on the menu.

Big food for my big appetite – I love to go eat sushi here but I just wish it was bigger. I really have to plan my night to go there because you might wait for awhile but it is worth it.

Monster Portions – My GF and I have gone twice now to Saburo's. We do like this place because the food is tasty, it's very affordable, and the portions are enormous. The 1 hour wait isn't even that bad if you're up for putting your name on the list and grabbing a drink at the Lompoc while you wait.

But, we went slightly hungry the last time, which was a mistake. We didn't feel like drinking before hand, we just wanted to eat. So we waited for an hour. Then we sat down. Our order was taken 15 minutes later. Our food arrived 30 minutes after that. So it was almost 2 hours from the time we arrived to the time we ate. Keep that in mind.

That being said.. this place is a lot of fun. Just make sure you have time to spend.

Quality & Quantity – I love this place. I split 50/50 with my date cause I'm cheap. I never spend over $12 and leave full. The quality is fantastic. The wait is worth it! My only complaint is the Inari is too sweet. There salad is amazing!
