Good food, a little spendy.
I love that they make their own Tarter sauce, cocktail sauce and the blue cheese dressing for their salads is to die for! I usually end up getting one of their baskets, because I find their dinners to be a little pricey, considering they are not a high-end restaurant. The decor is lacking and it is not a place for a romantic night out. You also don't get a lot of food for the price. However, quality is more important to me then quantity. That's why I have been going there (or more like ordering take out) ever since they opened up (over 20 years). If you love oysters, you'll have to try their sauteed and grilled oysters! Delish!
Just keep doing everything like you have been doing for years. Love you all, best fish in town and the chowder is to die for! Always the best of service, everyone is very friendly and hardworking. Those who can complain about such a wonderful place have nothing better to do. You guys consistantly shine as a AAA establishment!
Best clam chowder in the city. Super nice people who cook a mean fish. :)
Try "Old School" menu with a 21st Century Touch – Here is a most comfortable, casual ,familiar place for lunch
or dinner where the food is TOP NOTCH!
Lots of familiar menu standbys, but many selections that
show that the kitchen is talented and modern too.
We tried the great Tuesday night wine specials and had the special salmon...and one of my all time favorites-Deep Fried
Scallops and Fries. Also- Clam Chowder-the best you can find.
Prices let a person come often. Very reasonable. Bring your out of town visitors for a wonderful PDX time. The
owner is young, knowledgeable and very warm. She's
carrying on the family success- a real neighborhood gem. It's close to U of Portland, so go there before a basketball game.
Yay 6-1-11 – So we live very close to the Fishwife and I've wanted to try their food for a long time and I'm so glad that I did. I ordered the clamstrip basket with a side order of fried shrimp to go. It was so good. Prices are a little high but so is all seafood so I can't complain $18.00 bucks isn't so bad for some good grub.
Awesome dining experience! – Chef Matt is exceptional! The best seafood menu in town. I had fresh Grilled Columbia Salmon. Large portion and very tender. Delicious. Also tried my friends' Blue Cheese Halibut- it is to die for!! I can't wait to go back. Very comparable prices. Excellent service and atmosphere. The place was buzzing the whole time! Thanks Fishwife. we'll be seeing you again!
Very good! – Low key. Relaxed atmosphere. Great food (it's fish & chips but there are some bad ones out there) & service.
The Best Service Ever! – The Fishwife is my favorite restaurant. Its family owned & operated, great food & service, cheaper fresher fish & chips than any seafood spot in the city, everything is homemade & as sustainable as possible. I went there just last week & decided it was my time to give the Fishwife staff the praise they deserve for all their dedication & service over the years. I was super dismayed however when i came this site & read the ignorant reviews posted last about my fave spot! To the silly people who were unhappy with their togo order & their "bad service" by the chef: First, dont get grilled fish togo. It is not a good idea. Second; dont harrass a chef/ manager when they are super busy in the middle of cooking a dinner rush. They are coordinating MY food, flustered & stressed. Call the next day or towards the end of the nite and ask to speak with the manager. Thirdly, Halibut is a dry fish that is not in season right now; thus rendering it dryer than the fresh. I apologize if i seem emotional but this place is FREAKIN AWSOME. I have been eating there for years; grown to know the staff including the "rude female manager" who works both front & back of the house, has always provided me & my friends with thoughtful service, makes all the desserts at Fishwife & has been locally & nationally recongized for her accomplishments. (She was featured in this months issue of Mix magazine & appeared on an episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations) So go to The Fishwife. Get the oysters. get the chowder. Try the specials, theyre always amazing. Dont order grilled halibut togo (unless u already know u like it & ur normal). And dont angrily approach busy chefs who apparently have been busy enough that nite to run out of grilled halibut. CHEERS!
bad customer service from chef 2/18 – so we live very close to the Fishwife and decided to call in an order for carry out. The halibut Parmesan is very good and we have had it before. So i called it in and they said 30 to 40 minute wait. so when Ezekiel brought the food home the halibut was like a dry chicken breast. Awful. He took it back and they said it doesn't travel well, we live maybe 2 minutes away and have had it a few times in the past, even taken leftovers home that reheated fine the next day and didn't dry out like what we had. Anyway So they say they will recook us some halibut, they at 7:30pm they are all the sudden out of halibut fillets, seriously? so they offered fried halibut, did i want anymore fried food? not really but we settled for it. when they bagged up the food Ezekiel nicely asked if they give you an equal amount money wise because fried halibut might be cheaper then halibut Parmesan. The chef that made our food must have been the manager because she said, THE PRICE DIFFERENCE DOESN’T BOTHER HER!!! so Ezekiel said IT BOTHERS ME I AM THE ONE PAYING FOR IT so then the lady opened the til and slapped a 20 on the counter and said DOES THAT WORK FOR YOU? Ezekiel just grabbed everything and left and was shocked at such horrible customer service.
Just a note, when he brought the food home they added a piece of cheescake and cobbler and we were satisfied with the fried halibut it was very good. Now if the chef would have had been polite to show Ezekiel the fried halibut and how much was there and informed him they threw in a couple desserts then there would have been no problems and he would have been a satisfied customer. Very rude customer service from the chef. It is so hard to find good customer service these days. its sad because i like that little Restaurant. i know if that chef is working we wont go there, we will turn around and leave.
Plastic Foreign Objects in the Chowder – I have been a customer of the Fishwife for many years. Last week I went in and ordered dinner for my wife and myself to take home after a long day. We ordered the Scallop Fetticini, salad and 2 cups of clam chowder to go. Total bill $55 with tip. We had dinner about 9pm so I put the chowder and took it from the "to go" cup into a regular household bowl into the microwave to heat it up. We started to eat the chowder and on the 2nd or 3rd bite I bit into a lovely 2" by 3" piece of hard plastic that apparantly some idiot in the kitchen didnt see before they poured the chowder into the bowls. Talk about a buzz kill when you are really ready for a great dinner. Really puts that on hold dosent it? So ok its late Im wondering what might be in the main course now so instead we tossed it so as to not hopefully find any other foreign objects.I go back 2 days later to be told to call the owner.I show the manager the piece of plastic with chowder still on it. I do so and long story short she offered me 1 bowl of the plastic chowder, to in her mind "make things right". Really?????? I would think a $50 gift card that we could use for a return visit just to say, Sorry we made a mistake we are sorry that your dinner had plastic in it. Please come back because your business is important to us. Nope none of that. Just old school arrogance and crappy customer service.
Never again, if I could give zero stars I would.
