You will be disappointed. – This is a little hole in the wall place on Broadway. My wife and I were looking for some American fare after shopping and found this place open on Sunday. Our first clue should have been the "greeter" that had his stuff spread all over the first booth when you walk in. He was pleasant enough and guided us to one of the empty oversized tufted booths that were in a very small and dimly lit space.
The booth opposite us had a big rip in one of the seats. I had to go to the men's restroom and was guided to the second floor via an outside elevator. The restroom was spotless, but it wasn't part of the restaurant.
My wife ordered a veggie burger that came with fries, and a diet coke. I had a regular cheesburger with fries and a diet coke. The service was good and the food hot, but the food was just so-so. The burger was greasy and pretty thin. We got our check and were both astounded that this crappy little lunch had cost us $9.25/each before tip.
We would recommend avoiding this place at all costs. You can actually do better at any of the fast food burger joints in town.
I love the fries! – This place does a great burger and fries...the burger is tasty and fresh and the fries are crisp but not greasy. The prices are great and the owners are very friendly!
Drop in and give them a try! – This is a great place if you are looking for an old-fashioned burger, fries and a shake. I usually order the Carl's special. The staff is friendly and has a lot of character. They take credit cards now, they did not used to. My favorite burger joint downtown. Certainly beats mall food, Definitely worth trying!
Best Hambergers – I read some of the reviews, and the ones that said it had bad service are crazy. They must be real creaps. This place is wonderful. The atmosphere is nice, the service is great and the food is good. I met someone for lunch there and was dieting, but I am a regular customer. I took my Subway sandwich in with me, and they even gave me a plate for my sandwich. Now that is really good service. It's a mom and pop shop. The owners are great. The waitress actually owns the place, and she remembers my name when I go in and what my usual order is. They have the best chili burgers. The price is ok too.
I love this place.
Not worth the hype – Bad food, bad service, great shake ... worth the money??
After reading the initial reviews, I was willing to overlook the bad customer service in hopes of a great burger meal. I call and place my order for pick up which is ready for me in ten minutes. I walk across the street, go in and have to yell (may be a slight exaggeration) in order for the "host" to hear me. Then I have to leave and walk down to an ATM due to them not accepting debit or even having an ATM of their own. Ok, I return, purchase my $10.50 meal just KNOWING that this is going to be a good burger ... I was wrong. The meat is pre-formed and most likely frozen, the lettuce is lower grade than ever expected, the fries are "well done" to a brown color. The only taste I would compliment is the shake which I suppose you could say I spent $10.50 on. Booooooooooooooooo.
How did I never hear of this place in 30 years downtown? – This is an amazing restaurant just for the novelty of it. The owner's must have a crazy sense of humor of the satirical absurd. This is the absolutely most perfect pseudo-diner I have ever been in, with its deep-seated, red vinyl booths and open kitchen grill.
The menu is cheap and simple. Hamburgers. You can get variations that include a nice, square patty of American cheese, staple chili, iceburg lettuce, or perfectly sliced tomatoes. The buns are perfectly tanned light texture white bread.
The flavor is better than McD, but not as good as Burgerville. Either of those restaurants has about 2 times the menu to choose from.
The milk shakes are made with real ice cream and milk, and not with anything fancy, just plain wrapper ice cream.
It appears this is a very popular place. I can't complain about it, but can't quite figure out why I would ever go there again.
I feel like Norm! – I worked downtown and would go in once every couple of weeks, but now I meet an old coworker for lunch there about once a month. The hours are a bit short and have prevented us from dinning more, but they have unlocked the door for us when we arrived late. Even though we now only eat there once a month they still remember our orders and call them out to the cook as soon as we are seated. They are very friendly and treat us and other guests with some of the best service I have seen! I don't think my glass has ever been allowed to be less than half full. Two Karl's Special (cheeseburger with fries) and a Cherry Coke or Milkshake is a bit more food than I or anyone should eat, but the burger is good enough to justify a huge lunch and skipping dinner!
Not kid friendly at all – Do not bring your kids to this restaurant. The host yelled at my grandaughter. The waitness rolled her eyes at my grandson for asking for "apple juice." This is the most unfriendly restaurant I've ever visited. Fine if you're a white suit, but for anyone else, don't bother. Also, at the end of the meal, they give you several tickets - not just one with all charges. You can't read the writing so you have no idea if they charged correctly.
Best Hamburger in Town – The Red Coach is a classic Portland hamburger hamlet. Family run, reasonably priced, great service. The cheeseburger deluxe (with bacon and cheddar cheese) and milk shake is tops in Portland.
Burgers and Fries and Shakes, Oh My! – The Cheeseburgers here are SO GOOD! The fries taste homemade, and are a nice compliment. Save room for one of their milkshakes....they are easily the reason this place has been in business for 44 years. I also love how quiet it feels, even though you're in the heart of downtown. Great ambience!
