So much to LOVE! Terrific pastries and spectacular bread. The inviting dining room is a swell place to hang out, too.
This Portland bakery institution has launched a new bean-to-bon-bon chocolate line in addition to their stellar loaves and super cookies (like Valhrona white chocolate or old-school chocolate chunk).
Oh the tough decisions we have to make in life—do you get this pretty little Euro-style bakery’s candied orange peel-studded gibassier, the raspberry jam-veined dark chocolate brownie, the fig anise panini? Yes, yes, and yes (I’m not really big on making tough decisions), and also get yourself one of the picture perfect croissants—they’re a delectable start to the day.
We were in Portland for the weekend and decided to run amok trying tastes of everything we could manage in the Pearl. Which brought us to Pearl Bakery, woo hoo!
The breads we tried were good but nothing stellar, although the sourdough had a nice twist in that it was made from wheat and you could see the wheat flecks in the bread.
Onward to the croissant! Oooooooooooh. I think I just melted into the buttery goodness of this crescent of golden, flaky goodness. Can I have another? Can I just stop, rewind and go back to when I pulled apart the croissant on the first round and inhaled the amazing scent of heaven? Oh boy. Oh wow. I'm ruined for other croissants now.
Something new to try, a chibassier. I must get the recipe for this one. Anise seed, citrus, sugary but not overly so, it was wonderful. Moist, yet sturdy, I can see this one being used for both savory (melty prosciutto and brie sammie) and sweet (lavender ice cream on top of a slice) applications.
Finally, what's a tasting without chocolate? A bouchant. Rough translation: amazingly dense brownie in a small, deep muffin pan. Very good, and a little goes a long way.
This will be a regular stop whenever we're in Portland!
Worst Customer Service – First place I visited when I got to Portland to grab a quick and cheap lunch. I stood there for the longest time trying to get someone's attention to place an order. The girls behind the counter seemed very rude and acted aloof. Finally the guy behind the counter decided to help me. I've rarely experienced this kind of bad service before!
Citysearch Editorial Review – Just a block from the perennially popular Powell’s City of Books, this cozy corner bakery has an equally impressive cult following; only in place of bookworms, it attracts bread-obsessed locals and famished office workers. The casual, open-floor plan encourages grab-and-go dining rather than eat-ins, though a handful of two-tops are available for those who like to linger with a latte and apple almond bear claw. Pretty pastries and loafs lure guests to the front counter, where they place orders for chocolate croissants and, at lunch, black forest ham sandwiches. By afternoon, the orders shift toward mood-lifting chocolate chunk cookies and artisan loafs to serve as a standout breadbasket loaf back home.
Nobody makes gibassiers like these guys. – Everything about this place is amazing. The chewy, savory olive bread, the best ham and gruyere croissants in town, pillow soft petite brioche and truly great coffee....and it isn't Stumptown!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? They have complimentary parking across the street and great people watching. They also have delicious (cheap) sandwiches and they've recently added fresh, hot soup. All those old one star reviewers can go back to their Krispy Kremes and Folgers crystals...
Best PB & J ever! – I'm not sure what others are complaining about- Pearl Bakery has fast and friendly service. Get your sandwich or pastry to go- not wrapped in plastic, but in nice white paper. Their pastries are average, but their sandwiches are sublime. Particularly the peanut butter and jelly sandwich on paesano bread. Not sure if it's the bread, or the fact that they spread the perfect amount of jelly and peanut butter, but the sandwich is so good. MMmmm...
Bad Service is right! – The pastries are average the bread is good. The service is horrible it took 20 minutes for a latte and my PLASTIC WRAPPED sandwich - did I say plastic wrapped how is that gourmet. I know Portland has this whole cool crowd moving in but give me a break! I go to Three Lions now down on Nw 5th and Davis. Better pastries and better service - they atleast try there. Sorry Pearl but give me an eye roll because I ask for my latte twice!
New to Portland; other bakeries just as good are closer to home – Good bread and pasteries, but nothing exceptional. Petite Provence is a lot closer to my home, and even better
Good bread and pastries, bad service. – We have been to the Pearl Bakery quite a lot since we moved here a year ago. The pastries are delicious, as is the bread, but the employees are obviously not interested in serving customers. The attitude is just short of an eye roll. It's like you are putting them out by asking them to serve you a pastry. God forbid you should order an espresso drink.
Fantastic Croissants and Coffee...Horrible Service – This place has amazing pastries. The coffee is well done as well. However, the service is cranky and slow. It literally takes 25-30 minutes to get a pastry and a latte to go. I've gone back a couple times just hoping that the service would get better, but its consistantly poor. If you have a job to get back to, I recommend getting brewed coffee vs. espresso drinks!
A dangerously delectable bakery, known for its artisanal loaves and sweets. – In Short
Bakery cases filled with goodies take center stage in this local darling. The wide-open, tiled foyer is more inclined to pick-ups, rather than eat-ins, although fancy footwork can gain you one of the few, prized café tables. Crispy, rich loaves like olive ciabatta are surefire crowd pleasers, as are warm chocolate croissants and moist, heavenly chocolate chiffon cake. The smoked turkey breast sandwich with Muenster cheese, creamy Dijon and roasted red peppers is a lunch standout.
