Find no-fuss weeknight home picnic necessities at this picture-perfect neighborhood market—fresh oysters, a killer cheese and charcuterie case, baguettes, olives, ripe organic fruit, imported chocolate bars, Two Tarts' cookies, and plenty of great Italian wine.

Gourmet cheese and meat selection. Homemade pastas just waiting for you to cook and top with a sauce of your choice. Fragrant flowers, wine tastings and friendly service. Prices are more but the quality is superb.

one of my favorite places in pdx – as a transplanted new yorker, i arrived in portland searching for tastes of home. it was 6 months before somebody pointed me in the direction of city market, and i've been a convert every since. the cheeses and salami make me so happy, and the butcher counter (which changed names from viande to chop, but didn't seem to change anything else) is just delightful. and the butcher is knowledgable and helpful. sadly, i cannot afford to shop here all the time, but i've never had anything that was less than excellent, and i will continue to send folks to this gem.

Worst customer service – Wish I could give these guys ZERO stars. Having just arrived in Portland and checked into hotel nearby, we walked into this (admittedly) attractive store to grab something to take back for dinner. It was 6:55 pm, and the clerk at the register turned us away, because they were closing. (The posted closing time was 7:00.) When we asked if there was any other grocery store nearby, she directed us to Fred Meyer on Burnside (we had no idea where exactly that was.) Since we weren’t dressed or in the mood for a restaurant experience, we grabbed some take-out from a nearby place and headed back to the hotel. Imagine our dismay, when the next day we found a Trader Joe’s (open to 9 pm, by the way) around the block from City Market NW. That the clerk didn’t tell us about that straight away was not only rude, but indicative of an overriding disdainful attitude towards customers. Shame on them.

Impressive joint – Needed a few cheeses and heard good things, man people were right, nobody can compare to their cheeses and decently knowledgeable staff behind the counter. The fish guys were real great and helped me find some good smoked fish. This produce quality can't be beat out of farmers market! Wine staff and short cheese guy need to get their egos in check a touch but were able to help out when needed. I loved the olives too sure this place overcharges but man they have some of the best stuff in town.

Find it here! – On a quest for back bacon (the canadian version of canadian bacon), I had hit dead ends in Portland until I was directed to City Market. Not only did they make their own back bacon (called Scottish bacon), but they also make their own Canadian bacon. Paula (meat) made sure I found (and tasted) what I was looking for and offered unpretentious answers to all of my questions. There was quick parking available across the street (Sunday, 10:30 am), and no waiting at the meat counter nor the checkout line. No more running to Vancouver, BC, for my bacon!

You Get What You Pay For! – The meat , fish and cheese and produce departments of this market all have the best of the best of what is available in Portland. The service is ALWAYS wonderful, the employees helpful and always willing to go a little extra distance to help. I have shopped there for years and drive from Vancouver daily to choose my food and wine.

My experience with Olive Oil and the knowledge of the help has been very positive.

{Olive oil is often bitter by the way] Maybe the person who complained should take an olive oil class or something? Anyway ...it does not get better! My Friend!!!!!Let's Have A Drink! That crazy Chris and Olivia. We love you all!

Substandard Customer Service – I was also treated poorly when I attempted to return an item that had gone bad. Word of warning...If you prefer to do business with an establishment that stands behind the products they offer for sale, don't do business here!

Customer Service is Not Number 1!!! – I recently purchased some imported olive oil at City Market NW. Unfortunately, when I opened the oil, I discovered that it was well past its prime. I tried to return the bottle, however, the associate I dealt with told me she thought it tasted 'fine.' I tried to explain to her that olive oil should not taste bitter and further tried to explain the qualities of a good olive oil and even offered to show her some websites that explain at length, what olive oils should look and taste like. She vehemently disagreed about the rancidy of the oil. I then asked her about customer satisfaction, and she rudely told me, in front of my young daughter, that I was wrong and she would do nothing to offer any satisfaction. I left the olive oil, and vow that I will no longer be patronizing City Market NW.

NOTHING FISHY HERE!!! – I have searched high and low for a good fish market and City Market has it tucked inside the fabulous food market! The fish market person I dealt with gave me exemplary service, and the attitude was amazingly unpretentious, But the best of the fish market is the top-of-the line and extremely fresh seafood. A little secret: specials that aren't in the case will appear from the back if you know what to ask for! I'll be back again and again!
