Thursday, Friday, Saturday Night, it is the place to be. – Every weekend at night time, the place is packed with people in their twenties and early thirties. If you are looking to go out and get some drinks at a classic NW 21st bar, look not further. I come here all the time and always run into a few friends. There are three pool tables and a lot of outside seating. On a great day, the people watching is second to none. The front walls slide back to open onto the street. The majority of the reviews on here angry because they had to wait for food when the place was slammed on a Satuday. Be realistic, it takes time if the place is busy. On the other hand, iif the place is packed, there must be some reason why all of these people are going there. I know that I will go back for countless more times. It makes me wonder if these people giving the reviews are even from Portland.
One of the McMenamins' most popular pubs, complete with fireplace, pool table, jukebox and people-watching. – In Short
Crowds swarm the place nearly every night to play pool and mingle while listening to alternative, blues and reggae tunes from the jukebox. In cooler weather, people gather around the fire pit. In warmer weather, windows swing open on Glisan and 21st; customers battle for the coveted sidewalk tables, which provide an ideal spot for consuming pub grub, drinking pints of brew, and watching trendsetters strut down 21st Avenue.
Awful Service – My girlfriend and I stopped in for a beer on a Friday afternoon. We were greeted at the door and told to seat ourselves. After waiting to be served for about 15 minutes, we left. The place was not crowded and there seemed to be plenty of servers casually milling about, but none could be bothered to acknowledge us. First time I have had a bad experience at a McMenamins' joint, but it's unlikely I'll ever visit Blue Moon again.
Horrible, awful, terrible – We were there for a late lunch about 3 p.m. on a Saturday. There were several occupied tables, but not terribly busy. The service was just awful. Good thing we ordered an appetizer to tide us over, because the meals came much later. I ordered fish and chips -- the fish was extremely dried out, so at least I know it wasn't undercooked. Both orders of fries were burnt and cold. We told our waiter and he said, "No problem." Um, yeah, it is a problem. About a half-hour later, he brought us one order of lukewarm fries. Then we waited for our bill. And waited. And waited. I would never recommend this place to anyone.
Crabby waitresses – We had a nice time playing pool and turkey sandwitches for dinner. However, our waitstaff consisted of more than one person, was very slow and tried to close out our tab early. The waitress requested I just talk to the bartender because she was "tired" of waiting on us.
DECENT FOOD – My girlfriend and I stopped by here for a few drinks and a small appetizer and thought their salsa and guacamole dish was great. It came with tortilla chips that are minimally flavored and McMenamin beer is always good. It is a good place to kill some time if you're in the area.
Terrible service for OK food – This place truly has the WORST service of any dining establishment in the city. I live 1 block away and thought it would be a nice place to frequent. Boy, was I wrong.
The wait-staff are rude, impossible to flag down, and one's food and drink come in idiotic sequence.
Avoid this place at all costs.
Simply Not Worth It – The service at any McMenamins is generally poor, but the Blue Moon takes bad service to a whole new level. I live in the neighborhood and like their beer, but quit going because of consistently bad service. I've never had less then an hour wait for food, and usually have about a half hour wait for beer, and at least a fifteen minute wait for a server to take my initial drink order. Note these waits are NOT dependent on how full the restaurant is--the waits are long even if the restaurant is only a quarter full. My pinnacle bad service experience was when a waitress didn't know what the seasonal beer on tap was, and point blank refused to go find. Now I walk a few extra blocks to either Rogue or New Old Lompoc.
Tasty Beer Tasty Food – Hey, I don't know what the other people are thinking but this place rocks! Drinking local brews by the fire!? Fine by me. They have a sampler of all of six beers which was a treat. Try the terminator stout. Mmmm. Food is a bit greasy but good nonethless.
What a disaster! – Worst service anywhere, ever. The waitress didn't know what the soup of the day was because she didn't like mushrooms and it had mushrooms in it, whatever it was. Drank 2 pitchers of beer while we waited almost 1 and a half hours for burgers and fries. Waitress stopped by twice to let us know that our food would be there "in 5 minutes". Half an hour later, we finally flagged her down to ask what was going on, and she looked at us like she'd never seen us before. She said, "yeah, it's confusing in here, isn't it?" We left without eating, missed meeting our friends for plans we had later inthe evening, and ended up getting a pizza across the street. Grr.
