You'd be hard pressed to find a prettier, more peaceful patio than this one, right along NW 23rd, although you'd hardly know it thanks to the hedge. Great red curry!

Excellent Food and Prompt, Friendly Service – This long standing restaurant doesn't disappoint. I've been here many times over about 12 years each time has been great. The Vietnamese spring rolls were outrageously good and the owner even taught us how to eat them properly.

The pad thai was excellent, and the coconut ice cream was a near religious experience. If you are around NW 23rd Ave a stop here will not disappoint!

surprisingly bad food and service – We were charmed by the location and wonderful patio dining. The bejewelled owner (assumed) helped our teenager decide on chicken kabobs. They were overcooked, tough, jerky-like pressed meat. Awful. To the point of poisoned. I politely notified her of the "mishap" thinking she would offer another dish or remove from the bill. Boy was I mistaken. She stood by the kabobs, tasted it from our dish and stated that is how they are supposed to be. So much for pleasing the customer!

WOW - Great Food, Great Outdoor Seating, Great Service, Great Price – Had to do a dine and dash on my way to the airport on a Sunday evening and this was perfect. The food was great (Love the yellow Curry). The location is easy, the outdoor dinning is charming, the service was quick and solid and the Rice came in a pretty pueter serving dish. Love this place!

Exellent food and service in a family-run business – Despite this listing, Tara Thai Northwest specializes in Lao food as well.

I was introduced to the restaurant by my Lao friend who wanted to celebrate with a traditional Lao celebration dish. The food was excellent, plentiful, and nicely presented. Each time I have dined there it has been this way, whether I am with my Lao friend or not. The service is easy-going setting a tone that it is okay to linger, watch people, and enjoy our dinner companions and the location. Finally, it is a preference of mine to shop/dine, when possible, at family owned and operated businesses. I like to support them, and my experience is that there is a pride and commitment that a "managed" business seldom has. In the age of "chains" and "franchises" I find this all the more important.

For me, Tara Thai Northwest is a winner top to bottom. Don't miss it.

Knock your socks off meals! – Every person that visits us in the non-rainy months gets a meal at Tara Thai. The food is exemplary, the service is top notch and the outdoor dining under the giant tree is what outdoor dining is supposed to be. We have become true Thai / Laotian lovers since our first visit two years ago and will always use Tara Thai as our reference point. Try the Larb, one of our favorites for a spicy chicken treat.

Unassuming Thai and Laotian cuisine gets a boost from a prime location. – In Short
The large wraparound porch--nestled under an oak tree and candlelit in the evenings--offers great patio dining environs and people-watching to boot. For starters, there is the ban seo, a coconut crepe with bean sprouts and stir-fried chicken, tofu or prawns, served with crisp iceberg lettuce. The Evil Jungle Prince is a potent red curry dish, and the pad thai is delicious with extra peanut sauce.

Just okay – Went for lunch today with coworkers and ordered Pad Ga Prau - a dish I've enjoyed at many other Thai places around Portland. This one was the worst version I've ever had - the chicken was on the rubbery side, the sauce lacked flavor, and the brown rice (which I paid $1 extra for) was mushy and sticky. Plus, the portion was quite small for an $8.50 lunch. The thing is, my husband and I went here for dinner several years ago and never went back because we felt the food was only average-tasting and not a good value - I was open to giving them a chance but I see things haven't changed.

it's a shame this place isn't better – it's got such a beatiful tree on the patio... i've really tried to like this place because it's near my house and i love the tree. but it's just bad. the prices are slightly higher than other thai places and the food is below average. i ordered pad thai once that was almost $10 and was a bunch of dry noodles stuck together. everything i've had there has been bland.

so-so everything – Tara Thai is merely okay on almost all counts. For Thai and Lao cuisine, their food is surprisingly timid. Dishes that should have bold, booming flavor -- like pad ga prow, pad kee mao, curries, etc. -- taste okay, but certainly don't have the complexity, depth or pizzazz that I expect.

Service was fine, the location is nice (a converted victorian) and the prices seem fair, but with so many great Thai places in town to choose from, why go to Tara Thai?

Excellent Food & Service – This is a 'down-to-earth' family run Thai/Laos Restuarant. Our kids love the sticky rice & egg. The food is excellent. Great service! Great staff!
