Decadent, rich, beautiful desserts abound here. A sweet spot along NW 23rd to enjoy coffee and dessert.
Best Cassata Cake Ever! – Definitely worth a visit to any of their locations.
I had reservations but.... – After I read the reviews I did not want to come here but after my sister and friend convinced me, I'm glad we came. We had a long wait but it was totally worth it. The service to me was perfect. Sam, our server always had our water glass filled and paid attention to ourevery need. For dessert he recommended the strawberry pistachio tart, which I had. It had fresh strawberries which is unusual in many restaurants. I highly suspect that they have many desserts that feature fresh fruits over the course of their seasons. My sister had a lemon dessert. She is crazy about lemon desserts and she just about passed out, it was that good. I think the complaint of many people not liking the closeness, noisiness and the wait times better not ever go to Paris. It is the same there which is all the more reason why I loved Papa Haydens!!
still disappointed – What can I say? I live over near the SE location and yet again I was disappointed by the lmited menu and service. It had been a year since we had tried Pap Haydyn (last time I was there I found a black pubic-like hair at the bottem of my ceaser salad). The waitstaff comped me a free dessert-how generous. I was to disgusted to eat it! Last night, we left before we ordered. We sat down and had to wait some time before anyone came over. We let the server know we were still deciding . . . well after 15 min she never came back! I am done with this restaurant-it's dead to me!
Delicious Desserts! – I have visited Papa Haydn many times for dessert and continue to be blown away. Yes, you will need to wait for a table, but you can always pop over to McMenamins for a drink while you wait. I swear some of the sweets are inspirationed by Alice in Wonderland!
Decent food, but NOT worth the wait or crowd – When we arrived at Papa Haydn's there were exactly two couples in front of us in line. We figured, "well, we're here, so let's wait."
An HOUR later we were finally seated... directly next to a couple who were on what looked like a first date. We were practically seated on their laps. Talk about awkward.
While the food is decent, it is certainly not worth enduring the crowded atmosphere. It was like eating in a hall closet with thirty strangers.
We will not be going back. And given their prices, we suggest you go elsewhere, too.
What's everybody raving about – Finally had a chance to check out this supposed Portland institution for fine eating and DESERTS. I really don't get Papa Haydn.
Menu: limited food selection, somewhat pricey, and food just ok (at best). Then I was told, this really the place to go for desert - Ah...
My mouth started to water as I saw the options that were displayed. I was even more inspired (and later confused) when I was handed the full desert menu -how in the world do you choose. The waitress recommended five options and since there were four of us, we decided to try all five (you do the math)
Three of us, including yours truly, are desertaholics. None of us enjoyed any of the 5 options that were recommended - they were dry and flavored one-dimensionally - The waitress was kind enough to offer a few other options and replaced three of the five at no charge. Well, the other three were equally average. Frankly, I've had better tasing cakes at Albertsons - And I can get the whole cake for the price of two Papa Haydn slices. For a place that stakes its reputation on deserts, Papa Haydn needs to do a lot better.
Best wedding cake! – We loved our wedding cake! It tasted delicious and everyone complimented on it.
We can't wait until our 1 year anniversary for our free one! :)
Owner is rude, crazy? – I called the owner to tell him about a bad experience at his restaurant. I was extremely polite. His response was so unbelievably rude, and unprofessional, its hard to fathom that he's actually a business owner. During our very brief conversation, he inturrupted me twice, and ended the call by saying, "We don't need your business." Then he hung up. I felt like a practical joke victim. I've never seen a situation handled so poorly in my life.
Trendy 23rd restaurant is a longstanding dessert mecca. – Gaggles of teenage girls, prom entourages and couples out for a romantic date cluster under the recognizable striped awning at this corner restaurant while waiting for a coveted table. The menu in the white tableclothed dining room stars pedigreed European cuisine from French onion soup to panzanella to an aromatic clam, pancetta and herb linguine. But what the clientele is most interested in are the luscious sweets sitting in the front-of-the-house dessert case. From luscious, multi-layered cakes to chocolate indulgences and fresh berry tarts topped with tall flourishes of frosting, there isn’t a slice that won’t tempt a sweet tooth to make room for dessert.
