Great German Food – This place is great, the atmosphere, the food, everything. The mashed potatoes are great. The fondue is great. I can't say enough good things.
Great fondue and sausages! – This place is as German as you can get. We enjoy the schnitzel and sausages but the fondue was out of this world!
Singing servers, big steins of beer and fabulous fondue make this a bustling bit o' Bavaria. – In Short
Authentic German food in an equally authentic setting, singing servers and strolling musicians add to the festive atmosphere that draws families, couples and groups of friends. Menu offerings range from fondue to sauerbraten, from hasenpfeffer to schnitzel. Diners a budget get there early for early-bird specials. The adjacent Gustav's has a cheaper menu, sans the singing. Lots of beers, a decent wine list and a full bar round out the beverage choices.
This place was such a suprise! Me and my girlfriend went there thinking it was going to be romantic and we expected to have a nice meal. But instead of getting full on the meal we got our fill of accordians...
shame on Portland City Search – First let me say that Portland City Search should be ashamed for listing this as a recommeded "romantic" spot for couples. That in of itself set my expectations for something that the Rheinlander is NOT! I would better describe the atmosphere as family style, upscale Elmers or Marie Calendars. So if you are looking for a romatic restaurant this is not the place.
Never the less, my husband and I decided the menu looked promising so we decided to stay. Huge mistake! My dish was so over cooked (after waiting and waiting and waiting) that I had to send it back.
Bottom line, 1) for the price of the food it should be well prepared- I can't believe the waiter even brought my dish to the table. 2) Great for a soccer team gathering, NOT a romantic date.
Had a great time! – The Rheinlander was so fun last night! I took my wife there for our 13th anniversary. She had never been there, and I hadn't been there since a German class field trip about 19 years ago. My wife wasn't too excited about it, which made me nervous, but I remembered it being a neat place, so we went anyway. As soon as we walked it, she started to change her mind. It has a cute decor, and we got a nice little quiet table in a corner. I could have stuffed myself on the complimentary fondue they bring as an appetizer. It was also cool to be able to try the beer/wine samplers. The food was fantastic, and the singing was great. The service was outstanding, and I gave the guy one of the biggest tips I've ever given. My wife and I will definitely go there again sometime.
Great family atmosphere. – My favorite place in Portland. I've been there at least a half dozen times and have never failed to have a great time. It's an absolutely fun and positive atmosphere where you can't help but have fun. Even if you don't like to sing, it's really nice to see such vibrancy.
Super! – Simply great German food. I've been there plenty of times and each time the food and service has been great. The environment is also great with the real German feel.
Zhousu – I've been to Reinlanders at least 8 times, in the past 30 years, and have never had a bad experience. I just wish I lived closer, as I would visit there, much more often. The Sunday brunches are super. The waite staff have to audition for their jobs. They have to have very good voices, and sing in German, as well. The meals are delicious, with a large selection, to choose from. There is nothing bad about this place, except, the parking could be better.
The most important thing, I almost forgot, is their "Cheese Fondue", is out of this World.
Good Expensive Fun! – I just went here for my 21st birthday and the staff was really nice. The drinks were good, but the lemon drop was not my favorite; a bit too strong for me. I asked the waiter for a suggestion and he made a really good one, this yummy coffee drink called a BFK. I suggest you go there for happy hour because the food is just too pricey. But, if you like German food and beer, then this is the place for you. Also really fun for a birthday party too. They sing to you and feed you dessert....I would have paid for that alone! PS-the waitstaff were pretty darn cute also:-)
