This is the cutest tiniest little coffee enclave on Hawthorne, not quite the right place if you're looking for peace and quiet (try Hazel Room) since it's connected to busy Powell's books, but just the spot for good eavesdropping and people-watching, a cup of Stumptown, a treat, and a few chapters of your new book.

What is most impressive about the "Fresh Pot" is the level of rudeness and disreguard for customers that I experienced over the last three months of being somewhat regular here. I even sent an email to the "proprietor" named "Vin" and I received no response. They simply don't care about their customers here, I guess.

Here's a little story... On several occasions I have had to just pick up and leave while waiting in line here. The staff is chatty, if you are a close friend otherwise not so much... Last week at 7:38am I got in line behind one customer... I had a feeling that it was a problem right away. They cheerfully talked about the punch cards this person had and wich one to utilize. They also got into a discussion about the Izzy Brand drinks on display and how they caught the light giving a sort of rainbow effect. Wonderful!!! I was acknowleged by the barista (the only person working). Somehow, 8 minutes ticked away with no end in sight to the chatting. I needed to get to work on time... so I left... no problem.

Two days later I tried the "Fresh Pot" again and the same barista was there (here comes the punchline! HA HA HA HA) She asks,"Why did you leave in such a hurry?" I said, "Because I needed to get to work ontime at Emanuel Hospital... I waited here for 8 minutes!!!" I said it loudly. She argues with me, "You were not here 8 minutes!" I resonded, "Yes I was!" This bickering went on for another 30 seconds... BECAUSE THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS WRONG AT THE "FRESH MOUTH"... I MEAN "POT"... oops, easy mistake. Speaking of that, if my job allowed it (like this place apparently does) maybe I would also be this laid back, and dumb.

I would have left but my punch card was full... FREE MOCHA! I asked, "Please don't spit in my coffee." On my way out, she had the nerve to get the last jab in at me... "Have a nice day!" In a sarcastic tone. On my way out I let my finger do the talking! Have a NICE DAY right back at 'cha!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!

Awful coffee. – I went to Fresh Pot on Hawthorne Blvd this morning to grab a quick mocha before work. We were the only people in there, (at 6AM) and it took the guy 10 minutes to make two drinks. Not only was he completely unfriendly, the drinks were absolutely appalling. The guy was a total hipster ass and it was as if we were wasting his time by being there. I ordered a mocha, my boyfriend a white chocolate mocha. They tasted like milk. We didn't drink them until we were in the car, of course - which you think I would learn by now to taste IN the coffee shop.

The prices are ridiculous. 4 dollars for a medium mocha??? It was like warm milk.. If i wanted a latte, I would've ordered one.

Good – This place is pretty good all around. I love that it is in a book store.

Discriminatory, Rude, and Awful – I am a college student whose school doctor told me that I suffer from diabetes. I need to drink fluids. I was told by the adjacent Powell's Books that I could sit down and bring the drink (fat-free milk) I had brought from home in there and read a book. I needed to make an important phone call, and in the middle of it, I notice that the staff is staring at me.

The extremely rude staff then start waving their hands at me, interrupting an extremely important phone call. When I have to terminate the phone call, they yell at me for taking a few gulps of milk in their store, and say I can only stay if I buy water. Since they were so rude, I left. But after a lecture at Powell's, some of us went to the coffee shop to socialize. The party I was with ordered something, so I figured I could stay.

I still had my milk with me, but I wasn't drinking any, as per their rules. I have been recommended by my doctor to eat frequently, so I put a half a cracker and a 3/4 inch cubed piece of cheese in my mouth. The waiter comes over, in a really loud voice, yells at me so the whole restaurant can hear, saying that they already told me I cannot have food in there. They never told me anything about food, only that I couldn't be drinking milk, which I wasn't. And it wasn't like I was having a whole sandwich.

The best part of the story is that it is over 80 degrees out and humid, I have diabetes, and they yell at me because they can't make a two dollar sale off me for a tiny bottle of water. Heaven forbid that because of medical reasons, I should need to bring a large beverage in and have a bite of cheese. Coffee shops are supposed to be a place where you can socialize and feel at home, not profit-driven enterprises that only care about the bottom line on a balance sheet.

The people at the coffee shop epitomize our present profit-driven culture, where making an extra buck or two takes priority over actual people's health. I have been to many coffee shops to socialize, have brought in whole sandwiches and beverages, and everything's been fine. I have never had an establishment treat me so rudely, and I will definitely not recommend the coffee shop to any of my friends.

Sit, surf and watch the haps on Hawthorne. – In Short
While there's no shortage of coffee spots in this 'hood, Fresh Pot offers some ever-so-tempting perks. It's conveniently located inside Powell's Books, and serves locally roasted Stumptown java and delectable baked goods from Buddha Belly Bakery and Voodoo Donuts. It's a friendly place to take advantage of free wireless Internet access (but don't be a freeloader--at least get a drink while you're at it).
