Great food and aparently pansies don't eat there anymore – Michael's is such a great place to eat, I have been going there for the past 10 years(I work near) and they serve up the best sandwiches and chili dogs in Portland. Sure the owner has a bit of a short fuse but that is half the atmosphere, I am Italian and it is etcheded in our genes, my grandpa would grab your food out of your hand, throw it away and ask you if you learned how not to be a sissy. Get over it and have one of their chicago pizza style sandwiches with hot peppers and onions, it will bring a smile to your face and dry those tears out of your eyes.
Rude and Unfriendly; EXTREMELY Hostile Environment – Like some of the others have already pointed out, this is NOT the place to go if you want to dine in a friendly customer oriented environment.
The owner greets his customers with such a hostile attitude that it's almost as if he does not want anyone to disturb him by coming into his establishment.
I go to local eateries to enjoy myself NOT to sit and listen to the owner curse and rave about how the city, his suppliers and the government are all out to get him as he browbeats his poor employees in front of customers.
Even in the very back of the place you cannot escape his ranting and raving as he SHOUTS and curses at the top of his lungs. NONSTOP.
The hostile owner of that soup joint on "Seinfeld" was funny as a character on TV.
Being subjected to a cursing angry business owner is NOT so cute in real life.
Owner is nasty to customers; Questionable Cleanliness Standards – After going to Michael's for years I finally decided that the rude and out of control owner didn't deserve another dime of my money. You've never seen a business owner so ungrateful to his customers.
If they make a mistake on your order or serve you a cold sandwich due to someone forgetting to turn the heat on underneath the sauce you'd BETTER keep it to yourself; Michael will scream and curse you and do his best to insult you if you ever ask them to correct a mistake or warm up a sandwich NO MATTER how nicely you ask.
Add to all of this the fact that Michael's has been investigated due to leaving meat unrefrigerated and out in the open and not providing SOAP or paper towels in the bathroom (the SAME bathroom his employees use before they prepare your food!) and you can see why this once faithful customer finally said "Enough"!
So if you want to eat in a place where you will be treated rudely and risk your health go to Michael's.
If you think you deserve a little respect as a customer and want to dine in a healthy and sanitary environment?
Foods good, Michael's an %#@!! – I go about once a month for lunch and enjoy the food. If it wasn't so convienient from work, I would probably never eat there again because almost without fail the owner is either berating his employees or screaming to all who will listen about some injustice he feels has been done to him. This man makes a good sandwhich but could use some serious help in customer and employee relations.
PolPot was a kitten compared to the owner of this joint. – Being new to the Portland area I asked friends and acquaintances for good restaurants. I was told to come here for their delicious sandwiches -which I never did get to try- and all around great food. I was not told about the incredibly rude people who work in this hole.
Ordering my food over the phone, the worker there seemed very kind, I was ordering $75 worth of food for my coworkers and I was treated with patience and courtesy. After a long search for parking in the 1100 block of Burnside, I could not find the place. I called and who would answer but El Diablo himself.
I said "I'm on Burnside and I can't find you"
"Blah, blah, blah... I eat babies... WELL, WHERE ARE YOU" he screamed at me.
"11th and Burnside"
"WHICH 11TH AND BURNSIDE EAST OR WEST" he snorted through hairy schnozzola.
"I don't know where the east or west is. I'm over by Powe....."
"THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST AND SETS IN THE WEST... snort, LADY"
He did not want to talk any longer.
When I did figure out where they were, on entering he yelled out to the girl at the counter "THAT"S HER ORDER, I like to club seals". Then to me he said "YOUR LATE, there are snails I have to put salt on"
He cursed at me under his breath, then cursed about me to the lady ringing me up. If it hadn't of been for my coworkers who were starving because of the poor directions received from this devils minions, I would have stuck him with the bill.
Michael's Italian Beef and Sausage Company
"Fast, Hot, Sandwiches"
Their "FAST" because they don't care about you or your money.
Their "HOT" because their from infernal regions hell.
and as far as their sandwiches taste? You'll have to ask the garbage can -the only hole worth putting it in other than my toilet.
Satisfying Chicago-style sandwiches, heavy on quality and nostalgia. – In Short
The decor is bright and bold: Italian deli meets East Coast boardwalk in a distinctive, angular building trimmed with glass bricks. The dozen-plus tables fill up and turn quickly. Expect better-than-homemade pork roast sausages, meatballs, or marinated top round stuffed into Portland French bread rolls, then smothered with various combinations of tangy tomato sauce, au jus, sauteed onions, mild or hot peppers and layers of provolone.
Deliciously messy sandwiches – This place can get a bit dangerous for your heart and your wallet if you stay here for too long. When you eat your sandwich, you can smell all the ingredients calling out to you from across the way, telling you to tempt fate and get another. All their sandwiches are great, and their chili cheese fries aren't bad either. Your best bet would probably be the beef and sausage pizza style with pepperoncini. You could very easily put down $20 on this place, and it is most definitely for a glutton such as myself to eat 3 full size sandwiches, so for you normal folks a sandwich and a half should do it. Michael's has a nice family atmosphere to it, and most would definitely be comfortable watching a game here and having a couple of sandwiches, a couple beers. Good times.
rude? no... no nonsense and good? Yep! – Portlanders can be so prissy about what they term "rude" service... Some folks oughta do a stint in Philly or NY or Chicago and they will find out that some busy places don't have time to fawn over their customers. This place is and has been for so many years a standout and oasis for those of us who miss Chicago style food. Take the service with a grain of salt and tongue in cheek and enjoy the food. The Roast Beef with grilled onions and hot peppers is impossible to resist. Good chili, too.
decent – The Italian sausage sandwich was very good. I'd opt for the hot peppers, because the mild/medium don't have much taste. The chicken sandwich is a definite pass item, maybe that's why it's so inexpensive. The meatball sandwich pizza style is a poor excuse, not worth $3.60. Fries were tasty. Overall, the place is so-so, try Geraldis on 4th for better taste and value.
Pretty good food – rudest service ever... The Italian Sausage sandwich is very good, but a bit expensive. Their pizza was a better deal but is no more.
We tend to go there less and less over the years due to the absolutely obnoxious help and owner.
