Chopsticks Express

Chopsticks Express, inner East Burnside's unparalleled dive bar, is notorious for its karaoke nights and rowdy atmosphere. Grab a seat, order a whiskey drink and enjoy the show.

PDX's ONLY 5 Star Karaoke Dive – Don't know what the one guy was smoking with his negative review. Chopstix owner never treats anyone badly unless they are REALLY total losers with bad attitudes.

Some days the food is really great here, compared with all but the best asian places - other times it is simply a bit better than adequate - never lousy though! Specially not for a dive bar.Try the broccoli beef!

Drinks are usually strong enough, and they have added more beers to their list {YAY!} Chops' Karaoke is second to none!! Oh sure, there are always the drunk fools who think they sound as good as their best friends tell them - or even better when they are totally wasted {HAH!NOT EVEN!!} then it's "earplug time" - just be nice and clap anyway, cuz everyone does.

But some "regulars" can just wail...there's one gal - 'Dre {she is a cutie-, guys!} - who sings U2 songs - you go, girl! Sometimes the girls from Sleater-Kinney drop in, too...Rrriot Grrrl power!Yeh!

And then there is this tall dark-haired guy {ohhhh myyy gawwwd! he's so hot!} late 20's/early 30's - goes by "Andrew" {his real name?? don't know, cuz people at Chops use stage names a lot} and he just KILLS on anything he does!

Roy Orbason, Jackie Wilson, Aerosmith, Journey, George Michael, Elton John...some local band ought to hear him, and hire him! DUDE - you rock!

So, go there, drink a Mirror Pond or a mixed drink, eat some broccoli beef or some fries, listen to 'Dre, the Sleater-Kinney grrlz, and "Andrew" {if you're lucky} - maybe even get your own self up and sing!

fun place – I didn't eat the food and I only drank some tequila and some beer. So no reviews there. A friend had taken me out and said we were going to Chopsticks. What? She said it is where the Vespa crowd hangs out. I didn't know there was a vespa crowd and when we pulled in I didn't see any vespas. However, the crowd was a mix of hipster and prior college and other things. It was a fun crowd to say the least. The bartender was okay, the cocktail waitress that I watched handled her job well. I am not too picky when it comes to service in a bar like this at this time of night as I work bars myself and know how it gets. The KJ was okay, there was a sign posted to put in only one song request at a time. We got our song in and sang before too long. Some girls danced on the table I was sitting in (I have no idea who they were). The sound was grewat. It wasn't so smoky that I noticed at all. I didn't know it was smoking until I read the restaurant's profile.

All in all I really dug the place. Take "The Ambassador" Karaoke and multiply it by five and you get Chopsticks.

Go the extra avoid this dive. – Upon walking into Chopsticks II, I first heard what sounded like a wounded manatee attempting to sing a Madonna song. Just my luck, it was a "scareoke" night. Checked out the menu (very limited, and they don't offer every dish they've got posted), and ordered a couple of dishes, two appetizers, and a go. About this time, the manatee was replaced by it's mate, an overweight guy with a gawd-awful combover. Ironically, his voice didn't make me want to take a jackhammer to my eardrums.

Finally the food came out, I left and drove home. First the "good" review part: The egg rolls were ok, nothing to write home about, just ok. The egg drop soup wasn't half-good either. It get's worse. The pot sickers tasted like they were microwaved, and were a bit rubbery on the outside. Getting to the main course, I noticed a funny, acrid smell upon opening the box containing "general's" chicken. The fried rice had something in it that was beyond the "sell-by" date, and wasn't palettable...I took a bite, regretting it instantly, and hoped I wasn't about to get food poisoning.

So here's where it gets fun. I call Chopsticks II and inform them of the issue. At first I talk to a female (bartender?) who was attempting to be helpful. She offers a replacement plate, if I would just drive back over there and pick it up. I politely refused, and asked to speak with the owner/manager. He gets on the phone and proceeds to deny that anything was wrong with his rice. So I ask if I can come in another night for a refund. He bluntly said no. "No refunds because rice is fresh" or something to that effect. Well, we banter back and forth for a few more minutes, and I'm getting quite steamed (unlike the, again, microwaved pot stickers).

I plan on calling the health board about Chopsticks II as well as the BBB. I whole-heartedly do not recommend this pit. There are better bars in the area (Doug Fir, for one), better resteraunts (Fu Jin on Hawthorne), and better karaoke bars (pick one, they're all-over the place). Plus they've got an owner/manager who can't take polite criticism.

Good any day of the week! – Chopsticks is as fun on Monday as it is on Saturday. Some places are definately weekend spots. This place is happening every day of the week. Saturdays definately pick up though. Check it out sometime like Halloween or New Years and you'll really see a crowd!

Hooray for Chopsticks – Spaceboi, I concur...this place is a very comfy place to hang out. This is the only place I can walk into alone and still be entertained. The staff are super friendly, food is fast and cheap and served late...

The only drawback I can think of is that it is soo busy later at night and on weekends. It's hard to find a place to sit! Must be because it is so flipping cool.

Chopsticks Express II Rocks! – Extremely comfortable restaurant/lounge with a great mix of people. The full bar and good sized menu make this the perfect place to eat and drink. Though there are only between 8 and 10 vegetarian dishes, they can probably customize anything to fit your dietary needs. The food is consistently good and is served till 2 AM daily. The staff is friendly and way more competent than many local restaurants and lounges in the Portland-metro area that I've been to. There are also 2 pool tables, a MegaTouch station, and video poker for those with additional funds to burn. Karaoke is also available, starting at 8 PM seven days a week! Some of the best karaoke vocalists in Portland frequent this spot. Check it out!
