Utopia is on of my favorite cafes in Portland. The service is always friendly, the sauteed potatoes great with garlic and pepper and delicious, scrambles are wonderful, and lunches are good to. Valerie and her crew do a great job, and the prices are reasonable.
ELMER'S for a good breakfast in Portland, OR – ELMER'S is a small chain of family restaurants in Portland. The one I patronize is between SE Stark and SE Washington at the 205. You can see the sign from the freeway exit.
I've eaten all three meals there but the one I like best is the breakfast. The Mr. Elmer's omelet has a large combination of ingredients, always tastes fresh and is served with an Elmer's signature bisquit, plus hash browns or fresh fruit. I've also had the French Toast combo. It includes four thick slices, two eggs any style, and your choice of bacon or sausage.
My favorite item though is the Crab & Bacon Benedict. The Dungeoness crab is local and is a delicious treat. It is also served with either hash browns or fresh fruit.
As family restaurants go Elmer's is a notch or two better than the rest. It's clean, well maintained, with plenty of parking. If I had one complaint the service may be a little too good. I eat there all the time and while you're eating at least two and often three staffers will come by and ask "how it is." This wouldn't bother most people perhaps but I find it insincere and an overkill.
Elmer's is open from 6am til 10 pm everyday.
Terrible Service, didn't even make it to the meal – Walked in to a fairly empty restaurant with my 1 and 3 year olds. Waitress couldn't manage to set us up with highchairs. When I finally got us settled in, she proceeded to offer coffee to a table that sat down while I was trying to settle my kids. Hey, what about me? How about some help over here?
I left and went to Jam. Got TERRIFIC service and a great meal!
Scrumptous Breakfast – Utopia is an excellent breakfast and lunch cafe. They have amazing unique scrambles and brioche french toast. They are very reasonably priced and have great customer service. Warm friendly and comfortable. They have great daily specials. It fits the neighborhood perfectly. I really enjoy the rotating artwork put up by local artists. I highly recommend Utopia for anyone who wants to try a unique and different breakfast place. Waits normally on weekends but it is well worth it!!!! Try it!
Never got our food and still had to pay for it – I went to the place because I heard my sister that disappeared years ago after stiffing a lot of people money owned this place. I went in and saw my sister Val and I asked the server to tell her that her little brother was sitter here. She stated to the server that her brother was dead and had no clue to whom I was. Them made up some other crazy stuff.. I would state that this is a new scam SHE IS RUNNING AND i WOULD AVAOID THIS PLACE.. The service sucked and we never got or order.. We did pay the bill for the food we never got and the staff there seem to think that scams are normal!!!
Way to go Utopia! I have been a regular of Utopia for a long time and I must say they are the most consistant restaurant when it comes to great food and nice service. Lemon riccota raspeberry pancakes are the greatest.....Great Job!
Service with a Scowl – This used to be my FAVORITE cafe. I've been going for years! But the last few times I've been there I've been disappointed. Today was a very busy sunday, not unlike other weekends I've been there, but the service was dismal. My server never made eye contact and she walked around like an aloof ghost, hardly keeping up with the pace. No coffee refills, no "how is everything?"....
I was a server for years and worked busy sunday brunches, so I'm aware of the stress involved but I was quick and smiley and I made SURE everyone always had enough coffee!
Anyway, I'm done with Utopia. There are many other breakfast places to choose from.

Good food – I had read about Utopia for some time now, so I thought I'd drop in. Nice little restaurant, comfortable atmosphere, good music. I ordered the Brioche French Toast and a side of bacon. The French Toast was fantastic. Good coffee, too!
What happened? – We went for breakfast there last Sunday morning, after not being able to go for a while. No waiting. I was excited to get a table, and not have to wait the usual 30 minutes. Then our food arrived, and I figured out why. I ordered the bavacado scramble. The bacon pieces were dry and overcooked. I ran across something that I thought was melted cheese, but the next day, when my stomach was aggravated, I figured it may have been undercooked egg. One of my friends ordered the corned beef hash, or shall I say potato scramble, with a few dried pieces of hash. I also ordered a side of brioche french toast, the one item I was really looking forward to. The edges of the bread were so dry, and had no flavor at all. I remember the french toast being soft, and flavorful in the past, but it was not that way this last time. The service was fine, but the food was just not the same. What happened?
