You'll always get a solid breakfast, served fast and fresh, at this busy Belmont spot (go early to beat the wait). Bloody Marys & Garys are great, and definitely opt for the fruit cup with your bacon 'n eggs--it's a thing of beauty.
worst service ever – ok so seriously...i know a glass of water can be daunting...asking for it twice and then having to ask a different server for it is a little insane. This happened with every part of the service, from ordering to begging for our check so we could leave. The food is decent, but NO food is good enough to be ignored and treated so poorly.
Stay away from this place...or better yet order to go. Oh yeah and a dollar add on charge to change the cheese from mozzarella to swiss...that is just greedy or lazy.
The best must wait.. – You know that breakfast spot on Belmont where you hang out/wait, then you get the best darn bloody and eggs benny, then you wonder why so many others may have knocked this joint for service and some other obscure crud that happens at every other PDX breakfast nook? yea you know.. the good one.
If yall are too hungry, angry, or downright dumb to figure out that part of going out for breakfast in this town is getting up to get your own cup of coffee and waiting in line just like everyone else, everywhere else.
If you don't get it then Fast food is your muse and you deserve it like the rest of the sheep.
Go have some oatmeal cinnamon pancakes here.. they are big and fluffy with lots of butter and real maple syrup.. that should take your mind off the wait.
Amazing Bloody Mary – In contrast with the other reviews I have always had amazing food and amazing service. It is a little cramped in there but it is worth it. They have an amazing breakfast drink selection including a habanero Bloody Mary that brings a tear of joy to my eye every time it is delivered. The bacon and bleu cheese omelet is great, they make their eggs in a way that reminds me of home cooking.
All around quality breakfast dining.
I'd advise against it – i work a block away from this place and decided to try it one afternoon during my lunch. It wasn't even busy and I had to wait 5 minutes to even be acknowledged. finally a waitress told me to sit wherever I wanted. I waited another five minutes then got up and got my own menu. after 10 minutes she came to take my order. My order came out wrong, but I decided not to say anything because I my lunch was almost over. The food was below average and I was kicking myself for spending 9 bucks on a burger when I could have had a WAY better one off a dollar menu somewhere and it would be fast! ha. I'm not the kind of person that takes time to write reviews, but I felt it my duty to warn my fellow portlanders. The food is gross and the service is awful. Save your money and time. It always looks pretty busy on sunday mornings. Maybe there breakfast is a different story. I'll never know, but I highly doubt it.
Mediocre – The food is good, but not great. The service on the other hand is pretty weak. They are nice enough, but not willing to do too much to improve your dining experience. I brought my parents one time, telling them that this was one of the best breakfast places around. We waited outside (this was winter) and helped ourselves to free coffee. After 15 to 20 minutes, a couple of guys bypassed us and got seated immediately. We told the server that we were next and he said that the guys who walked in were his family members. We were pretty irritated. He didn't really care.
How does this place stay busy?? – I've tried to give the Cricket a good chance, but they have failed consistently in every way possible. I once went in the door to see that it was suprisingly empty. After standing in the doorway for a couple of minutes without any response from the wait staff we decided to sit down. That is exactly when the staff decided to notice we were there, because they told us we had to sign up on the list and wait for a table. This was a bit confusing, as there were at least 6 empty tables around us. Well, we chocked this time up to us learning the way the staff likes to run the restaurant. The second time we went, we signed up on the list right away and were seated after a wait. One of the main problems with this place is the seating. They try to pack WAY too many tables into that tiny little space. I was actually bumping elbows with the neighboring table! Also, if anyone wanted to leave their table, they had to interrupt your meal, so they could squeeze by. The service is never that great... I had to beg them to give me more coffee, and they seem irritated that you are eating at their restaurant. I vowed to never go back. My girlfriend decided to take my brother and his wife there a while later. They joked about how I told them I would never go back. Well they learned the lesson the hard way. They put their name on the list, and waited for about 30 minutes, and saw a group walk up that was obviously either the "cool kids" or one of the waiters friends, because they immediately got a table. My brother asked the waitress why they got to jump into the front of the line and thats when she Kicked My Brother Out of the Restaurant! She said she didn't like his attitude and he should immediately leave. What the hell is wrong with the staff here??? Like another of the reviewers said. Aren't they working for tips? If I were the owner I'd fire every single one of you scenesters.
Lovely neighborhood spot, dependable quality of food and service – I read the previous reviews, but I have had nothing but wholly positive experiences at Cricket in the half dozen or so times I have eaten there over the last year. The eggs florentine has the most delicious hollandaise sauce in Portland. I appreciate that most things on the menu have a vegan or vegetarian alternative. I have never had any problems with the cleanliness or service. It's a place I always take visitors and my parents when they are in town.
Save your money – I have tried on several occasions to support this local spot, and every time, without fail, I get the rudest service. The waitstaff acts like they don't work for tips and hopefully they don't. I RARELY get my order back correctly, or in a timely manner. THIS PLACE IS NOT WORTH THE WAIT!!! REGARDLESS OF HOW HUNGOVER YOU ARE, YOUR BETTER OFF SPENDING THE 40 MIN OF WAIT TIME COOKING YOURSELF!!!!!
Ugh, they need to clean! – I went to Cricket for the first time this morning. I wish I'd had a better experience because I'd heard good things. A small group (4) of us went to Cricket for breakfast. We got there early and so were seated quickly. There were about eight flies hovering around the main walkway through the restaurant and over our table. We had to shoo them away periodically. The waitresses made no attempt to get rid of them or apologize for them. When the food came out it was good - my buttermilk pancake looked overdone but was actually perfectly crispy on one side and was very pleasant. My eggs were done the way I like them. Other people expressed that they liked the food. Our waitress sloshed a not-small amount of water onto the table when refilling my friend's glass and didn't apologize or make any effort to clean up, just walked away. Other waitresses were friendly and helpful. The main problem with our visit was the cleanliness of the place. The floors were FILTHY - you could see dirty bootprints, coffee stains, food swept to the corners, grease, oil, sugar.... I actually skidded on my way walking to the bathroom because there was so much debris and grit on the floor. Pretty unappealing. I don't mind a normal amount of traffic dirt that you would see in a normal restaurant, and I don't expect it to be sterile and gleaming, but this was far and above beyond a normal level of dirt. If it was that nasty in their common spaces, it made me cringe to think of what the kitchen was like. I would go back to Cricket again if I heard that they made an effort to keep their restaurant clean (see another post in which a hair was found on top of an omelet), but otherwise I'll head elsewhere. An otherwise fine experience ruined by pretty low cleanliness standards that make you start looking suspiciously at your pancakes.....
Good food, ok service, long wait – My husband and I went to the Cricket on Sunday afternoon (2:00pm) to have a little brunch / linner and thought we'd get a table pretty fast (the host said it would be 10-15 minutes). Our name was finally called 45 minutes later which was longer than we had wanted (tummies growling) but hey, it's a Sunday. I order the Veggie Skillet vegan style (tofu sub, no cheese or sour cream, added veggie sausage) and it was very good! I was quite surprised. There was a little more oil than I would have wanted, swimming at the bottom of the bowl but the skillet was perfectly seasoned and the veggie sausage was yummy. My husband had the Cricket omlette with soy bacon and veggie gravy and he liked it (it's big so prepare to take some home, small eaters). I tried the veggie gravy off his plate and loved it, yummy! So overall, I give the food high marks, the wait a stinky thumbs down, and the service a "meh".
